I think there is a reason that his strike rate drops so vehemently (good word) in ODIs when the economy goes up and T20s when it goes up further.
He hates been attacked as he's said before.Didn't do too well in for Lancs in the twenty20.I think he thrives on having men around the bat and them just blocking him.We saw in Ausland he got attacked and wasn't half the bowler he is in Sri Lanka, that might have a bit do with the pitches though.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

I just think that it may be better to try to score a quickish 30/40 off him than sit around for a sketchy 20.

It's no good allowing him to create pressure by blocking everything, it lets him get in your mind as well as the mind of others.

That's what he thrives on building up the pressure with the vulchers around the bat i think if you can attack and get them men spread out you will have it easier.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Certainly moving men away from around the bat negates the chance of a bat\pad catch and also means you play with slightly harder hands.

No matter what he'll be a handful but why make it harder on yourself by giving him the mental edge?

You're just a Bopara fan boy!

Nothing wrong with that at all :p. In 20 years when they talk about him being the best player ever in cricket you'll eat your words :D. Unlucky today played a bit of a bad shot but to play murali in your first test is a massive challenge!

Get a lead tomorrow and try and skittle them out. This game is certainly in the balance. Panesar could win or lose the match for england. Time to stand up and be counted :D.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

You have to say a poor day for England, although it was too be expected.

We need to score what ever we can to get a lead and hope Hoggy and Monty do the business again.

I wouldn't want to be chasing 250 on this wicket.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

England have taken a handy lead of 93 runs. I think Sri Lanka will need to score in excess of 300 if they have to set a challenging target for England. England are in the drivers seat right now.
However, Murali has stolen all the attention as he becomes the world's highest wicket taker in tests with his 6 wicket haul.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Fair play to Sidebottom, did just what we needed and got us almost to the 100 lead, just need early wickets now.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Wicket seems to have got a bit harder for bowlers if we can bowl them out for 300ish then he have a fair chance anything over 250 i can't see us getting.Pietersen is to bat at seven i hear too.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

england have lost the momentum in this match, murali has spun the game in lankas favour and pierterson with the broken finger is not a good sign, at least he can bat 4 and its only his little one

Re: England v Sri Lanka

'Actually, it was the off break and was supposed to turn into his pads. But the ball was newer and it skidded straight on. I guess I was lucky.'

Quote of the Day! The Genius Murali admits that even he was bamboozled by his record breaking wicket.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Cannot believe that England have managed to get themselves into a situation where it seems that we are destined to lose the match. Monty needs more of the ball and playing another spinner was probably the right thing to do.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

i think murali has to bowl at least 35 overs tomorrow and if he does he will pick at least 5 wickets. i think england can save the test if they play positive cricket. should be an exciting day of play tomorrow. hoping that england manage to draw the match.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

england lost the match by 107 runs :eek:hmy:... i think they take this match less seriously after series win but they played good cricket to beat sri lanka.... england has improved in odi after the series with west indies

Re: England v Sri Lanka

England announce the squad for the test series agqainst Sri Lanka tomorrow and there are a few questions to ponder.

Do they drop Strauss? If so, who comes in? Ramprakash, Shah or someone else? Also, does Prior deserve to come straight back into the team after injury? Mustard hardly fired although there are other keepers on the A' tour to India who could be called up, if needed.

Swann should find a place which completes he remarkable return from the wilderness.

Possible England Test party for Sri Lanka:

M Vaughan (capt), A Cook, K Pietersen, P Collingwood, I Bell, O Shah, R Bopara, M Prior (w/k), R Sidebottom, S Harmison, M Panesar, G Swann, M Hoggard, J Anderson, S Broad.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

I keep uhmming and ahhhing over who, at the moment i'd go with,

1. O. Shah (shocking i know but i'd drop Strauss, see how Shah goes)
2. A. Cook (The breakthrough batsmen for England, hes done almost nothing wrong)
3. M. Vaughan (Captain, has to be in there just for that!)
4. K. Pietersen (Says he doesnt like this spot, but has to be there)
5. I. Bell
6. P. Collingwood (The two of these could get each other out the side, but they cant be replace at this current time)
7. G. Swann (Worth a chance for the 1st Test)
8. Wicket Keeper (I'll discuss in a second)
9. S. Broad (LONG batting line up, to go with a pretty good number 8/9)
10. 2nd bowler
11. Panesar/ third bowler

Ok, Wicketkeepers,

Mustard,
Prior,
Ambrose,
Read, (My personal choice)

Theres a few more, but those are the 4 top.

My number 10. has to be either Hoggy, Curly locks (Sidebottom), Tremmo (Tremlett) or i would actually put in Anderson, Anderson has to be there on these tracks, but i suppose its difficult.

My number 11, if Swann fires, i cant really see a case for Monty to be honest, the selectors strive for a longer batting order, Swanny offers it. In the place of Mr. Panesar i'd have one of the above, probably Sidebottom, but i suppose you'd have to go for Hoggard, wouldnt you?

If anything, if Strauss is dropped, i can see I.Bell being asked to open, its unfair, as he isnt an out an out opener, but its a test place for him. I just dont know, we have a good/great bowling attack, its just, against this Sri Lanka side, we need the runs, would i be good practise to put Monty in if Swann and to some extent Vaughan and Shah fire on these pitches?

Oh the decisions!

Re: England v Sri Lanka

The England squad has been announced and with the news that Strauss has been dropped.

Vaughn will now open with Cook.

England squad: Michael Vaughan (Yorkshire, captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Paul Collingwood (Durham), Alastair Cook (Essex), Matthew Hoggard (Yorkshire), Phil Mustard (Durham), Monty Panesar (Northamptonshire), Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire), Matt Prior (Sussex), Owais Shah (Middlesex), Ryan Sidebottom (Nottinghamshire), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire).

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Not looking good for England. 5 down already and Murali hasn't taken a single wicket.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Changed my thoughts again,

Re: England v Sri Lanka

We finally got to lunch, 5 down but a chance to save the game?

A lot rests on Bopara and Bell, if they stay in for most of the next session the it swings back to us slightly.

Re: England v Sri Lanka

Bad session for England. Bopara and bell have to bat all day because if they get out murali wont take much time to get the rest of the wickets.
