Should Cricket be in the Olympics

Seeing as we have now had Ponting using his speech at the Bradman oratory to put his seal of approval on cricket at the Olympics, it's probably a good time for a debate on the matter.

For me, although I'd love to see it, I don't really think that it would be the right sport, simply because playing at the Olympics wouldn't be the pinnacle for most of the participants. The same goes for sports like Tennis and Football, which both have events which carry more prestige for the performer than a gold medal (Wimbledon and the world cup for example).

I can see that it would be a great way to open up the game to more people etc, but it does seem to be jumping on the bandwagon of sorts.

Also, would twenty/20 be the right format if it were to be included?

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

It won't help the sport at all, you won't see countries like the US playing it, and it'll just be another gold for Australia. The football and tennis are poor in the olympics, and I think the olympics should be amateurs, such as in the boxing, or just track and field events. I wouldn't really want to see Cricket at the olympics. Twenty20 would have to be the format used if it was put in though.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

I don't think it would be good because, like someone wrote, the Olympics just wouldn't be the pinnacle for players. Most would prefer (I assume) to win the Ashes, World Cup, or similar competitions.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

Personally I think T20 should be at the Olympics. They'd have to put in rules like the soccer ones (Where only 3 players over 23 are allowed). Maybe they could have it so each team could have only one player that has a Test cap or something. It mightn't be the pinnacle for some players, but the majority would be proud of the opportunity to represent their country in the Olympics - it would make a nice change from everything being about IPL money (though I'm sure someone stands to make a few bucks from this ::) )

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

I'd like to see it..

Read the other day that when India play Pakistan in a test series the first ball of the first test is seen by more viewers than the population of Western Europe..

So how ISN'T it in the Olympics when freakshows like synchronised swimming and baseball/softball are/were?

Bit harsh on the Sync swimmers ;)

I suppose before 2020 was popular there was no format suitable for cramming an international cricket event into a 2 week period. Plus there's the fact that there are so many countries that don't really play it (or at least are rarely seen on the international stage).

I guess one argument is that they are minority sports and deserve exposure. Funnily enough, I have less of an issue with sync swimming being in there than baseball etc.

One reason that cricket may get fast tracked through is down to the sheer numbers of people in Asian countries - something like a quarter of the total world population.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

I think it should be in and T20 would definitely be the way to go. If the game was amateurs only, or possibly limited by international caps as Ed suggested, it would really open the tournament up in terms of nations in with a chance of winning it. If they can have 50 odd different kinds of swimming then surely there's room for cricket.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

Yeh I don't get why there are loads of diffferent swimming events, I thought the point of a race was to get down there as quickly as possible, not who can do the best impression of a butterfly or a dolphin. You don't see the hundred metre backwards, crawling, sideways, freestyle, it's just get down there as quickly as you can. Diving's immense though.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

I reckon have Twenty 20 - although maybe make it so test nation can only have 4 players with over 15 ODI caps, so kinda like the soccer. So it would make it a bit more interesting. Best team with depth wins. Any fewer ODI players and people would lose interest.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

I reckon have a 20/20 tournament for the whole group stage and then for the final have a 4 day test match

I think you could get through all the group stages in 5-6 days with 2 games a day then play the main event for the rest of the event (with the same personel)

Sounds like a good compromise.. you have to be good enough to play the real thing for the gold medal

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

Having 20/20 in the Olympics will be a good platform to introduce Cricket to a much larger population.
I hope ICC will work on it.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

Cricket should be in the Olympics, would be a great gold for Pakistan. We don't get many outside of hockey.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

Would love to see cricket at the olympics but it just wouldn't have the support.

With only 10 full-time nations in the world it does not have the backing, especially with baseball knocked out and there are 25-30 counties playing that as a full-time national sport, it doesnt help the cause any.

I don't think it would be that easy for Australia to win gold- you only have to look at the last T20 World Cup- we didn't win that one! ;)

If baseball & softball can get a go, I don't see why T20 cricket couldn't.

That being said- I'm pretty sure that both baseball and softball have been dropped from the Olympic calendar in the London Olympics??

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

I would love to see it there but there are just not enough of the Olympic nations that play the game and it would not be succesfull.

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

I hope so. Bit hard with out the USA or China or other rich powerful nations being very good at it.

Twenty/20 would be a good one to have. We have a world cup for one dayers and tests go for too long to have too many teams. If baseball, softball & sync swimming are in it cricket should be. Lets hope there is an olympics in India soon, they will have to have cricket!

Re: Should Cricket be in the Olympics

We should definatly have a T20 compition in the next olympic. Also the next olympics are in England and they are a full time playing cricket country.
