Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

THIS IS FROM THE GEELONG THREAD ON THE U/21 GAME.

The central highlands boys smashed them.

We won the toss and decided to bat.

Friday's rain made the Thomson outfield slow but it was looking picture-esque.

With a strong team and everyone arriving on time ready to play things were looking good for the BC Barwon Rockets.

Things weren't so rosey at 2-3, Hodgson (0) and Kilfoyle (2) been and gone. Herbison and Troy batted for 10 overs and steadied the innings before a short one got too big on Herbison (10) and bottomed edged it onto his stumps. O'Neill and Troy put on 30 before Troy ballooned one to mid wicket where a great catch was taken by the Central Highland fielder. East Belmont Freak of Nature Becker Nguyen came into the crease and dismantled the legspinner down Godfrey St a couple of times. Becker (40) was run-out by a direct hit from backward point with the score on 5-135 with 10 overs to go.
The left handed Jimmy Fitzerald was keen to take on the short midwicket boundary, but somehow the ball was getting held up in the slow outfield. O'Neill (49) departed toeing a sweep to deep midwicket. Fitzgerald and Armisted chanced their arms in the last 5, both making (15) before both losing their wickets. Prime holed out to long off in the 48th over for a golden duck. 2 balls into the last over Strods (0*) decided it would be a good idea to run a single to the keeper standing up the stumps, thus burning Sammy Farnsworth. BC Barwon Rockets were all out for 183.

In the tea break Mitch Troy told me that the Central Highlands opener Sam Miller posted 100 off 20 overs in the Senior Country Week Final against Geelong. Was really starting to look forward to fielding.

Opener Bowlers started off well with Sammy Farnsworth (0-35) bowling at good speed and getting the ball to move around quite alot but him and Sean Bogan (0-30) couldn't get the breakthrough. With Mitch Herbison (0-16) departing at 4:30 for his club 20/20 match he came on first change and again got the ball to move through air but with no luck as the two Highland openers were becoming impossible to remove. Both openers passed 50 whilst Mitch Troy (0-41) and Xavier Prime (0-40) were bowling. Good ground fielding was keeping pressure on both the batsmen with several run-out oppurtunities going very close. Anthony Armisted (3-21) was introduced with immediate success and the momentum of the match started to swing. Assisted with some luck for the Rockets with run-out attempts finallt hitting the stumps, Highlands needed 13 runs with 4 overs remaing. Some tight bowling and excellent ground fielding kept us in the match but with only 4 runs needed off the last over with 5 wickets in hand it we were always going to be up against it. A nick down to 3rd man and the match was over. Highlands beating the Rockets by 5 wickets with 4 balls to spare.

Armisted was the pick of the bowlers bowling his 10 straight and nearly stealing us the win. Most pleasing aspect was even though all day in the field we were up against it we stuck at it and never gave up.

Very dissapointing to lose but there opening batsmen (Millar & Locky Herring DCC) were just too good, if we had of got them earlier it might have changed the result of the match.

Kudos to Sean Bogen for arriving at the Barwon Club with his cricket shirt on and Zinc'd up.

Also thank you to the Thomson Cricket Club for staging the match and everyone involved with the U21's this season.

word coming out of the north camp is that they have recruited an opening bowler from mildura. they are saying that he is very slippery. will be interesting to get some feedback from the point blokes this week on this site as to his ability.

I'm by no means talking up east, but darley played them minus yates and irving, they played wendouree minus johnno, arguably some of the better players of both sides..a wins a win, but I'm still not convinced that darley is the powerhorse that darley think they are...

Naps may also be a powerhorse, as you say. Thommo and Ash Ringin are miles off full fitness and will cause all sorts of trouble when they are right.

Interesting that the top 6 sides on the ladder after 3 rounds are the same sides that made up the top 6 last year.

I think the competition will only get tighter and as the grounds quicken up and dry out we might find the quicks struggle to contain sides a bit more and the captains turn to the spinners and slow bowlers and set defensive fields earlier, a la Mt Clear.

It's going to be a long, hot summer!

Darley played wendouree without Brendan Parker, Matt Cape & opening bowler Brett Walker from Hoppers Crossing so a great win. Anthony Cape & Peter Moore stood up in the pace attack Steeny had the match winning score - the only player to make over 50 so a very good win.

