you would think your council would put in funds for your turf wicket as your the only ground to have a turf wicket in the council correct?

correct we are the only turf pitch in the shire. no funding though but as i said i dont know the whole facts and maybe we got some assistance to start off with but i doubt it.

Clarky,

Further on this (not on committee or anything) but Darley CC took the gamble from leaving a Div 3 country league to the ballarat league (to become a better & more respected club) and we had to pay for the development and maintaining of a turf wicket so we could enter into the league. The council doesnt subsidise any of these costs.Just seems some clubs get it easier than others. And make sure your club shouts afternoon tea this year. Time old tradition that some tight arse clubs in ballarat cant do.

I think the Darley lads are on the right track and have some good people behind the scenes there. You blokes have a reasonably good outfield with some couch covering so you have to ensure you get as much funding from the council and Govt grants as possible for water. Even with a grant our sprinklers at Naps have cost us plenty...and then some ....and add a bit more. Puts the pressure on which means afternoon teas are scarce !! Couch takes a long time to take and lack of water has hurt but hopefully thats all past with our sprinkler system. Should be one of the better surfaces about.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Such a pity that there's not much cricket news to talk about and so many people have to resort to talking shit to stimulate discussion :(

... And then well-meaning people get drawn into it to propogate it. Ignore the troll(s) !

*********************************************
On to cricket news:

I would be interested to hear feedback/comments on the following...

We are cautiously awaiting the outcome of the Roosters' applications for funding to do works on the Northern Oval. If I read the paper right (and presuming The Courier got something right for a change ...) it seems that they are looking to commence redevelopments (including top-dress and new drainage) at the conclusion of the football season (read: ground out for entire cricket season).

It has been a big fight over the last few years to retain cricket on the Northern Oval. The Roosters want to dig up the turf and relocate us, with their suggestion being a redeveloped North No 2. Now it doesn't take a rocket-scientist to figure out that North No 2 is a shithole compared to the top oval, and the Cricket Club is adamant that we are not going anywhere without comparable facilities/ground. We are also adamant that we should not have to fund redevelopments to move us off what is rightfully half ours. We are lucky that the Sports Club is being fair and resonable and not letting the Roosters dictate.

Unfortunately North No 2 is very limited in what can be done to make the ground wider (presuming a 3 or 5 pitch strip is put in the middle) due to the retaining dam on one side and the fence to Wendouree on the other. However there has been a whisper that we may demolish the existing clubrooms and build a 2 storey joint similar to the Grammar pavilion on the grassy patch in the South West corner. This would allow us to widen the ground by about 10 metres.

Any thoughts/comments ?

So even though every other ground in the state doubles as a cricket pitch, including MCG and Telstra Dome (yes i know they're drop ins, but thats only new) the Roosters want to be high and mighty and flex their muscle a bit and kick the cricketers out? Typical footy attitude...

It would be a very big task to undertake if you were to do something similar to what you're talking about. If the footy club wanted it to happen then I'd certainly be pushing for them to front the bill for it...

Would be a huge loss to cricket. It also doubles as a finals venue so the loss of that would hurt the BCA.

NBCC would have promoted their facilities as their main draw card for recruiting. If they have to play on the back oval then its gotta hurt them big time in terms of getting new players.

Also where do the lower grades play. Wendouree West surely not.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

i also heard that the nbfc wanted to rip up the turf pitch at the number 1 oval and move it down to the number 2. but they want to take over the whole land down there and rip up the rooms at north & wendouree 2 and make a massive grass area including turf & hard wickets and also allow to play soccer on there to. massive loss if it happens over summer cos 3 grounds will be out of action.

If i was on the board at North I would say ******** the footy club. The footy club use the ground 6 months of the year so what is going to happen there for the other 6 months. Are they just going to water it and leave it for what ??? I think some of these footy clubs have been in mass hysteria mode a while just becuase of the turf wicket - and they have a huge mobile cover they can put over the wicket table anyway that drains the water off the arena. They have turf wickets on all the major AFL grounds so perhaps North footy executives have been living under a rock or are just elistists looking to further make themselves the untouchables of country sport. |@|@

i think they got sick and tired of looking for ground to train on and play practice matches on so they wanna use it for pre season and stuff. also down the near future they want afl practice games to be played there to. it will happen which will be shyt.

dont be surprised if they boot off the cricketers and contract the summer rights over to athletics. I suppose if they build a firs class (double storey) clubrooms at North two and actually spend some money on something other then paying footy players then it might be allright. Problem is they (the footy club) might have too many business people on the board and not enough sports people.

