The rules for dropping more than two grades should be wiped clean for the start of a season, they should only be in place to stop people for dropping back after xmas to get sides into finals. when sides are struggling for numbers at beginning of season because of sunday cricket etc then common sense should prevail and the rule shouldn't apply.

As for stopping a young bloke from our competition from going to premier cricket for a match to help improve his game and a side has shown some interest in trying him out, then it is a completely disgraceful. All other associations allow it except for the bca. it is not a cricket victoria rule, it is only a BCA rule.

Where does all the fine money go to??? I've played country week the past two seasons and have gotten ************ all for it. all players take a week off work and are given only $25 a day which is ************ all when u have to travel up and back each day and buy your breakfast and tea..leaving at like 6am and getting home after 10pm is stupidity. all other associations stay down in melbourne and get alot more gear(uniforms) then what ballarat players do. All we got was a playing top.

The BCA is almost becoming a joke of an association and would be fairly close to the worst ran association in the state I would presume.

You have choices..

Apply to have the rules you don't like changed it's that simple. If enough clubs do the same then things will change - don't just whinge do something about it! Contact all other clubs get some consensus and make it happen.

or do nothing and keep whingeing about how bad things are.

or walk away from the game and keep whingeing about how bad things are.

It's up to you.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association 09/10

Steve, good to hear from you!

Don went from being the premier umpire (even with his stupid nod before a LBW!) But it seems the power of authority has gone to his head. Were not asking for rule changes just abit of common sense. Announcing games on a wednesday and having to have submissions in by wednesday evening is not common sense. Especially when they change games from a saturday to sunday. Alot of players were not aware until thursday night training that they were playing sunday.

Question for you steve..
Let's say you still played for point, and over the winter you recruited 2 players to your club when the season gets closer and after putting in there clearances the 2 players say sorry steve but a few things have changed over the week and we cannot commit to playing cricket at a higher level. A few days later Golden Point recieve a $200 fine? Fair steve?

No probably not fair in that instance but it is in the rules and it's not a fine it is a lodgement fee - pedantic I know but... it was put there to stop players lodging clearances they never intended to go through with. It would be better if the player had to come up with the cash out of his own pocket.

Any how this is what I would have said to him to handle the situation - DO NOT withdraw clearance, contact your club and tell them to knock back the clearance. End result is that he is still happy to stay where he is and you don't lose the lodgment fee...

The fines are in place for a reason, it sh#ts club to tears when fined but think about this for a minute;

We have got five new umpires this season, and three blokes doing their first A grade games. Umpire reports are very important to see how these guys are going. Pretty simple to fill out and doesn't take long but still there are 10 reports not back from this round, most of them include new umpires. So how do we know how the new blokes have gone?

There have also been teams that have won that have not bothered to lodge match reports and team sheets. So how are you supposed to get these guys to do it? There are at least 22 things that need to be chased up for this round alone.

You want professionalism from the BCA - fair enough. Don't forget it's a two way street. How professional is it if clubs can't do basic things like match reports, team sheets and umpire reports after a game?

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association 09/10

True, it is a 2 way st.

Your comment about umpire reports, do you expect honest reports back? You unfortunately won't get honest feedback from captains as they get fined if they are too honest like it happened with knowlesy last year!

Your clearance issue is spot on, would solve the problem with a simple phone call.

I think honesty is important, but the comments have to be constructive and based on reason/fact not just emotion.

No point saying he is a **** of an umpire...

You need to give examples of inadequacies. Some reports are just crap, while others are good. I have sent you a PM to let you know what I mean...

Not sure of the Knowlesy story, you can fill me in when I see you next.

Fair call with Naps & Point, Early games lost make it very hard to get into 4 especially when i can't see Geelong West & Target Heads losing many games.

Ballarat/Redan v Mt. Clear - Close.
Darley v Wendouree - Jonno to rip thru and get 8.
Golden Point v Napoleons/Sebastopol - Bowlers too strong.
East Ballarat v North Ballarat - Hoppy to get another Ton.
Coronet City v Brown Hill - Honda to get his 1st of many century's!

Good to be back on the turf.

Correct Steveo, he's a ripper. Grammar ground was very slow, on any other ground and it would have been a big double ton for Honda.

I think the question on everyone's lips is: When will Ash Barker get his chance?

Soon, he's told us he's been at Forest St P.S nets 3-4 times a week working on his new mystery ball.... Plus he refuses to play anywhere but the ones so maybe after christmas we might see him!

It's all very well SteveB to say simply apply to have the rules changed!

Let me bring to your attention some issues ....

1. Some suggested rule changes seem to get "swept under the carpet" with this absurd strategy that the executive/administration have of "blanket voting" groups of rule changes with the obvious intention of conserving some rules that the administration dont want changed, rather than seriously considering input from clubs.

2. If you think the BCA is a highly credible and well run cricket association you you need to get out and about a bit. Major competitions in Melbourne and also other country associations are bemused to hear about (and experience) the rules, management and umpire/tribunal dictatorship that exists within the BCA.

