Australia in South Africa

Re: Australia in South Africa

it would be a huge effort from our tail if we can make them bat again, fingers crossed. 99 run partnership from mcdonald and mitch and growing.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Well for all you McDonald haters he has finally shown something with the bat.

52 from 57 with 8 fours mixed in.

Johnson also gets to yet another test 50, I really am amazed at how good he can be with the bat.

52 from 51 with 7 fours and a six.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Johnson and McDonald running rampant at the moment, 6/345, this partnership is worth 127 from 19.5 overs. Johnson is 71 not out, McDonald 60.

Australia trail by 97 runs. A tad more than 17 overs are left today with at least 45 mins of play left.

Re: Australia in South Africa

McDonald is caught at bad pad off Harris but instantly asks for a referral. The ball clearly shows the ball hitting the pad but is inconclusive towards whether it touched the glove or not.

7/381, McDonald out for 68, Johnson on 95.

Edit: Siddle out exactly the same way first ball, no doubt this time, 8/381.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Century for Johnson, another short ball from Steyn and Johnson gives him the treatment, launching him for six over midwicket. What an innings from Johnson, came out with Australia still well behind and has played probably his best innings to date.

8/387, Johnson on 101, McGain with him on zero. Deficit is only 55 now.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Uh-oh. Johnson drives off his backfoot, the first run is no problem but in trying to get the strike back, McGain is run out for a duck.

9/390. Johnson 102, Hilfenhaus is the last man in.

Re: Australia in South Africa

And that's the game, Hilfenhaus tries to emulate a pull shot he played earlier in the over off Harris but he finds the edge which goes straight to Ashwell Prince at first slip.

The Hilf is out for 12, Australia are all out for 422 and South Africa win by an innings and 19 runs. Paul Harris finishes with 6/127, a fair effort in the end and he brings his match total to nine wickets. Johnson remains 123 not out, quite a remarkable innings which only took 103 balls and included 11 fours and five sixes. I reckon Australia have found their all-rounder and he has been under their noses all this time. Johnson's average is now 34.70 and he has a test century to his name, well done.

Anyway, South Africa were too good for Australia in this game, Australia's first innings with the bat was terrible with only a handful of players applying themselves with the bat and a score of 209 was never going to be enough. South Africa then rubbed it in with the willow with three players scoring centuries and a lack of application by the Australian bowlers saw them take some punishment, in particular McGain who was shown no mercy by the Proteas.

In the end, the deficit was too much and despite some staunch resistence by McDonald and Johnson at the end, South Africa were too good. This is Australia's first loss by an innings for 11 years, the last time that happened was against India in 1998.

Australia still win the series 2-1 though and the summer is tied 3-3 between the two sides which is a fair reflection of how the last six tests have gone. Australia retain the number one ranking and have showed that their is certainly some depth in their ranks with the likes of Hughes and Siddle stepping up to the plate. Johnson has showed he is going to be a super player in the future. South Africa have showed they've got the goods and came close to getting that number one ranking. Steyn has played well but it's been the batters who have done the damage over the last few months. Smith, Kallis, Amla, Duminy, de Villiers and even Boucher have shown they have a super top order, and one which has proven tough to remove. The tail's chipped in on occasions with Steyn, the Morkels and Harris showing they can hold a bat.

Paul Harris is Man of the Match for his nine wickets, he also scored 27 with the bat in South Africa's only innings. Can you believe Harris is the first South African to take five wickets in an innings on South African soil for 45 years? I can't.

Mitch Johnson is Man of the Series. He was the equal leading wicket-taker for the series with Dale Steyn and he scored 255 runs at an average of 85, the fifth highest scorer for the series. He's had quite the series.

Anyway, that's the end of the test series. South Africa and Australia now play each other in two Twenty20 matches taking place this weekend and then it's five one-day games. Should be some more cracking games in there.

I don't want to say I told you so. ;)
I did spot that- and well done! ;)

I'm not one to usually rag on any players performances, but lets have a look at McGain's test figures!

batting: 2 & 0 for an average of 1.
bowling: 18 overs 2 maidens 149 runs 0 wickets 8.27 economy rate

Although I will give him this- its unlucky he didn't ge to bowl in a second South African innings, as if Harris can take 6, McGain could've at least got 1 or 2 wickets! ;)

solid figures

Re: Australia in South Africa

Shocking performance, Australia fail to get a decent score with Dusseys 88* being the only decent contribution and then he rips the South Africans apart with the ball only for their sloggers down the order to smash them to the mediocre total

Re: Australia in South Africa

Ahhh we are failing bad!!!

I am not very optimistic for the ODIs :(

Does anybody else here feel that this series has been the complete reversal of the series in Australia?

Re: Australia in South Africa

Australias senior batsmen are either in shit form or cant play T20 cricket, would have liked to see have seen more of Ferguson and North and less Clarke, Hussey and Ponting

Anyway was great to see Harwood bounce back and hopefully earn another shot in the future
