England v Sri Lanka
England v Sri Lanka ODI Series Preview
From the sparse few months prior to the Twenty20 championship, we see a 3rd tour starting in as many days when England begin their split tour of Sri Lanka.
Despite the poor showing at the recent Twenty20 showpiece, England will be looking to build upon their recent form upturn in the 50 over game and attempt to beat a second consecutive Asian side.
Matters will not be helped by the absence of the talismanic Freddy Flintoff, who is once again sidelined by an ankle injury.
Elsewhere, England will resume the search for a long term wicket keeper with the inclusion of Phil Mustard, brought in to cover the injured Prior. Hailed by many as a next big thing, Sri Lanka culd prove a baptism of fire for this young glove man. Graeme Swann, returning after a solitary appearance 7 years ago, is the other major addition to the squad, getting the nod as much for his batting as bowling ability. It will be interesting to see whether England keep faith with Panesar, who is still learning the ropes when it comes to the one day game.
Batting wise England will once again look towards the key trio of Bell, Pietersen and Collingwood to help bolster any start made by Cook and in all likelihood Mustard. This series will also give us a further chance to witness the future as both Broad and Bopara should have big parts to play, indeed, who could forget Bopara’s doomed efforts in the world cup game between these two? A big question mark will hang over the head of Broad and he will surely welcome some early success in order to banish the memories of those 6 balls to Yuvraj Singh.
Sri Lanka, who are being turned into a formidable one day team by skipper Mahela Jayawardne will be looking to welcome back Muttiah Muralitharan, will provide an extremely stiff challenge, especially on home turf.
Indeed if England are going to get anything from this series they will have to contain the explosive Sanath Jayasuriya, the middle order elegance of Mahela Jayawardne and Kumar Sangakarra, the ever reliable Vaas and the ferocious Lasith Malinga. This is all without a certain spinner from Kandy to contend with.
It will be up to Collingwood to marshal his young troops into a fighting machine worthy of matching the Lankans, with the mouth-watering but key battle surely between Pietersen v Muralitharan. Whoever comes out on top between the two will go a long way to deciding who gets the upper hand before the even more serious business of the test series to come in December.
