The Serious Discussion Thread.

Terry what was the situation like between both Irelands back then. Any animosity at the border.
Hi Craig, Ireland was quite peaceful in the sixties and after WWII.
Sadly the troubles kicked off again in the late sixties and escalated after that. That's why my family emigrated to Australia in 1970.
"My Dad was Orange and my Mum green, such a sight should never be seen."

What a fuss about a monetary supply bill in the US.
It's cetainly adversely affected the Australian stock markets and our dollar. I'm waiting for the come back on the stock exchange now the matter is settled, but not forgotten. The Bulls are in the China shop.
I'm not sure what Musk and Trump want?
Even Republican division.

And more talk of Tax cuts for the rich. Trickle down be blowed.
Especially unpopular if Trump's tarriffs cause inflation and make the poor poorer.

Werent the instigators green Irish living in orange Ireland that objected to British occupation. Skirmishes at first then bombing of certain London landmarks. Wherever the Brits went thru out history they'd bring trouble and conflict with them in their never ending quest for power. Only one nation to blame for the decades of death and destruction in orange Ireland.

Hi Thomas, a while back both you and I were talking about how we didn't read much fiction which got me thinking I should, so I did. It was a lovely gentle tale which I greatly enjoyed.

I must admit I haven't watched any of the Border line series. It sounds good.
In the sixties my parents would often drive over the border from Ulster to Southern Ireland to buy cheaper groceries.
Yes, we were. Fiction has its function, no doubt. It's a question of dosage, at least for me and of how it's written.

Do you actually feel more Irish or more Australian? Have you got dual citizenship?

I actually have triple citizenship Thomas: Irish, British and Australian.
I have affinity to all three nations but mostly Australian.
My youngest daughter had a choice of three passports when she went globe trotting. She decided on the Irish passport giving her greater ease of travel through the EU. Also, no one hates the Irish, and it was an inexpensive passport.🙂

It all started about 1690 When Protestant King William of Orange and King of England subdued Catholic Irish resistance at the battle of the Boyne. It was the biggest battle ever fought on Irish soil and every 12th of July the loyal Ulster British Protestants celebrate it with big marching bands and columns of marching men flying big banners. Sometimes they deliberately march through Catholic areas beating their big drums. As a naive child I liked the spectacle. 😛

The recent troubles kicked off in1969:
Some historians peg the real beginning of the Troubles to the events of August 1969, when a loyalist parade in Derry sparked three days of rioting and violent reprisals.
I was born in Derry, or Londonderry as some call it. I'm more Irish than English.

As for a subjugated race, the Irish were under the English heel for about 900 years.

So true. 🙂
You lucky guy, Terry. :thumbsu:It would reassure me tremendously if I had more than one passport.

I reckon Trump will keep supporting Israel and selling it Armsl
Lots of Arms from a populist president.

At least the dear preemptive president guaranteed to end the war in Ukraine in a day.✌ Jesus only walked on water, but he could also turn water into wine the colour of the Red Sea. 🍷

Crikey, the Trump Circus has stared early with his goons squabbling, especially Musk. Even presumptivey Trump n Co are making global fiscal tremors putting stock markets into a spin. The Aussie dollar is well down at $0.62 US dollars.
Our stock markets are slowly coming back which is nice, A lower Aussie dollar makes imports more expensive but at the same time it makes our exports more competitive and also encourages home grown industries .... It's not all doom n gloom.🙂

May we call you Joey. Are you a cricket tragic like me. You play perhaps like Cody over on the cricket threads. I see you found our 99.94 Club which has plenty more topics for you to take part in and enjoy.. 😊

Listening to the news about Trump's proposed edicts I find myself flabbergasted. He wants to either buy or take Greeland by force. He must be taking a leaf out of Putin's playbook? Europe and the Greenlanders rightly dismissed the idea out of hand.

He wants to take the Panama cannal too and rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. 🤣 Incredibly he also wants to take over Canada adding more States to the USA.

Naturally his ideas have been reacted to with derision.

"Move over Vlad, this is how it's done."

As if! All hot air from a stupid and greedy narrissisic despotic and felon, IMHO.

Even his bromancher Musk is preaching Facism to European leaders, especially Germany. What arrogance! He may be super rich but he's still the chief Twit.
