Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

I went today. The muscles were still as sore today but when I was going for a run with the team nothing hurt. They hurt when I was just walking but I couldn't really feel it during my bowling.

Dad's gonna give me some more massages soon.

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Muscle soreness is gone now.

But my back is still bad - I don't think I've sorted the twist yet. I'll try to get a video soon.

One thing I do notice is that my action isn't all that smooth and I don't get enough pace in my run up. Any tips? I know you can go to an oval and just run and bowl and that's how you get your run up but it seems I get the same pace if I go off like 5 steps as off 15 steps.

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Back has been holding up fine this season, no complaints at all.

Today at training my coach for 16s who's a bowler as well noticed that I had a really small second last step. And now that he pointed it out, it does feel that way. I know it's gonna be really hard to get it longer because it's just natural for me, but are there any tips on how to do it easier?

Thanks.

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

And also all through my run up it is really jerky and I kinda stop halfway and then start again.

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

This is really interesting Jonesy. Try to post a video of your run up, front on and side on so we can have a chance of seeing where the fault lies.

In the meantime, the number of steps in your run up is unimportant... rhythm is the key for pace.

Out of curiosity, do you have athletics at school and if so, do you do the long, skip and jump?

Yeah sure thing. Will do as soon as I can.

Nah we only have a carnival once a year and I don't go because I wouldn't win anything and basically its just a day off school. Why's that?

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

It would have been a good analogy.

Imagine running up to a long jump pit, you run and then you jump... long continuous strides. Then imagine running up to the pit and without hesitation you take a long hop, skip and the longest jump possible. You know the aim is to get a far as possible so ALL your strides will be as wide as possible; no hesitation, no little stride.

Never mind! Send the video when you have one ;) :D

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Your upper body is more relaxed than before; must be the longer hair :D

You lean a little too much to the left; try to keep more upright Jonesy. As you follow through, your non bowling arm should go straight back. At the moment it is crossing the back [from left to right across the midline], rotating your torso. Other than that, I love the arms.

Your little skip is very noticeable in the second video and yes, you're right, it will take some time to correct. Your run through is a bit stilted too; you need to get more rhythm here.

Best thing to do is forget the run up for now. Walk it through to start with; just take two [equal] steps and bowl. Do this over and over again.

When you feel this is comfortable, take five [equal] steps and bowl. Do this over and over again.

When this is comfortable, run five [equal] steps bowl. Do this over and over again. If you start to skip again, take it back one step to walking before progressing again.

When you can do this without the skip, come back and we will discuss the run up.

In general, your bowling is really good L, we just need to get these few, niggly things sorted.

NB. You do not need to use a ball here!

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Thanks.

With the skip, what do I do? Like could you please explain what my legs do? Thanks.

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Its a quickstep or half step.

Its a rhythm malfunction! If you read music, you run up to four beats in the bar, crotchets, then at the end, you add a quaver.

If you don't read music... it can be likened to a nervous tick.

This hesitation, reduces your energy enormously and it is best to correct it.

You need to run up with equal length strides and bowl off the last stride foot contact and not add in this skip.

I think the problem lies in your first knee raise [bf] but as I cannot slow or freeze youtube videos, I cannot be 100% certain. During your walk through, raise your knees more exaggeratedly; before bfc, ffc and at hip drive.

When you progress to the five step run, don't let the first knee raise propel you upwards; your knee goes up but you stay down ;)

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Thanks for the clarification, Liz.

Haven't been able to work on it lately, because I've totally screwed my leg. I pulled a muscle under the knee and down into the calf. I got dad to work on it a few times but it hasn't helped. It's super bad...

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

I am surprised that your Dad has not been able to make any improvement. Do you remember how this happened?

When you say, "under the knee", do you mean right in the pit at the back?

When you say, "down into the calf", is this down the outside [lateral] or centre and how far down does it go?

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

I think it happened at training a few weeks back, coming into bowl and I felt a really sharp pain there and yeah I pulled away from the run up and bowled off-spin for the rest of the night.

Yep, in the pit at the back and I think in the centre of the calf. It doesn't go too far down.

Do you think I should play tomorrow or pull out? It's only a practice match and we have 14 players so...

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

If it is just a practise match, see how you go but don't force it.

Calf stretch as often as possible :)

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Practise match was called off, so the team went to the nets instead. I was fine at the start but then it started hurting lots so I just stood out and watched. Dad did a bit of work on it today. He said something about inside muscle/inside of the muscle was not big enough or something so the other had to compensate by over stretching or something like that? He also thinks I should get orthotics because my foot apparently rolls over on my ankle a bit and that might be the problem.

Hmm. Last round of cricket this week and then I can have 3 weeks rest from it. Hopefully I come back from the Christmas break with my calf fully better. But I dunno, this is taking longer to fix then before, hmm. It has stopped hurting under the knee when exercising, but when dad does the acupuncture and stuff it is still sore and tender.

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

My first thought was Plantaris but I am not able to see or feel.

Either way:

Some shock absorbers in the heels of both shoes for a couple of weeks would be good. The will help ease the load of walking.

Good calf stretches; gastrocnemius and soleus.

Cycling or swimming for 30 minutes a day will aid recovery by increasing blood flow to this area.

Rotate both feet whilst sitting, all directions.

Calf raises when you can to strengthen the muscles.

When ready, EASE yourself back in to the game.

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Hey Liz, the calf/knee is quite a bit better. I still feel it sometimes, but it's going away. Getting orthotics this week (dad reckons it will help with the knee problem).

Just a quick question, is there anything in my action that is decreasing my speed, other than my run-up?

BTW I've been too busy with matches to work on my run up. I'll work on it in the off season because I've had way to much cricket going on ATM.

Re: Bowling Video - New General Muscle Soreness

Hi Jonesy,

What I would really love is a video of your action after you have got used to the orthotics as this may change things :). Is there any chance?

Do keep stretching your calf and hams.

Yeah sure thing, it may take awhile though.

My bloody u16s keeper keeps up to the stumps to me, argh.
