Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

After the Geelong Cricket team for country week turned into such a joke last season, I wonder how seriously the GCA will go about inforcing players to play this season.
The team was no where nears its best and still made the GF.
But your right, missing work and other commitments is certainly a problem. But, I suppose it comes down to how desperatly you want to play for your city and comp.

Agree to a point but it is a pretty fair honour to be selected to play for Vic Country. Me personally; I would move heaven and earth to get the time off work.

I agree. It would be a great honour!

I think there will be a bit of renewed interest in Country Week this coming season. There will probably be some sort of crieteria imposed on clubs as well with players being made a litle bit more accountable. The good thing is though, many players that went last year were first-timers and they showed great enthusiasm and posted some good results; so guess what they will be first in line now. Players that come to mind are Rhys Zanoni, Steve Illingworth, Sam Hall and Tim Clarke. At the end of the day, you only want to take players away who want to play.

i suppose at the end of the day the players who want to go away are the players who will do well.

GCA can not force people to play country week. It will never happen.

You had a team that all wanted to play last year, and while on paper they did not look as strong as previous years, they did extremely well.

If you are desperate to play for you city and at the highest level, country week would not be your aim, but premier cricket surely.

I think Country Week is great a couple of times. You get to play with the guys that you normally play against and see them in a new light.

But you only get 4 weeks annual leave (unless you are a teacher), and I can think of many better ways to spend it, (once you have been a few times already)

Good point. The GCA probably should not be relying on all the old heads anyway and the really good thing about last season's team is that it probably heralded in the new era and the next generation of players to represent the association. The Illingworth's Halls, Marslands, etc are the future of the comp and the older blokes have either had their time or will make themselves available if keen. Probably the bottom line is the research should be done first in selecting the squad and only select players who are avaialble. At least then, there is a training squad and players can fight for spots from there.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

hey how old is Steve Illingworth ? I don't think he is as young as everyone thinks he is ?? Not in the same age class as Marsland. Also did anyone see him in the ad that was on the big screen at Skilled Stadium on the weekend telling people to put stuff in the bins ? Now that was a funny ad. Should be back up there this week against the Dogs I reckon !

wats brendan halls history?

Played all his Geelong cricket with Grovedale. Coached at least 1 year I think. Scary quick bowler, and good bat who made 70 odd in a grand final opening v East Belmont.
I believe he loves his golf too much to play, let alone coach.

I have faced them both and there is no way in hell that Hally was as quick as Harper in his hay day. Harper would eat him alive. He was quick, but not silly quick. It was more the height he came from that made him hard to play. I still say that Quick, Weiss (when at North) and Simon Keogh from South Barwon were the quickest in the last 15 years.

The Wilson boys when at East Belmont were quick on their day.

Anderson is a very good keeper. Good call. But did he actually keep last year? The word is Breuer has retired from keeping this year. Very sore as he has kept for 20 years. Stuffed legs and hands.

breuer would have sore legs..... been carrying round plenty of kgs.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

Yes true. The Wilsons were quick, but more dangerous. Peter Smith from East was also very sharp.

Easier to stop the balls when you are bigger apparently!!! Less gets past you I suppose. Does a good job though.
