The ICC and the networks would also lose money. Potential or current subscribers would no longer want to pay money for something they can get for free by simply accessing the videos on YouTube.

No, they would not.

1. I've said it before, fans hardcore enough to pay $200 to watch the complete games, would not give them up just for couple minutes of highlights on Youtube. Those who have decided to pay that kind of money have already subscribed, and the PPV networks already got their money. I mean, those who would have done it, already have. Not many, if any, would subscribe now for the same money when half of the games are gone, just because some (not all) of the highlights are gone from Youtube. If I'm not mistaken, they don't have the option of paying for single games.

2. They are actually losing the opportunity to gain more fans worldwide (and that equals money long term) who would be exposed to the event through YT highlights. They would not become hardcore fans overnight, but there has to be a start somewhere and this would be it.

3. There are dozens of websites that are streaming live matches in full, many of them for free. They are probably the real threat to ICC and the broadcasting networks. If ICC must do something to keep their partners happy they should focus fully on taking down those sites instead.

We all know the ICC is money-hungry, there's no doubting that.

I think it's safe to say that 20 years from now cricket won't be any more popular with these terribly short-sighted people in charge. FIFA is money-hungry too, but thank God, they are not half as retarded as the ICC.

mate, great post, all 3 points are valid and i agree with you.

Re: ICC suspends USA Cricket Association

I agree also, mamun79.

Paying $200 for access to all of the matches may seem like a good deal in terms of the sheer number of hours of footage one gains access to, but who has time to watch all that? It is really ridiculous that there are not smaller packages available. I do not have satellite television, nor do I have the money to buy the World Cup pay-per-view package, but even if I did, I couldn't justify spending that amount of money for it.

I think the third point you have raised is very relevent to this topic. If there are sites that stream the cup or have videos of the games then cricket fans are less likely to pay to see the World Cup on TV.

I am sure that there would be full videos of games on YouTube, especially since they are struggling to remove all of the 2007 World Cup content from the site.

Yes, they are. The ICC can't see that though and they are trying to protect their own interests rather than try to promote the game.

The World Cup is cricket's most prestigous event and is covered by many media outlets globally. The World Cup would be an awesome opportunity for the ICC to promote the game and generate interest among those countries and/or people who have little knowledge about the game. But, the ICC is more concerend to watch it rake in the dollars rather than try and spread the word about cricket.

First, you are spot on all around. On this first point, I fully agree. The youtube highlights WILL NOT prevent anyone who still wants to order from doing so, and NO ONE who ordered will cancel due to them. However, an alternate marketing approach would have been to offer A) The whole World Cup at $200, and B) individual games at say, $35, even $25. What does this accomplish? Well, some people just aren't the brightest crayon in the box. They will think, $35 is alot less than $200, and only a handful of premium games. This isn't just one or two individuals. There will be many who do not realize the value of ALL games for $200 instead of an opener, a Super 8, and a final for $105. $35/25 today, $35/25 later in the month, and $35/25 at the end, spread out, just doesn't have the same ring as $200 upfront. In addition, I would be willing to bet that individuals who saw the highlights on youtube and became interested in Cricket, would consider buying a match or two at $35/25 now. There is no way they will pay $200 half way through, but the option of purchasing matches now may seem attractive to them.

Again I fully agree and do not have much to add to this excellent observation. If you look at above, this new exposure in conjunction with a per game option may have resulted in increased revenue

Not much to add to that.

I don't know about FIFA being much brighter than the ICC.

Re: ICC suspends USA Cricket Association

To clarify my response to point one, where it seems I contradict myself. When I first say youtube highlights WILL NOT prevent anyone who wants to pay $200 for the remainder, I am referring to persons already fans of Cricket, whereas towards the end of my reply, those who I refer to as NOT WILLING to pay $200 for the remainder of the tournament are those who becme interested/ where exposed to the World Cup because of the highlight videos.

Re: ICC suspends USA Cricket Association

Excellent posts all around. It is too bad the games weren't sold in patches, when you think about it, I'm sure not everybody will be watching every single game.

The broadcasting of the games were being sold for the same $200 locally. I did not personally purchase the package because i knew i wouldn't be able to watch every single game and $200 would be a waste for me. However i found this lovely website that sold live streaming video of the games for only $15 each game to be shown on my PC. The picture and stream were flawless.

If anyone wants to they could check it out at www.cricketontv.com