That wouldn't be a surprise if they did decide to go that way. Then they would have the oval for all those special events like Ballarat Show etc...They'd want to spend an absolute bucketload to compensate the cricket club and if they were to do up number 2 then they'd want to produce a top class ground to match what they are taking away from Ballarat Cricket...

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

As for the whole North number 2 oval.... It is a shocking oval to play on and they would have to spend an absolute ton of cash on the ground just to get it up to firsts standard... Thats before they even think about putting in a turf wicket or building club rooms...

Good points. We are most fortunate with the facilities we enjoy. At one stage we had our eye on Wendouree Sec College as our no 2 ground (we had club personnel on the school committee) however that idea seems to have been shelved. I think Wendouree West as as no 2 ground and a Vic Park as no 3 ground are the most likely outcomes.

Thats exactly our angle ... we already suffer enough from the Show, Dog trials and the Gift every year. We continually request that the dog trials and the Gift be held on consecutive weekends and then the draw worked out such that we only lose one round of cricket instead of two, however the Gift organisers (Athletics Ballarat?) have stuffed us up the last two years. One year if i recall correctly, we play 3 A grade games at our home ground for the year, and didn't get on until after christmas (Round 8 or so) !

Also if anyone has played on no 2 within a couple of weeks after the show they will know that it can be a battle to avoid the hay and shit left on the ground as no 2 is normally a grazing area.

And just to debunk anyone who wishes to bring up the old chestnut about the cricket club being laced with pokie funds, I can assure you that the cricket club only profits from the Sports Club's operations by way of facilities improvements. Its not like we get cash payments or anything.

Apparently in the constitutions of both the cricket and football clubs is an exclusivity right to the ground, such that between october and march, the cricket club can demand exclusive access to the ground, and the footy club can do same between april and september. I'm led to believe that this extends to things like the show, dog trials and the gift also; meaning we have the power if we so choose to deny them use of the ground.

We have had a number of farcical situations in the past couple of years where the football club has booked the ground on a thursday night in November, and because they got their booking in first, the cricket club can't go use the ground to do fielding. One way around this is to just book the ground every tuesday and thursday regardless of if we want to do fielding or not, but of course then they jump up and down that we have the ground booked but are not using it !

We certainly have no issues with finding alternative venues to do our pre-season training provided that it is a two-way street.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

What you said about it being written in to the clubs constitution about have rights to the ground I imagine would be exactly right. I actually believe and have read government policy on the issue, but cricket and football are, by Australian Law, not allowed to operate more than the assigned 6 months of the year. That is a real law. The footy club should have no more use of the ground than the law dictates.

If the footy club goes and books the ground ahead of time, then why not return the favour?! or book it of a thursday night for like the next 5 years or something?

As for AFL regulations, thats a massive load...how many exclusively AFL grounds are their in this state? I reckon i've prob played cricket on most of the VFL homegrounds, what makes Northern Oval so exclusive?!

oh sorry....Austar Arena

oh sorry....Austar Arena

Somebody you might know of by the name of Jarrod Burns is also a footy umpire and is umpiring a curtain raiser down at the MCG on Saturday.
Dreamtime for Burns with MCG duties

AS DUSK envelops the hallowed turf of the MCG on Saturday evening, Ballarat umpire Jarrod Burns will be living a dream.
The 18-year-old field umpire has been summoned to Dreamtime at the G for match duties in the AFL indigenous curtain raiser to its Essendon-Richmond clash.

It will be a welcome change of pace for Burns, who last week officiated East Point and Sebastopol for the Ballarat Football League in the pouring rain at Eastern Oval - his mum was still trying to get the mud out of his socks yesterday.

"All week I've been nervous," Burns said.

"Everyone's saying after half-time the Essendon and Richmond fans will start to fill the stands.

"When I got the letter to say I was umpiring at the 'G, it was such a surprise.

"It's going to be a massive game, especially with the whole 150 years of AFL games."

Dreamtime at the G celebrates the contribution indigenous Australians have made to Aussie Rules.

Burns, a member of the AFL Victoria umpire pathway program, has been chosen to umpire indigenous clubs Fitzroy Stars and Santa Teresa in a twilight battle.

He is certain AFL umpire selectors will be keeping a keen eye on the match and is determined to impress.

Burns has relished working with AFL umpire Kieran Nicholls under the pathways program this season and urged other young footy fans to give umpiring a go.

"It's getting easier to reach the elite level and once you make that first step there is heaps of help along the way," Burns said.

Burns took up umpiring to stay fit in the cricket off-season and, with hard work and dedication, has officiated Victorian Country Football League state junior championship matches, including an under-19 Vic Country-Vic Metro clash.

The chance to umpire under lights at the MCG, in front of a growing crowd, was something else, he said.

It was the start of a dream.
