England in New Zealand

The selectors announce the squads for New Zealand on Friday. They will probably also announce the Lions squad for India. Who would you choose -

Tests
Cook, Vaughan, Shah, Pietersen, Collingwood, Bell, Foster, Broad, Harmison, Hoggard, Panesar
reserves Strauss, Read, Tremlett, Anderson, Swann

ODIs
Cook, Mustard, Wright, Pietersen, Bell, Shah, Collingwood, Swann, Broad, Plunkett, Anderson
reserves Mascarenhas, Schofield, Solanki, Lewis, Bopara

Lions
Carberry, Key, Trott, Ali, Hildreth, Ambrose, Rashid, Bresnan, Harris, Jordan, Finn
reserves Onions, Jefferson, Tredwell

Re: England Tour of New Zealand

Id pretty much agree with your squads except Bopara in for Wright in the ODIs with mascarenhas in aswell maybe and prior as keeper for the tests. They may keep ravi in the test squad but play shah instead.

As for the lions id take Joe Denly and onions in the XI

Read and Solanki can't play for England.

Here's how i'd go:

Tests:Vaughan,Cook,Bell,Pietersen,Collingwood,Bopara,Prior,Sidebottom,
Hoggard,Harmison,Panesar,Strauss,Mustard,Shah,Broad,Tremlett

ODI's:Collingwood,Pietersen,Shah,Bell,Cook,Bopara,Prior,Mustard,Broad,
Sidebottom,Anderson,Maschereanas,Swann,Tremlett,Wright

Which one? The Fast bowler Simon Jones has been out almost full time since the 2005 ashes and a chance of him ever making a return to the international stage is very very slim.

The Wicketkeeper Geriant Jones just got dropped and a change of regieme means without brilliant performances in the county certain he will never make a return.

Basically i dont think either are coming back :p.

Says who? Just because they played in the ICL? I don't remember the ECB stating that players would be banned if they played there.

It's pretty obvious isn't it?The ICL isn't ICC recognised so why would these players get picked? They basically gave there International careers up to play in the ICL.

Get your facts right before you tell me 'its pretty obvious'. Just because the Indian and Pakistan boards have banned their players from playing, doesn't mean the ECB have.

Giles Clarke made it clear to these players playing in the ICL would hamper there chances of playing for England again.

Re: England Tour of New Zealand

I dont see why it should though, they werent contracted to their clubs as its the winter and it doesnt affect the ecb as they're not on international duty so by not being picked for the national side im sure they could try and sue the ecb for unfair reasoning or something.

i was talking about the fast bowler. the keeper is really really bad, never should have replaced read with him

Re: England Tour of New Zealand

Yer. Geriant is shocking :p.

Simon Jones is such an unlucky player, injured in a previous ashes series and needed knee surgery to rebuild he knee, he then comes back stronger and better and shows himself to be one of the most talented bowlers in the world before getting serious injurys and whenever hes made a comeback hes been quickly sidelined again. Something to do with he knee swelling up like a balloon every time he bowled last time i think.

Re: England Tour of New Zealand

Strauss has to play as far as i'm concerned. He had a blip in form in the summer, and in the Ashes, but he is one of England's most talented openers. I feel the decision to drop him against Sri Lanka was a good one, but feel that his style of play will definetly suit the NZ conditions. I'd drop Bopara, stick Vaughan down to 3, and go back to Cook and Strauss at the top of the order. Strauss is a magnificent player, and i feel that he still has a big future in English test cricket. If he gets another chance, i;m sure he'l perform brilliantly.

As for the bowlers, Harmy, Jimmy and Hoggy for me. Sidebottom IS one dimensional, relies on swing, and finds it very hard to take wickets without it. When theres no swing he tends to bowl far too straight, which allows top quality batsmen tojust ship him away on the leg-side. In home, swinging conditions he'd be a good choice, but i think a combination of Harmy, Hoggy and Jimmy is a much better attack. Anderson's going to be leading the attack in 2-3 years, so needs to be in the squad consistently, he's quick, accurate, swings the ball, aggressive, and a great fielder.

My team for the first test then:
Strauss
Cook
Vaughan
Pietersen
Bell
Collingwood
Prior
Hoggard
Harmison
Anderson
Panesar

Re: England Tour of New Zealand

I don't know whether ECB has stated anything against playing for ICL, but I am sure that BCCI will try to force ECB to ban the players. They already forced New Zealand Board to ignore players that played in ICL and I think they will want ECB to do the same.

Re: England Tour of New Zealand

ECB should not listen to BCCI. Its very unfair what they want. But i dont think that Read and Solanki are needed in the current England team.

Re: England Tour of New Zealand

Read is just a terrible, terrible player and should not get anywhere near a national side. Thankfully, for the time being he's taken the decision out of the hands of the selectors.

Not a fan of Ambrose (Moore is showing his short sightedness, which is something I hope he moves away from) nor Mustard and feel that the position will be just as much up in the air as it is now. Foster will be the next man called up for a run, if not Prior.

Davies from Worcestershire is the long term bet, expect him to be included in next years squad for the winter tours, then to make the position his for the next 10 years.

Re: England in New Zealand

The ODI's will be a hard fought contest, probably going into the last game, but England should win the tests easily I feel.

Re: England in New Zealand

Have to agree with you there wolf. Big fight for the keeping place as well, Mustard has the first chance to prove he's capable.
