Several Fast Bowling Questions

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Okay, today, my brother took a clip of me bowling from a direct in front view in view of my feet. I advise you full screen it since I was in the shade of my house.

Apologies for the run up:laugh:

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Your brother is so good to you.

How did you find the delivery? Did the ball end up where you wanted it to?

This was not a bad bowl; I can see a couple of changes but tell me Manee, what were you working on to correct?

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

I did not release the ball as it would have crashed into a few cars ;) but tbh it was at the beginning of a session so I was not working on anything, except getting everything going in a straight line. I'll be posting clips throughout half term of my progress with my kind brother as coach.

I have been working since that clip at getting the top half of the body more side on. In the future, I wish to also have a more explosive follow through.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Day 2 of my brother's boot camp is finished. We have worked on:

Day 1: Getting side on
Day 2: Alter load up (bowling arm from neck straight down to hip rather than forward then down). Longer delivery strike (thrust kick - impact landing). Running style (less swaying of arms). Lean back - keeping weight on back footfor as long as possible.

Here is a video of today's session, I have dozens, but this one documents the change best.

Notice any difference?

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

I dont agree with keeping weight on backfoot for as long as possible- the idea is to power through the crease and not get stuck there.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

You can keep the upper body leant back whilst powering through with the legs. The upper body can then bend forward with greater force as the arm comes over. Although it looks like I am getting stuck on the crease, look at the delivery stride in slow motion and see that I have made a massive change to extend the delivery stride and fully transfer weight, resulting in a better follow through.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Bearing in mind that you are only changing little things; not bad. I know you are trying to control your arm swing but do relax your upper body.

Keep up the good work... both of you ;)

I will try that. Thanks for the encouragement. Hopefully, I'll have the complete action by Sunday. My brother certainly knows his stuff, I've been trying to convince him to go into cricket coaching, but he is reluctant. From here, I will be looking to speed the whole thing up to create more of an explosion at the crease. I am not sure what he has planned after then, but making me use my front arm is certainly up there.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

I had a net session today where I attempted to practice my brother's changes. To be honest, I could have implemented them a lot more, but it was my first bowl for a little while.

The main change which I did implement was getting more side on (and using the front arm) and it resulted in far better accuracy. Not a single ball went down the leg side and consequently, I got the batsman playing at 90% of deliveries and that was with almost every ball far outside off being left.

Although I didn't get any bowleds or LBWs, I did have batsman driving a lot on the up and I had one batsman inside edging the ball often. I'm not sure if I swung it today, I had a shined up ball and perhaps got it to shape a bit both ways (mostly away) but that may have just been the ball. I think that even the slightest shape is worth it (at the level I play) if you pitch it up.

I also had a nice variation which I added to my armory. I bend my back a lot and my natural wrist position makes it pitch up by exerting a lot of backspin. This ball keeps low and goes away from the right hander. Speaking of variations, I bowled a fair few handy slower balls, but although they always extract a 'well bowled' by the batsman, they have been mostly safely blocked. Perhaps they will be best for bowling at the death, or to a settled hitter.

Good session for me. I have a non cricket related problem though. Because I put my whole body into the delivery, my patka becomes loose and my hair falls to my forehead. Any tips (it doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense) to overcome this?

Sounds great.

Alice band?

Hijacking another topic :p

Tomorrow night, I have to bowl to the junior 'legend' no one wants to bowl to him, he is pure gun. So yeh, we have a 20/20 night on the turf wicket, and we have match-ups, and I have to bowl to him. Any advice?

Sounds good manee, looks like your doing awesome.

'Junior' so I guess he'd be comparitively short. Don't bowl short to him or wide because short people like to cut and pull. I recommend pitching it up at all costs.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

He's not THAT short, I said junior because he is in juniors, and so am I. His in u14s, but he could play u16s and he plays 4th sometimes. I just hope to swing it lots xD.

Oh yeh, and I have to face the fastest bowler when I'm batting. Great.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

I'd recommend not having a mid on in place. Assuming that he is a well coached player, he'd have a high front elbow which will prevent him from playing the on drive.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

He can play any shot he wants. :D

He got 50ish tonight, 55 last week, and onyl got out this week cos the ball rolled onto his stumps.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Good news, he only hit me for 2 2's and a single. Then I bowled to an u16 who had just hit 2 6s in a row and a massive fast bowler who can absolutely tonk the ball, and they only got about 4 off, all singles. So I'm happy.

Plus I hit a six.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

I'll talk about my Thursday and Sunday bowling tomorrow but I have a concern about my right shoulder. I played a straight drive to a short of a length ball from a medium pacer and felt my shoulder almost pop out (the first instinct was that I'd dislocated it). I was in immense pain for about 10s and I only feel what can be described as a very slight discomfort now. Is it worth going to the GP for or should I rest it for a few days first?

I've noticed that the shoulder is hanging slightly lower than the other but it might just be the way I stand.

I can bowl spin (didn't try pace) with no discomfort but keep in mind that it is my right shoulder.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Yes, go to the GP. You may have dislocated the shoulder and it may have popped back in. The pain you are feeling may be as a result of the ligaments being stretched.

Unfortunately, I cannot say for sure without seeing you and it is best to get it checked out to eliminate anything else, especially if your shoulder appears out of alignment.

I'm not even kidding, that is what I first though :) .

Will go and see the GP after school this week.
