Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

I'll sort of echo Jimmy's question Josh. How are the boys feeling down at Point with such a young brigade performing above all expectations? I like the look of Trav Whittle with his leggies, that kid can play. Along with yourself, Swardsy and Moorey (apologies to the other blokes I've left out there too) it seems you blokes have a very bright future if not this year in the years to come.

ok here's a new topic. What are people's thoughts on paid players in the BCA?
Should players be required to coach or be qualified as a level 1 coach as the rules state or should clubs be able throw some cash at any players to lure them from other clubs/assocaitions ??

shouldnt be any rule ... should be a club decision. If they are able to raise enough funds to pay a player and perhaps upset other players that arent getting paid, then so be it.

most definately not
this years competition is so good because the teams are so equal and who would of thought that no-one is going to know who will be in the finals until after the last round.

If we were able to buy players this would destroy our competition, would put clubs with no money like coronet straight back down the bottom again.

I think our competition is getting better as clubs with no money are still able to compete and give top teams a half decent run.

not sure that many clubs are in a position to splurge on a number of players. Would assume we are talking one or two for any team at most. Wouldnt it improve our competition by having better players running around. My understanding is that money is not an issue for Coronet.

just by having better players in the top sides doesnt make it better for the competition in general?

who is going to want to play in ballarat cricket where there is 4 teams who have bought players, and before round 1 we will already know the top 4 who will make the finals, people arent going to want to play

wouldnt it be a better competition by having all bar 1 or 2 sides in the hunt to make finals each year.

Yeah your right Waka, alot of quality young players coming through...not only in the firsts but all through the grades which is good to see!

Trav does look quite good, he will develop into a very good bowler over the next few years.

I would'nt say its above expectations from our (Golden Point) point of view, we always knew what we had it was just other people around the assoiciation not knowing what players we had coming through......

I think the BCA is better for not haviing alot of money involved. Its probably why Ballarat can support so many clubs. In football there are many players who goto clubs for cash and that's probably why there are so many players playing in country leagues like the chFL & LPFl when the would play BFL if they weren't being paid.

I think Ballarat cricket is fine the way it is, although if clubs want to pay players privatey nobody can stop that. It would definitly benefit the teams who have got more money than others though.

Do you not think "paying" players doesnt happen already? .... I'm sure sides have recruited players with the promise of no subs, or some free gear etc. Is this not "payment"?. Dont think any club can afford huge payments... or can they? .. As I said before, we're not talking about half the side here, just perhaps one. And as we see so often, one good player doesnt make a good side.

Surely having better players around clubs makes it a better competition, especially seeing a lot of clubs have so many good young players getting about.

Must admit, I wouldnt want to play in a side when someone is being paid and I'm performing better ... not sure it fosters a good club environment, hence my point about it being a club decision.

Wouldnt surprise me if there were guys being paid to play this season... and its one of our most competitive

I agree Napisan. I don't believe in our level of cricket anybody should be paid to play. When money is involved loyalty is thrown out the window. Take my old mate Bam Bam for instance. We paid him to come across and "Coach" our club, after season one he told us he would play for nothing as he'd never had so much fun playing cricket and would play the rest of his career with us. Three years down the track the lure of cash was too much. We lost a quality player because another club threw the green his way.
Paying a coach is totally different, that's a job which should have targets and goals to reach. If you happen to jag a coach that can play aswell (Kelton, Bambury, Steenholdt etc) then that's just a bonus.

Rumour has it your mate will be a surprise selection for the combine come this Thursday night, after some trouble at Lara.

Can you confirm or deny, Waka?

I think is should be ok to pay coaches. If they do there job right, they will have to sacrifice alot of time maintaining all the teams as well as running training etc. As for other players getting paid, i dont think it will ever happen. Compared to football clubs, cricket teams do not bring half as much as footy clubs do. for one supporters dont have to pay to watch there team play where as to football the price is about 7 bucks to enter. I dont think clubs dont pay players cause they dont want to, its because they cant afford to.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

coaches yes, players no

and having subs paid for isn't really getting 'paid' as i would see it

a club paying a players subs isn't going to attract someone from out of town

Usually you would give paying no subs as an incentive to get involved in coaching Juniours.@| . after all the more we put into the young ones, the better the future of the club
