Re: England v Sri Lanka

england lost the match by 107 runs :eek:hmy:... i think they take this match less seriously after series win but they played good cricket to beat sri lanka.... england has improved in odi after the series with west indies

Re: England v Sri Lanka

England announce the squad for the test series agqainst Sri Lanka tomorrow and there are a few questions to ponder.

Do they drop Strauss? If so, who comes in? Ramprakash, Shah or someone else? Also, does Prior deserve to come straight back into the team after injury? Mustard hardly fired although there are other keepers on the A' tour to India who could be called up, if needed.

Swann should find a place which completes he remarkable return from the wilderness.

Possible England Test party for Sri Lanka:

M Vaughan (capt), A Cook, K Pietersen, P Collingwood, I Bell, O Shah, R Bopara, M Prior (w/k), R Sidebottom, S Harmison, M Panesar, G Swann, M Hoggard, J Anderson, S Broad.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

I keep uhmming and ahhhing over who, at the moment i'd go with,

1. O. Shah (shocking i know but i'd drop Strauss, see how Shah goes)
2. A. Cook (The breakthrough batsmen for England, hes done almost nothing wrong)
3. M. Vaughan (Captain, has to be in there just for that!)
4. K. Pietersen (Says he doesnt like this spot, but has to be there)
5. I. Bell
6. P. Collingwood (The two of these could get each other out the side, but they cant be replace at this current time)
7. G. Swann (Worth a chance for the 1st Test)
8. Wicket Keeper (I'll discuss in a second)
9. S. Broad (LONG batting line up, to go with a pretty good number 8/9)
10. 2nd bowler
11. Panesar/ third bowler

Ok, Wicketkeepers,

Mustard,
Prior,
Ambrose,
Read, (My personal choice)

Theres a few more, but those are the 4 top.

My number 10. has to be either Hoggy, Curly locks (Sidebottom), Tremmo (Tremlett) or i would actually put in Anderson, Anderson has to be there on these tracks, but i suppose its difficult.

My number 11, if Swann fires, i cant really see a case for Monty to be honest, the selectors strive for a longer batting order, Swanny offers it. In the place of Mr. Panesar i'd have one of the above, probably Sidebottom, but i suppose you'd have to go for Hoggard, wouldnt you?

If anything, if Strauss is dropped, i can see I.Bell being asked to open, its unfair, as he isnt an out an out opener, but its a test place for him. I just dont know, we have a good/great bowling attack, its just, against this Sri Lanka side, we need the runs, would i be good practise to put Monty in if Swann and to some extent Vaughan and Shah fire on these pitches?

Oh the decisions!

is harmission going to play in the first test? i heard that he got injured yet again.

Hasn't proved he's bowling well. It's unlikely he will as he isn't going to bowl in this match.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

i read recently that fernando was going to play despite ankle injury. i think only murali will be a threat for england the rest of the bowlers are nothing special and with fernando in the side english batsmen should have a good time if they can hold one end up against murali.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Ravi simply has to be in the team. What a player! Top scored today while the rest of the team whimpered and collapsed. Not too bad with the new ball either collecting a lovely 32/2. Hoggy bowled beautifully to get 5 wickets.

The batting still seems a bit of a worry with kp not getting in form but im sure he'll be fine in the series.

Seems like the pitch must have done a fair bit if both sides got rolled over like that!Let's hope we get a good session in the middle tomorrow.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

From what I've read it seems like the pitch quickened up overnight. The ball was moving yesterday only a bit lower and a lot slower.

Hoggard is a certainty to come back in for the first test, although at the moment it looks like either Harmison or Anderson will miss out due to fitness rather than form.

England should have enough to win this game, KP should move up the order as he badly needs time in the middle to find some form.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

In the end a good win for England and Anderson was able to bowl (ok, it was only one over).

KP got some time in the middle, Cook is looking in form and we have competition for places. You would have to say that things look good from an England point of view.

I would go with Bopara over Shah for the first test - anyone else got thoughts on this?

Bopara in for me.Seems to be in form with the bat and can do a good job with the ball aswell as been an excellent fielder.Sri Lanka's pace attack doesn't faze me too much it's just the Murali factor if we play him well then we can win.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

I would give my vote to Bopara as well. Not much to choose in the batting between the two but Bopara gives an extra option with the ball, which looking at our pace attack may be needed. (not saying they're rubbish, just a bit fragile!)

Re: England v Sri Lanka

That's not a bad point but doesn't Shah turn his arm over from time to time? Also, England could call on KP and Vaughn if they were really in the mire in terms of bowlers.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

i think srilanka will win because of murali and sangakkara there top players are very dangerous......odi was easier because murali was not playing....but in test i think they will lose.

Despite the might of the two you mentioned there seems to be a far bit of tension in the team which has to work in Englands favour.

England will win this series 1-0, with 2 very hard fought draws, Murali will be a big threat, as always, but one man can't win a series.

As to the other issue, for me it has to be Shah. The better batsman and the man in waiting. He plays spin well and I back him to average 45+ if he plays in all 3 tests.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

dont forget you will play srilanka at home....they are very strong at home i dont think england can win the series....only if they drop vaas or malinga to get fernando in the team then england can win the series.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Looks like Harmison is fit to be considered for the first test but I just don't think they'll go with him.

Sidebottom, Hoggard, Panesar are certain starters with Anderson taking the 4th bowling spot?
