Wicketkeeping Assistance

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

One thing i would reccomend on is really work on standing up to the stumps, thats what can make an average keeper a good keeper, it's handy due to the fact the amount of pressure it creates is enourmous.

There are a few drills for this-

1- Get a partner and a offstump,

The partner has a tennis racket and a ball and he skims the ball off the surface where you take the ball, up to the stumps this is, the idea of this is to just increase your glove speed, also by using a tennis ball it forces you to have some give when you take the ball.

Also you can work on your takes down the legside by standing your kitbag up infront of the stumps and get a feeder to throw random balls to you, mixing them down off and leg, when taking down leg work on the gloves going first so you have a lnog sight of the ball and then the feet following, thats what i was taught anyway.

good luck

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

Standing up to the stumps is not about glove speed so to speak. I'd say following the line of the ball and having the 3 dimensional body movement to take the ball smoothly and comfortably. The worst thing you can do standing up is Snatch at the ball ! oh and close your eyes!

Alot of standing up involves confidence! if in doubt wear a lid!

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

If your standing up on a flat track with the ball not doing anything then yes glovework is not needed but when the ball is swinging and the pitch is worn then surely you would need some glove speed yes?

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

speed or work?

you should in theory be trying to get your body and head in line with the ball or where you intend to take the ball?

its very hard to explain as i'm sure most wicket keepers will say its down to reactions!

but it helps if you roughly in the position in the first place!

i find myself being to quick on the ball and sometimes have to tell myself to slow down rather than snatch at the ball.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

Yeh, I would of thought the faster you go at the ball the more you would snatch at it unless your have a good technique.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

well again really you have no need to go to the ball your hands should move sideways and backwards?

the most difficult balls i find are the ones where you are standing up and it gets extra bounce making the take an awkward hight! But they ar ethe most rewarding as well!

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

go onto youtube a type in "masterclass wiketkeeping".
Ian Heely shows the way to wiketkeep. good video

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

I am a 6ft2 keeper and have never really found it a problem - however when I lose confidence (which we all do now and again) I come out of the crouch too fast meaning the ball hits my fingers or doesnt go in the meaty bit! Keep as low for as long as you can.

When practicing diving - its the roll that is the important bit so you dont drop the ball. Use a crash mat in training and keep the elbow you are diving on in close to your body.

This is simple but the best advice I can give you! keep your eye on the ball. The amount of stumpings I have missed because you know its coming and you watch the batsmens feet. Also when they are having a swing make sure you tell yourself to watch the ball and not the bat...

Good Luck

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

its hard to offer advice untill you have experienced it. but alot of wicket keeping is just hand to eye co-ordination..... ive seen alot off tall wicket keepers use different stances, that dont really envolve crouching as such more bent knees with hands down to the ground........ But traditionally wicket keepers are short!!! having said that i'm 5.10 so not small but not tall!

cant say i prcatice diving as it tends to be instinctive..... had my fair share yesterday with a dukes ball swinging a country mile down leg all day!

to avoid stumpings you just have to assume every ball is going to come to you! no matter what!

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

The biggest thing with stumpings is that a lot of keepers tend to move backwards when taking the ball, meaning they have to move forwards in order to reach the stumps, which of course takes time.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

I tend to step across and forward! harder when your going down the leg side away from the stumps!

Thanks guys!!! Any more advice or tips? I have a question though, I know that you are supposed to move with powerful sideways movements(skipping), and I practice that and have good technique BUT what about diving? Is there any specific technique? How exactly do you do it? I am asking because I dont really want to get injured due to poor technique.
quite frankly its really hard to get hurt when diving. the best way to do it is by just diving sideways towards the ball. now i knw this is going against technique but it always worken for me, try catching the ball in the net of the glove when diving and not palming it cause for me atleast, it sticks. another thing is, if your on fast bowers, then try collecting the bal on yrou left so dont stand directly behind hte stups so if there is an edge, you wont have to move too much.
