Australia in India

Re: Australia in India

Smart decision to not enforce the follow on. Australia really have a lot to do and I am not sure if we will be able to. The whole batting line up needs to fire but its the bowlers that have to step up first.

bring on the day's play

Re: Australia in India

Siddle gets the first breakthrough of the day, Sehwag tries to bludgeon this through the off-side but only gives Haddin an easy catch.

1/182, Sehwag gone for 90 with Gambhir on 86. Dhoni is the new man in as India look for quick runs.

Johnson had Sehwag caught behind a couple of overs ago but umpire Rauf gave him the benefit of the doubt despite the edge looking obvious.

Today is also Sehwag's 30th birthday.

Time for them to retire that old ************** Hayden

Hmmm, benefit of the doubt at this stage, hasn't batted for a while before this series so still trying to find his feet. He'll need a big score when Australia bat again in this game or in the third test otherwise the pressure will build.

That backfired badly :p

Yep. ;)

He is a huge liability in the field as well and at his age he aint ever going to get better, most slips fielders in the world would have held onto that chance earlier especially as it went straight into the hand

But if they send for a replacement for Jaques then he is in trouble, shouldnt be given a chance to make runs when the series is lost

Hayden has credits in the bank at this point, he has been a wonderful player for Australia over the years and he'll need more than a couple of bad innings to be in danger of getting the chop. I don't think he'll get dropped in the series regardless of how he goes for the rest of the tour. With Australia having lost one of their specialist openers, I can't see the selectors dropping another one as it it would leave the openers exposed with Katich and potentially another inexperienced player opening. Australia may go the other way and choose not to bring a replacement player over which would mean that Hayden would stay in the side.

I suspect Hayden will be given part of the summer to make runs. Australia plays New Zealand in a two-test series starting in November, if he doesn't make runs then, his place would be in serious question.

Re: Australia in India

From an England point of view that would be great as anyone can make runs against the Kiwis :p

But I feel the Aussies need to make the tough call as they have 3 tough series following the Kiwis visit, cant select players on how they perform against the worst side in the world after failing against decent opposition?

Maybe offer him what Healy didnt get, a farewell at the GABBA

Re: Australia in India

White get another spell and gets Gambhir again, just like Ganguly on day 1, 50 runs between chances

No doubt he will be the scapegoat for the loss, but he has created chances

Re: Australia in India

Aussies are getting a reality check. That's all it is. They are getting beaten by the Indians, yeah, the ball, the pitch and the fielding and batting are better by the Indians.
The fact that the Aussies have gone with a team of no names. Good on them. It might just work for them.
It won't this series. It could in Australia against NZ.

To be honest I think that Haydos needs to retire. He's the same age as Kumble.
They should try Shane Watson at the top of the order. He and Katich would probably do better.

Re: Australia in India

Australia are 0/38 off 6 overs.

Hayden and Katich smashing it. Katich with a decent strike rate? My god!

Edit: Make that 0/46 off 6.3

Re: Australia in India

Hayden going for everything at the moment, trying to smash his way into some form and it seems to be working. Australia are 0/49 from seven overs, Hayden has 29 and Katich is on 20.

India declared at 3/314, setting a target of 516 runs. Gambhir was out just before lunch to Cam White for 104 and Brett Lee picked up Ganguly before Dhoni closed the innings. Dhoni himself scored 68 nout and Sachin Tendulkar was undefeated on 10.

Australia's highest successful chase ever was 3/404 against England in 1948.

Edit: Hayden out for 29, LBW to Harbhajan Singh.

Re: Australia in India

Big trouble now - no chance of an Australia win, and I don't think it's possible for them to survive 4 sessions with 6 wickets after losing the first 4 so quickly!

Hey I agree with you. I believe that we are going to lose the series because our team isn't as strong as it use to be. Yes we are missing McGrath, Warne, Langer, Martyn, etc. But we can't be with those guys all the time. It's the same with the poms (your mob) Michael Vaughan couldn't go on and keep on playing.
It is a huge reality check for the team. They have never gone through losing a series for ages.

MY MOB!! Nope, my mob (Ireland) are in the final of the Intercontinental Cup at the end of the month :p When it comes to test cricket I'm just a very interested neutral. I am up for Australia in this series as I love their aggressive style and self-belief. There was a while there when, even though they were losing big names, there was no shortage of talent coming to replace them. This should still be the case - I'd say they just need some time for the new guys to make their own place in the team - which is difficult with the pressure of the big names of the past on their shoulders.

Watson out now too ...

Sorry I thought you were a pom.

Re: Australia in India

Had a look at the scorecard when I came into work this morning - didn't make good reading! Anyone watching it? Did Australia give up or were they out-bowled?

Completely outplayed. Pretty inept effort on day five, Haddin, White and Lee were all back in the shed pretty quickly until Johnson and gave up the Indians some resistence but it was only a matter of time.

Australia all out for 195, Clarke top scored with 69, Haddin made 37 with Johnson providing some mini resistence for a period there with 26.

Zaheer went through Australia early on day five, taking three wickets to effectively ending Australia's chances of trying for a draw. Mishra picked up the final two wickets to finish up with seven for the game in a great debut. MS Dhoni was ajudged Man of the Match for his two half centuries.

So, India take a 1-0 lead in the series after a big victory at Mohali. The third test gets underway in Delhi on the 29th.