3. The BCA has continued to show a lack of progress in a number of areas. (Lack of bonus points sees stumps drawn on many matches during the course of day 2.)

4. The fact that both competing clubs do not share afternoon tea, and rarely socialise after the game is immature and lacking in community spirit.

Here are some of my thoughts...

A submission from 10 or 15 clubs will hold more weight than a submission from one club, so if you are keen on making changes do it.

2. If you think the BCA is a highly credible and well run cricket association you you need to get out and about a bit. Major competitions in Melbourne and also other country associations are bemused to hear about (and experience) the rules, management and umpire/tribunal dictatorship that exists within the BCA.Again I will say it goes both ways, when the clubs can do simple things like lodge team sheets, scores, umpire reports then maybe they can criticise the BCA's credibility.

3. The BCA has continued to show a lack of progress in a number of areas. (Lack of bonus points sees stumps drawn on many matches during the course of day 2.)Bonus points might seem like a good idea to you but I doubt you would get wide ranging support from other clubs. Most players don't want to play on once the game is won... what other areas are you referring to please explain

4. The fact that both competing clubs do not share afternoon tea, and rarely socialise after the game is immature and lacking in community spirit. How is this an administration issue???? Do something about it then, this has nothing to do with the BCA. It's a club issue take it up with other clubs.

I don't know what other clubs do when they play Darley, but for as long as they've been in the competition, whenever we play them (in the 1s anyway), the home side has always put on a banquet-style spread and both teams have hung around for a beer and a chat before heading back up/down the highway. I presume they do it with all sides ?

The boys always like the trip to Darley; the ladies committee does a bang-up job and then there's the stubbie sprint on the way home !

As for socialising after the game, I think a lot depends if you are playing at the home club's headquarters ie. their bar is there. Most teams came downstairs for a beer at North; Alfredton, Eastern Oval, Mount Clear, Napoleons and Brown Hill readily spring to mind as places where we would normally stick around for at least 1.

Yes, Darley teams are great at coming back for a beer, no matter what has taken place on the field. Its good sharing afternoon tea and a chat with them, they are generally a good bunch of blokes.

Not that we condone binge drinking but, word is Jon Barnett got to the 9 last night, fair effort by the lad - however he did spew on the bus - whats the ruling on having a chuck ? me thinks he is ineligible

Been some interesting discussion the past couple pages, agree on the above comments re mixing for the arvo tea - for the past 2 weeks B/Redan and Mt Clear had a joint arvo tea which worked well, should be more of it !!

As Steve B says, get together as a group and change it, if all the clubs think their needs to be change then it should happen.

By the looks of the scores yesterday, there was some pretty boring cricket - (one game had 100 overs for 187, another 89 overs for 180) - whilst talking of changing rules, we need to look at more 1 dayers, or even just 1 dayers, especially with all our rep games being 1 dayers -

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association 09/10

Can anyone confirm this one for me?

I heard yesterday that the MCCC boys were out on the Uni Oval raking up grass from the tractor on Wednesday, it got cut again Thursday and they raked it up again on Friday!

Please please please say it's true, Nicho. That would definitely become my favourite wacky Paull story of all time!

Not sure if it would be kosher, but it might be time for all clubs to invest in industrial strength leaf blowers if it is now best practice!

Confirmed SteveO. I asked the boys last night and they said that there was no doubt many of the clumps of clippings had been removed during the week. Personally a little disappointed about that. The boys wouldn't say it cost us the game but conditions we're definitely better second week.

Call me a sook......again, but what happened to sportsmanship? Does winning a match mean that much that you will take the time to rake up grass clippings to give your team an advantage all the while ruining a reputation and losing respect from guys like myself (who is a nobody, granted)?

It was probably only 1 maybe 2 blokes doing it but it reflects pretty poorly on the team and the club as a whole. This is another issue I have with 2day cricket. It's not common practice but it's been known to happen from time to time, some clubs tend to (to steer away from the word 'doctor') ensure conditions suit their own team second week. Bring on 18 1 day games, 50 overs a piece, play each team twice home and away, proper second chance finals, maybe even a best of 3 Grand Final.

Cant believe i am agreeing with you waka but this would seem a pretty good idea having 50 over games. Keeps everyone doing something in the days play and you get a home and away system that isnt flawed by only playing a few sides twice.

Would just have to clarify what we could wear as a one day uniform.... They are very tough on this. Just ask DCC.

Also to another strange ruling which involved me personally. Essendon wanted me to play in their 20/twenty premier league format (5 games played midweek or on a sunday) and the league basically told them that if i play i am suspended from Darley for each game that i play. I know they made it real hard for knowlesy to have a crack as well when he had a taste of premier cricket.

Players want to play cricket and whilst i wont be playing at in town again it would be great for young players to be able to gain experience when it doesnt interfere with BCA cricket without being sanctioned.

Looking forward to the flies at Naps this week.
