Bowling fitness

Re: Bowling fitness

I got a chin up bar (and 24, season 6 DVD) for Christmas. I'll be using the former to aid with my core strength :)

EDIT: I have installed it and had a go on it and it is bloody hard. I can hang for about 3s, but that is about it. Mine is quite low, because I have quite a low doorframe. I'd say the bar is about 6ft in the air. Is it bad to have it at such a low height?

I am not sure I understand what 'bracing' is. Is it an exercise or just a way to stand which activates the core muscles, allowing better use of them?

Re: Bowling fitness

A 6' high bar is fine; you can raise your knees towards your chest then pull yourself up.

Brace your core [as in the first paragraph] and hold it as you exercise.

Could you please give a basic description (or paint illustration) of what position your body was in when you slipped which began the pain.

Re: Bowling fitness

my front foot slipt causing me to roll onto the left side of my lower back causing a nasty crunch sound and a stabbing pain can be hard to get up or bend over sometimes

If it is what I had, then I recommend at least two weeks of complete rest from bowling.

Re: Bowling fitness

yes i guess that would help but im in top form of bowling at the moment if i rest i may lose this form maybe i should see a physiotheripast??

Make an appointment asap, but I assure you not to bowl until you have seen one.

As manee said, get some proper advice, 2 or 3 weeks rest from cricket is preferable to missing a year or 2 or even a lifetime of back pain.

Re: Bowling fitness

I have another question regarding chin ups. Is it beneficial to jump whilst holding a chin up bar and hang yourself, high in that position for 1 or 2s?

Do you mean with your chin above the bar or hanging below the bar with your arms straight above you?

Either...I've just been messing around with both.

Re: Bowling fitness

OK, not sure why I asked really. The answer to both is... No :D

If you pull yourself up and hold the biceps in an isometric contraction, it will strengthen the muscles at that angle but no other. There are benefits to this, if you're Charles Atlas but not for you. Certainly not for cricketers; not really functional.

I shall leave David to tell you about movement ;)

Ok. Fair enough. For exercises, I will be doing between now and the season I have these:

Regular chin ups
Planks
Press ups
Sqauts
The leg flexibility stretch you suggested

I am probably going to do one exercise, several times in one week and then move to the other. The exception is the last one which I will be doing throughout.

I have a clip of my bowling which I am trying to post in my Several Fast Bowling Questions thread, but I am struggling to get it up :)laugh:) on youtube. Could I request someone to provide for me a free way to host videos so they can be downloaded? It is a side on view so I think it will be helpful.
