The BaggyGreens Thread

Yeh we have been starved of pure cricket over the past two years. But the two Tests in Sri Lanka may be the only ones we play abroad this year due to a mass of white ball matches planned. The ICC and some of the stronger boards seems to be a in a sneaky conspiracy to slowly eliminate Test matches.

Some Aussies are taking advantage of unseasonal batting belters in England with Test discard Marcus Harris and world #1 Marnus Labuchagne posting centuries overnite. In one match the first innings scores have been 603 and 2/443.

The T20 World Cup is later this year so there'll be an emphasis on white ball cricket, particularly T20 games. I'd expect something similar next year with the 50 over World Cup towards the end of that year, less than 18 months away now.

The other main reason for it is money. White ball cricket, particularly the 50 over stuff brings in the dollars and that's what each cricket board wants more of.

I know money rules. Test cricket is for us dwindling purists.

Have finally seen some footage of the A boys innings. How impressive was Philippe's spin play with his precise footwork in lofting the Lankan tweakers. Not one slog sweep to cow corner but everything in the V to and over the boundary. Australian cricket has been crying out for this type of controlled aggression to counter sub continental spin since our last tour to Sri Lanka seven years ago. Take heed CA.

A 4for from our promising offie Todd Murphy has given the As a likely handy lead going into the third day. Matthew Kuhnemann offered good support but he will play no further part in the A campaign as he has been promoted to the ODIs.. as a like for like replacement for the injured Ashton Agar.

Our A boys are on track for victory, taking a solid 317 lead into the final day. Again it was Philippe leading the way along with Nic Maddinson. Inexplicably selectors have not replaced Kuhnemann. Surely Sangha has to come into our attack to partner Murphy for the final assault.

Are we all ready for a spin fest. Lankans picking three spinners while we Aussies will have only the two specialists in Lyon and Swepson, the latter on the skipper's urgings I am thinking. Been better sense to pick a like for like to the injured Ashton Agar.. say Holland or Kuhnemann imo. Feeling for Agar as he'd have made his Test return today..

Smith fuming as he trudges back to the pavillion after Usman sold him down the river. We can ill afford to run out possibly our best player of spin.

Future Tours Program next two years.

Well nothing has changed when it comes to Test matches. A piddling 17 over the two year WTC cycle while white ball again dominates the calendar. How hard is it to add a Test by removing a couple of 50 over or T20 games.

Start of another season of home based international cricket today with a three match Chappell/Hadlee trophy ODI series from sunny/wet Cairns. All this hype about an early start to the international calendar. Pity it is not Test cricket. When are they going to reduce or dump these tedious, predictable 50 over affairs..

Aussie were in diabolical trouble before Cameron Green and Alex Carey joined forces in a match winning partnership.

A three game clean sweep of the C/H trophy by the boys in garish yellow. It was the last ODI for long term Aussie captain Aaron Finch. Now lets have some red ball cricket.

Only about six more weeks before our Test boys head to the Old Dart for firstly the World Test Championship Final and the five game Ashes.

Australia Ashes squad: Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Matt Renshaw, Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitch Starc, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis.

Last chance saloon for Warner and Marsh imho. Harris with a poor @25 Test record recalled while Renshaw has been retained after a poor India series. But he was not the only one.

Where are you SomeblokecalledDave. SomeblokecalledDave. to give us your views on how the Ashes will pan out and whether the ECB is serious about giving Stokes use of so called 'bazball' pitches to induce quick scoring.

No idea mate, people have been commenting that this is probably the Ashes with the lowest profile given to the lead up to it. If this is Warner's last chance, he's scuppered mate - what with Broad having a new variation, he wont know if he's coming or going. I've not heard anyone say anything about the prep of the pitches to suit the 'Bazball' approach. As I said there seems to be very little in the way of a build up to it, the season over here for club cricket has got off to a really bad start - poor weather, most games called off, so I've not seen people to speak to them and on whatsapp my club seems to be obsessed with golf rather than the Ashes, so...? What I have heard id that there's a lot of blokes trying to come out of injury scenarios and from my own point of view - our fast bowlers don't seem to be a robust bunch seemingly pulling up with injuries after a handful of overs, so that must be concerning all involved?

Reasonably low key over here too mate. I suppose while the IPL is still running. There is also the World Champs final before the Ashes which is a big deal for us, as to go into the first Ashes Test as the official world Test champ will give our boys a big morale lift. We too have been hit by injury with our express bowler Lance Morris having to pull out. I was looking forward to him ruffling your blokes feathers.. specially Stokes. Our premier seamer Josh Hazlewood has also been under an injury cloud for some time.

Looked around today in the papers - nothing, the whole country is obsessed with soccer at the moment some big European cup or something?

Jofra Archer still battling his troublesome elbow has returned home early from IPL. Must now be in doubt for the Ashes. If Baz/Stokes adopt the quick scoring mode, we have the blokes to accommodate them. This week Marnus Labuchagne belted a quickfire 170 at Headingley, the venue for the Third Test.

England V Ireland Test match June 1-4: Lords Cricket Ground.

England Test squad :
Ben Stokes (c), James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope (vc), Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Outside of the new ball nothing in the Lords track for the pacemen, likely be the standard deck for the Ashes too so expect a summer bat fest. What has happened to the pure game. Still if it saves five day cricket from extinction we purists will have to cop it sweet.
