Re: Who replaces Hayden?

What about Marsh?. Thing that's working for him is that he's in the team making runs. Was out of form, now looking good. I think he will play a lot of test cricket for Australia

Why throw Hughes in the deep end and maybe scar him for life?

I'd prefer to see him eased in starting off with the one-day squad here in Australia, then if that works then, play him in a home test series first. Build up his confidence and knowledge at international level first methinks.

Jaques for me!

Jaques is injured. And why do people assume that being brought into the Test side early will somehow scar him? OK, when you're talking AFL or rugby or league or something like that, playing a player who is not physically developed enough can do damage. That's not a problem with cricket, as it's not a contact sport. And as for psychological damage, how many players can you name that have been psychologically damaged by playing too early?

Mental toughness is a good asset of the game ;)

I wasn't talking physically getting scarred you goose! ;)

I was talking getting mentally scarred. Are you telling me that picking a 20 year old on a foreign tour where he could get 6 quackers in a row from an unplayable Steyn on a South African greentop would do nothing to his confidence?

Thats why I'd rather have him brought in gently on pitches & grounds he's played on, and let him get used to international cricket here first, and bring him on gently, rather than throw him in the deep end.

If they do pick him and he goes off with a century on debut and averaging 60 at series end- then all credit to him- but I wouldn't risk it.

Jaques may be rusty- but we're talking about a guy who hit a hundred in his last test, averages 47 in 11 test matches- if he gets fit- which he should- then he will get picked.

Of course you weren't talking about physical scarring. Read my post again. I referred to psychological damage as well. I mentioned the physical aspect of it because it is the closest analogue to the problems associated with bringing a young player in before they're ready in AFL, rugby or other contact sports. I mentioned that because there was no other leg to stand on in terms of not playing young players, and in cricket even that doesn't matter.

As I said in regards to the psychological aspect, plenty of players are brought in from a young age, don't do all that well initially, but then hit their straps and are fine. Ishant Sharma didn't have a groundbreaking first couple of Tests. Matthew Hayden failed numerous times early, being dropped for long periods. Damaged him for life, didn't it?

What's the worst that could happen to Hughes? You pick him to open. He fails twice. You drop him for Rogers. The bloke is 20. He'd be stoked to have gotten a game at all. He'll stick around for the tour, go back to state cricket, and keep piling on the runs until the selectors pick him again.

I really don't see why we have this obsession with waiting until players are "psychologically ready". Hughes debuting at 20 might be young by Aussie standards, but if you look at other teams around the world, they have players debuting at 18 and 19 all the time. Tendulkar debuted at 16 FFS!

And why mention Jaques? The bloke is injured. If he was fit, yes, I'd agree with you, but he just had a set back to his back recovery and there is a good chance he won't get up in time for the SA tour.

Re: Who replaces Hayden?

They should take hughes and marsh to south africa, play them both in a tour game and pick the one who plays the best.

whilst jaques has a great record it is time for australia to blood some youth

Re: Who replaces Hayden?

Phill Hughes has just made 151 at a good strike rate of 60. If he doesn't make the side then the selectors should be committed to an asylum.

Jaques made 9 and will need a lot of runs under his belt. Just because he is playing doesn't mean he's recovered, he will take some time to get a positive comfortable feel for the game again.

There is no doubt now Hughes is the man.

Agreed entirely.

This kid is posting extremely impressive numbers. Selectors must be on drugs if they don't select him.

I agree here. I like that idea, alot.

Re: Who replaces Hayden?

Hughes following up in the second innings with an unbeaten 82 at stumps, after his 151 in the first innings. The kid really knows how to play under pressure. I reckon he'll thrive at Test level.

He's won me over!

If they don't select him while he's IN form- they're kidding themselves! ;)

Re: Who replaces Hayden?

Hughes 82 not out to follow up his big 100. He's a definate. So Marsh is injured and why arent we rushing him into the one day side? Are the selectors insane?

No, the selectors want to win, and Hughes is not nearly as good at OD cricket as he is at first class cricket. He only averages 36.21 in ODD cricket (30 this season). Strangely enough, he averages 62.66 in 20/20. He likes his games either very long, or very short!

Re: Who replaces Hayden?

Not Warner. The experiment has been tried and it has failed HORRIBLY.

Get him out and bring in a proven first class cricketer Hodge, Rogers, Kilinger, Carsledine.....etc
