Jaques needs to prove to the selectors that he is worthy of his spot back with his only 1st Class hit-out at the end of the month before the selectors pick the squad or Hughes gets the nod. Forget about Klinger, he's had ample time to produce on the talent everyone in Victoria knew about but he has wasted any chance he had of playing in a Baggy Green. Sure he has had a fine season in 08/09 thus far but he couldn't buy a run for the 6 or so seasons previous he was in the First Class scene. We need either; a proven performer or a young kid who has potential, not some late 20's one season wonder.

I won't say that he is more deserving of a spot than Hughes/Jacques/Rogers, because he probably isn't, but the team should always be picked on current form and merit, rather than past form or reputation. This 'past performances' mindset is why Hayden is still flailing around out there instead of some fresh new talent

Agree on Klinger.... sort of. If he can back his form up next year, then I reckon he should come right into contention. Also, if Rogers wasn't also having a very good season, and Jaques wasn't coming back from injury, and Hughes wasn't around, he'd be my first choice. Lots of "ifs" there, but my point is that he shouldn't be completely out of contention, merely that players with similar records or claims, or in Hughes' case, fantastic potential, should be considered slightly ahead of him.

OK, I guess we agree then. Just the way you said it seemed to suggest that Klinger should be completely left out of contention. :)

I am not going to write him off yet.

It seems like Dejavous when he is struggling for form and has a great ODI series and keeps his place.

I don't think he should keep it though.

He hasn't had a decent innings for god knows how long.
Needs to spend some time at the crease in the whites, not coloured uniforms, next World Cup is 3 years away.
Hayden needs to go back and play 1st Class Cricket with the Bulls for the remainder of the summer, or retire.

Michael Hussey has seen no signs from Matthew Hayden that he is about to retire and would be stunned if the opener was not part of next month's tour to South Africa. Hayden scored 39 in the second innings to continue his horrible run at home this season a

I think it's time for Hayden to go. He's been in woeful form in the last year or so. His away form is what will worry Aussie fans and selectors most I think. In the past 4 years the only 2 English batsmen to have worse away records are Michael Vaughan and Andrew Flintoff. The rest, Pietersen, Bell, Cook, Strauss, and Collingwood all have a better record. Not exactly brilliant for Hayden, especially when you consider how much Englands batting line-up has been slagged off in the past few years.

I would like to see him keep going, as he's immensely entertaining to watch, and he's not exactly got a good record in England, so having him in the Ashes squad would be good for England at least :p. I think the ODi series will be the big test, if he performs there he'll be in the South Africa Tour Squad I imagine.

If Hayden gets an Ashes gig it will be a tremendous blunder, equal to that of England playing Giles and G.Jones in the 06/07 Ashes. Based on what's been reported in the media, Hayden has no intention of retiring before the ashes, and given Hilditch's apparent ineptitude for selecting teams, we may very well see him at Lords come July.

I highly doubt it mate TBH.

If he can't find some form in the odis then his career will be over.

So unless his Form improves he won't get an ashes gig IMO.

Agreed.

Cant see it happening though, as Phil Jaques will be over his back ailment and will take Haydo's opening spot.

I think that is a big problem. The bloke is struggling, doesn't want to retire and the chairman of selectors is too much of an idiot to see that his best days of averaging 50+ are over. He averaged, what, 30 is 2008? I'm a big fan of him, but he has to go. I don't know what they are hoping for. Best situation: he gets his form back... and retires after the ashes? Not worth it, get someone in and ready for international cricket in time for the tour of England. Jeez, so simple.

I love the man but he is finished.
We can't take him to South Africa or England on the back of a good one day series. He has to make runs in tests and he had 5 tests to do so and couldn't get a half century in 9 innings.
Form speaks for itself. The selectors gave him long enough to prove that he was good enough to continue but he didn't prove anything.
We can't win in South Africa with him there and we will struggle heavily to win with him there in the Ashes.
Phil Jacques has to be his replacement. He is a ready made player. Has a test average of 47 and 3 hundreds from 11 matches which is a good strike rate. If he isn't fit in time for South Africa. We have to either take Rogers or move Hussey up to open and put in a specialist no.4 i.e D.Hussey or Hodge for the tour of South Africa.
Hughes is too young at the moment with not enough experience to be thrown in the deep end to play South Africa and England. If we were playing Sri Lanka or West Indies or someone i would say yes wack Hughes in.
Maybe the best way to introduce Hughes is in the one day format this season. The only thing is he averages only 36 which isn't to bad i suppose but has a strike rate of only 68 but he needs to be blooded.
Either way Hayden needs to go and we need a man with the experience of Jacques to open up in England.
