England v Sri Lanka

England v Sri Lanka ODI Series Preview

From the sparse few months prior to the Twenty20 championship, we see a 3rd tour starting in as many days when England begin their split tour of Sri Lanka.

Despite the poor showing at the recent Twenty20 showpiece, England will be looking to build upon their recent form upturn in the 50 over game and attempt to beat a second consecutive Asian side.
Matters will not be helped by the absence of the talismanic Freddy Flintoff, who is once again sidelined by an ankle injury.

Elsewhere, England will resume the search for a long term wicket keeper with the inclusion of Phil Mustard, brought in to cover the injured Prior. Hailed by many as a next big thing, Sri Lanka culd prove a baptism of fire for this young glove man. Graeme Swann, returning after a solitary appearance 7 years ago, is the other major addition to the squad, getting the nod as much for his batting as bowling ability. It will be interesting to see whether England keep faith with Panesar, who is still learning the ropes when it comes to the one day game.

Batting wise England will once again look towards the key trio of Bell, Pietersen and Collingwood to help bolster any start made by Cook and in all likelihood Mustard. This series will also give us a further chance to witness the future as both Broad and Bopara should have big parts to play, indeed, who could forget Bopara’s doomed efforts in the world cup game between these two? A big question mark will hang over the head of Broad and he will surely welcome some early success in order to banish the memories of those 6 balls to Yuvraj Singh.

Sri Lanka, who are being turned into a formidable one day team by skipper Mahela Jayawardne will be looking to welcome back Muttiah Muralitharan, will provide an extremely stiff challenge, especially on home turf.

Indeed if England are going to get anything from this series they will have to contain the explosive Sanath Jayasuriya, the middle order elegance of Mahela Jayawardne and Kumar Sangakarra, the ever reliable Vaas and the ferocious Lasith Malinga. This is all without a certain spinner from Kandy to contend with.

It will be up to Collingwood to marshal his young troops into a fighting machine worthy of matching the Lankans, with the mouth-watering but key battle surely between Pietersen v Muralitharan. Whoever comes out on top between the two will go a long way to deciding who gets the upper hand before the even more serious business of the test series to come in December.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

I don't understand why the tests and the one dayers are spread apart like this!We play the one dayers then come home Australia go to Sri Lanka then we come back! How strange!

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Muttiah Muralitharan has been ruled out of the first three one-day internationals against England. Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka's captain, confirmed that Muralitharan's biceps injury had not healed.

"We don't want to rush him," Jayawardene said. "He's almost there, but we just have to make a decision whether we would like to risk him like this soon after injury. We will make sure that we will make a sensible decision." Sri Lanka's priority is to get him fit for their trip to Australia which follows almost immediately after the five-match series against England.

Such is the shadow that Muralitharan casts over matches that at the press conference today Paul Collingwood, England's captain, seemed reluctant to believe that he would not be playing. "We're preparing as if Murali is playing and we will still prepare in this way," he said.
From Cricinfo

Good news as far as England are concerned as the little wizard from Kandy does seem to have a hold over them.

If England can make the most of his absence then it could have a big bearing on the final outcome. Regardless, I like the way that England are preparing as if he will play, can't do any harm as Sri Lanka will have Jayasuria and Lokuarachchi to fall back on.

Elsewhere it remains to be seen how many players England have fit after astomach bug, which is doing the rounds. So far, Paul Collingwood, Stuart Broad, Luke Wright and Alastair Cook are all suffering from it. They are still waiting to see how long it takes to clear, although it's expected to be a 24-36 hour bug.

England's first game is on Friday, against a Sri Lanka Board President's XI.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

England off to a promising site with a 100 for Bell and 50's for Cook and Pietersen, as they racked up over 300.

Now lets see how the bowlers do.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

All in all, a promising start and good win for England, especially as they do have a habit of losing these kind of games.

Most of the bowlers had a run out and it seems that the stomach bug has done the rounds and moved on.

Looking forward to the first one day game!

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka have put up a good total on the board. Their batsmen did well even though the ball wasn't coming on to the bat.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Disappointing for England as they slump to a heavy defeat by 119 runs.

Few bright spots to take from the game, Cook batted well for his 46 and Swann chipped in with a wicket and a few runs.

Sri Lanka played well, Maharoof in particular bowled superbly to end with 4-31 off 10.

Can England pick themselves up for the next game?

Re: England v Sri Lanka

It seems that England will again leave out Panesar and instead play Swann.

What do you think about this? Is it the right move by England or a negative step which will deny Monty the chance to develop his one day game?

Granted Swann offers a lot more with the bat and has had a great deal more experience, not only due to the age difference but because he is played regularly by his county.

Should England even go in with 2 spinners? Is that a realistic option?

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Not all of these Lankan pitches are big turners, but those that are, Monty P should get on, along with Swanny, both add the spin option, Swann adds the bat option.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan wickets will suit slower bowlers more. They should play Monty along with Swann imo.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

ha ha - they are having problems with a load of dogs coming onto the pitch

comedy! its a one day dog show

Re: England v Sri Lanka

England in a bit of troube at the 36th over. OA Shah still in on 37* but Bopara has gone, and the good partnership with Collingwood has long gone, time for Graeme Swann to show his batting prowress!

Re: England v Sri Lanka

England did really well. Great comeback after defeat in the first match.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Cracking win Shah was brilliant on a tricky pitch so too Swann has to be the first choice spinner in one dayers now surely?I'd also hazard a guess that he'll be the second spinner in the test tour.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

I think Shah is a decent bowler to, hes bowled a bit for England in the ODI, 2 overs wasn't it? But for Middlesex he has had a few overs here and there, but i reckon its going to be,

Mustard
Cook
Vaughan
Pietersen
Collingwood
Bell
Swann
Shah/Tremlett/Broad
Sidebottom
Andersen
Panesar

Prior will be back for the tests so it's unlikely Mustard will play in them and even more unlikely that he would open. And also your missing Harmison and Hoggard in your team both are two of the best in the country!

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Oh didnt know how long Prior was out

Ok i'll redo the squad!

Strauss
Cook
Vaughan
Bell
KP
Collingwood
Prior
Broad/Shah/Swann
Hoggard
Harmison/Tremlett
Panesar