We don't think we are a powerhouse but with steeny's processes in place we are out to earn some respect and make teams worried about playing us which hasnt happened in the past. To beat both East & Wendouree for the first time in 5 years is why there is genuine excitement from down the road.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Having played last year's grand finalists in Naps-Sebas and Mt Clear and last year's minor premier East Ballarat in the first 3 rounds, I would have to say that Naps is probably the most balanced team that we have played so far, and that was minus Ringin and Thommo was carrying a calf. Mt Clear rely on their batsmen to make a boatload and then put 9 on the fence in the field and East rely too much on Yater to bat, bowl and 'rough up' the opposition in general. I'm looking forward to getting a closer look at Darley and Wendouree after christmas.

Would have to agree with you Razza on the Mt. Clear description. They will need to rely heavily on their batsmen making 400+ each week as their bowling has significantly declined from last year as we all know. In 56 overs against us week one they used 9 bowlers and none really gave us genuine concern. If it weren't for the rain they should have been staring down the barrel of a 300 chase. They should struggle against more rounded opposition as easily accounting for Brown Hill, limping home against North and not convincing too many against us can't give them overwhelming confidence going into a big match against the Red Caps this week.

For what it's worth my tips for this round -
Mt. Clear v Wendouree
Darley v Napoleons/Sebastopol
North Ballarat v Golden Point
Coronet City v East Ballarat
Brown Hill v Ballarat/Redan

Interesting observations, Greg.

I reckon it's interesting that Wendouree, Darley and Naps are the only sides with genuine quicks yet the last few flags have been won by Mt Clear (an exception with Linc Blake), Redan (Bambury bowling alot of overs) and East (classy medium pacers in Jezza, Tom and George).

Many blokes will say you MUST have genuine quicks and strike bowlers to do any good, but good fields and containment can produce just as many wickets. Probably more, as quicks still have to put the ball in the right spots.

your right sven, just having the quicks guarantees you nothing. they still have to bowl the right lines or they can be more expensive. but as a skipper, it still bloody nice to have them, & im blessed to have thommo & ash with cordo coming along nicely after stress fractures in his back 18 months ago. & at naps we are excited by the continued development of matt ringin & tyler ditloff. but amongst that, branchy is just as important for the variety.

now, to finish our attack off nicely, i need appleton. whats he gunna cost me???

I'll take Thommo, Ash and Banwell for Harry Potter. And I'll throw in a slab of Crownies.

droughts not making it easier for the quicks. containment and tight bowling caused by low slow wickets perhaps? where its hard to score freely and hard for bowlers to take wickets?

long way to go so not really into doing long range forecasts but in stating the obvious, early season wins are very handy whilst clubs are still finding their feet so full credit to darley there.

but Naps boys seem to be travelling OK and still have les sandwith in the wings who will be a pretty handy in for Naps at some stage you would think

Mounties ready for hurt Wendouree
BY DAVID BREHAUT

THERE is nothing worse than a wounded Wendouree in the Ballarat Cricket Association firsts competition.
Mt Clear knows it and is well prepared to take on a Wendouree on the rebound at Wendouree tomorrow.

Each has great respect for the other, so it comes as no surprise that the only movement at the selection table last night resulted in bowling attacks being strengthened.

Match-winning fast bowler Eamon Johnson is back for Wendouree after being unavailable for round three, while Mt Clear is giving first-season paceman Simon Feros another opportunity.

The former Western Waves under-16 and under-21 representative takes the place of another Mounties recruit Rhett Ovens.

Feros claimed four wickets in the opening round and Mt Clear will be hoping he can do the same against the batting depth of Wendouree.

Johnson is always a chance to swing a game Wendouree's way, with ball or bat.

Mt Clear and Wendouree could easily have collected three first-innings victories.

The Mounties had the better of Ballarat-Redan in round three and had to settle for a draw.

Wendouree will be still cursing its one-run loss to Darley.

The Red Caps were fortunate to get so close, but the fact that they did means it was a lost opportunity.

In each case there is a determination to make amends.

In particular, Wendouree does not want to let another match slip by otherwise it could find itself back in the pack. Its top order has plenty to prove.

Heath Pyke, Sam Miller, Craig Jenkins and Matt Skinner all missed out on runs and will not want a repeat.

It was not a case of failing with the bat for Mt Clear.

Darren Fletcher, Rian McKee and Paull Jeffrey did manage to get some time at the crease before rain had the final say and in the previous match the runs came thick and fast from Matt Goonan, Tim

McLeod and Fletcher again.
