Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

2-dayers are ok until you get a team out in 70 overs, and are rewarded by going out to bat for ten overs, scoring a globe and spending all next week watching your mates score 100's.

Also, there are a few clubs around who you can pretty much guarantee will underprepare their pitch if they are bowling on the second week

Just to save the intrigue (and me repeating myself 100 times), Becko was a sock puppet account. The owner asked me to remove the account as he was getting fed up of it.

That really is my last word on the subject, unless it's via pm.

i think you'll find ... and guys, feel free to correct me if i'm wrong ... most people in the gca (and maybe the bpca) would rather all 1 dayers, and get rid of the 2 day game.
thoughts?

Yes One-day cricket is the way forward. Good example with South posting 392, rains all day next saturday and both teams get a draw, not good enough.

Also need to eliminate outright points, not fair on the whole competition. Say Thomson are really struggling this season and St Peters play us in a one-dayer, bowl us out for 35 and pass us in the 8th over. Next week we play a 2dayer, Manifold bowl us out for 60, pass us 1 down inside 15 overs and put us back in an beat us outright, that's not fair on St Peters who would've also beaten us outright if they had of played us in a 2 day game.

Another example is saturday we fielded for 85 overs, i didn't take a catch and didn't get a bowl, why would i want to do that every second saturday? Not the greatest encouragement to keep everyone interested in playing locally. At least with a one-day game, first 15 overs are exciting, fields up batsmen are having a go, last 10 overs is the same, so only got 25 overs to keep yourself entertained and really "get through". Also you get a bat everyweek and it eliminates outrights.

Play every team home and away (fair draw) only need 22 saturdays regular season - no finals, winner is on top after round 22, shorter season - longer christmas break and player unavailability will 1/2 as alot of players miss a full match (2 days) because they are only unable to play 1 day.

Try saturday afternoon when your trying to captain your side with all that running through your head, also forgot to add that it usually always rains in England so that comes into play. It was a nightmare at times.

I thought he quit St Albans CC?

Last season he was over watching us play Corio in the Quarter-Final whilst you guys were playing down the road, he told everyone at Thomson he quit, obviously been welcomed back with open arms?

What memories, the 5 years I spent over there playing one day cricket with winning & losing draws, wins & losses was absolutely crap.

On a number of occasions, we had sides 9/70 after posting 250+ batting first. side batting second just shut up shop, played for the losing draw, got the points because we didn't get the last wicket.
Then get this, we actually won more games than 1/2 the sides we played against and we finished in the bottom 3, just missed relegation. the other sides fiished mid table with 2 wins for the year. WORK THAT OUT.

AS for one day cricket all year round, bring it on, a lot easier to get sides together with people working shift work etc; :D

And for us older guys a bit easier on the body and recovery.

Before you young lads have a crack, you'll be there sooner than later and will know what I'm talking about if you don't know already :D

Top levels aren't that similar, VCA 1st XI is a huge step ahead of any top leagues i saw around counties. Also our State XI's are also higher in standard than your county league. This is mainly due to the English County system having 18 teams and 2 overseas players per 1st XI then on top of that Kolpak players. I think it was in last season's 20/20 finals day, one team had only 2 english-born players in the 11.

As for a "funny system" the league i played in England had a pretty weird points system and this is how it worked.

One-day 100 over match.
Team batting first has option of batting 55 overs.
Bonus points for batting at the 45 over mark: -
100 runs - 1 points
120 runs - 2 points
140 runs - 3 points
160 runs - 4 points
180 runs - 5 points
But if you batted past 50 overs your bonus batting points were lost (eg: 167/2 after 45 overs, bat to 50 overs - 4 points, bat to 55 overs - 0 points).
The team batting first had their batting points doubled (eg: 167/2 after 45 overs - 4 points (x2) = 8 points)
For every odd-wicket you get a point.
1 wicket - 1 point
3 wickets - 2 points
5 wickets - 3 points
7 wickets - 4 points
9 wickets - 5 points
But this is where it gets complicated, the team batting second must be bowled out completely (eg:10 wickets) for the team batting first to get win points. If the team batting 2nd doesn't get bowled out it's declared a drawn match (eg: both teams get a further 2 points, on top of their batting/bowling points)

For example: St Josephs vs Lara Round 2 http://mycricket.cricket.com.au/com...loc=/cricket/reports/match.asp&matchID=494001

Geelong West batted first were over 180 at the 45 over mark (10 points)
Lara got 9 wickets (5 points)

Lara batted second and were over 180 at the 45 over mark (5 points)
Geelong West got 6 wickets (3 points)

Lara chased down Geelong West's score therefore get 20 points for the win, plus they get their batting points (5). Total points: Lara 25, West 13

A hypothetical if Lara finished at 6-220 off their 50 overs.

The batting and bowling points would be the same but because Lara couldn't chase down West's total and West couldn't bowl Lara out the match is declared a draw, 2 points each.
Therefore the points would read: Lara (12), West (13)

When you played against a weaker team often they would just shut-up shop from over 1 and bat for the draw, making for the boringest 50 overs and 3 hours of your life.

I think the best format would be if we played English style (100 one-day match) with Australian points (6 win, 3 tie, loss).

Levels are hard to compare, although I agree that overall the Australian system produces better cricketers, in larger numbers.

They have tried to address this with the introduction of the ECB premier leagues, which are about the same as county 2nd standards (or should be as a lot of counties use them instead of a 2nd XI), however this standard is largely down to 4/5 players rather than the team as a whole.

My home town club have always tended to have a 1st grade level player as an overseas, mainly from the Brisbane or the Queensland area. Last year they had a keeper from Western Suburbs (Giarola?) who seemed a reasonable player. Didn't set the leagues on fire but the summer was rubbish and he took time to get used to the wickets, which were often damp, low and slow.

Generally though, the overseas will normally be towards the top of the averages (which they're paid for I guess).

As for the scoring system, yeah, it can be a bit confusing/weird and not helped by the fact that every league has it's own variations or point thresholds. The main idea behind them is to encourage positive cricket, getting teams to go for the runs or wickets to score a point extra here or there. The winning or losing draws should be phased out though as they don't really help anything and some ways contradict the idea of positive cricket because, as you said, the weaker teams will just shut up shop.
