Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

The BCA treats the team like the Mighty Ducks, they give you a couple of newspapers to strap to your legs and tell you to get out there and do it for Ballarat. Its just not good enough.
It doesnt matter how much blokes love playing cricket, there comes a point where financial and life/family commitments take precedent. I agree with Potsy- if they actually pay blokes to go it gives them one less reason to say no (maybe a big enough reason to say yes).
I dont think any of these problems should reflect badly on Dash or Hammer, from what I understand they are doing the best with what they have been dealt in both the player and resource departments. I have a lot of respect for both of them for trying to follow in Emilio Estevez's footsteps.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

I agree fully with everyones thoughts about what support or lack of it that the bca put into the country week set up. I think that dash and hammer have limited resources to work with but don't you think that the pride of playing for your town has gone out of it a little, with blokes getting rep caps willy nilly? Surely there has to be some professionalism brought back into it and some ind of structure set up to make sure that the bca are a competitive force for years to come. At some point someone has to take stock and say that it isn't good enough to just be fielding sides with 3 or 4 of the best in it. Sure the bca could do more to support the process in different ways such as financial reward and staying in town rather than travelling but you have a look at other associations and they are kitted out completely with playing shirts, shorts, warm up tops, vests the whole lot. All this surely would take is a couple of sponsors to jump on board. It cant be that hard to drum up a few local sponsors for the city's best cricketers to go away and flaunt the buissness name on a top or something like that????????

Totally agree Thickedge. The bendigo boys if anything looked like a professional team out there on Sunday, in uniform and warming up before half of our blokes got to the ground. Hence the reason they smashed us. It's not good enough that the BCA complain about performances and worry about getting relegated when they're not prepared to bring back a bit of pride for your city. Support the blokes who put themselves out there. I agree with the caps, I have one but certainly don't deserve one.
It wouldn't take much for the BCA to get out there using their contacts or searching for a few local businesses to jump on board and hook the team up to at least LOOK professional and worthy opponents. I'll bet the Bendigo boys had a chuckle to themselves while they were warming up watching us boys standing around like stunned mullets in awe of their enthusiasm for just being there.
Dash was telling me that most other teams have an entourage that goes with the team for the week, physio's, team managers etc, but all we have is a dodgy driver and old Al Spratling for the drinks. Don't get me wrong those blokes do a good job and I have a lot of time for them but we pale in comparison by the sounds.

Who is this Josh White bloke. You have been in the BCA one minute and have a couple of good innings. Awesome pal, you rock

He played with us before he went to Geelong.

If you've got kids and a cricket widow it's too hard. I know Mrs. O was not too keen on me playing 3 Saturday/Sundays in 4 weeks when I got the call last Wednesday from a clearly under the pump Pete Huntley. And I reckon my two young tin lids wouldn't have been happy either.

And how are you Irv? England treat you well? Catch you for a beer and dart soon.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

as much as people bag paull jeffrey, when he was capt of the country week team things were a lot more organized on and off the field. since he has gone things seem to be going backwards. im not bagging fletch or jonesy etc but he seemed to get what he wanted most of the time.maybe the coaches/captain dont put enough pressure on the bca to provide the right things the team needs to succeed in melb. strev parker and dipper were coaches for 1 season and they both quit after that so maybe there fighting a lost cause. i know dipper had to even pay for his own fuel back and forth for the week.. there just cost cutting whenever they can,but 4 what.. they treat the money in the bca bank account like its their own..start spending some money to improve the standard eg sightscreens for a start...

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

having had the chance to play country week and rep games under parks and dipper as well as hammer and dash its clear to see that no fault lies in part with them. They all put in a lot of time, effort and research in order to do the best that they can for the blokes who make their time available. i also respect those who are unavailable for the commitments of playin during the week. once you consider that its plain to see where the fault in all this lies...The BCA lets the players and public down in so many ways..

Not only in the country week/rep side of it but in many other areas as well. Events that could be create a source of income for the bca in order to fund things like country week tend to fall by the wayside because it takes a little bit of effort. I know its revisiting an older issue but the 2020 cricket event could have been a good chance to make a little money whether it was selling drinks and food, and other things along these lines. A little advertising at times would go a long way...sorry to rant on boys

We're hearing you mate, what's to stop the BCA funking it up a bit and having a night series 20/20? I understand that only the Northern Oval would be suitable for night cricket but wouldn't that liven things up a bit and generate a crowd and revenue? The Alfredton Sports club is very close to getting sufficient lighting for night games at Alfredton and I can tell ya'll now that when it happens I'll be organising something to funk things up a bit. A Friday night 20/20 series might be something to look at instead of the Tuesday night stuff, have it a bit earlier on in the year to get us all going? Just a thought and I'm sure we all have many more ideas floating around.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Ok boys, here's what I'll do to make myself slightly more useful than the electronic punching bag that I usually am on this thing. I need opinions on what is wrong with anything in our competition, and more importantly suggestions on how to fix it. From Country week to regular day matches, special competitions to awards and everything in between.

What I'll do is collate all relevant and valid suggestions and put a proposal together to submit to the BCA. I get along pretty well with Ron Jennings and will go through him away from the rest of the BCA board for starters. He's a stubborn old prick but I know he wants the best for Ballarat cricket and as long as this proposal is taken to him with a "Lets work together on this" attitude, not a "I'm a unionist let's strike until we get our way" attitude then I think we can get somewhere.

I reckon we are all in the same boat here wanting things to change to benefit everyone involved and if it takes someone like me to do something about it then so be it. Feel free to post suggestions and solutions in the forum or a personal message, I'll work for all of us to get the best result for US, the blokes that make the BCA.

That would be quite possibly the most intelligent idea anyone on this forum has posted. top work waka!! And i would totally be behind ya suggestion before for a night 2020 especially a friday. there would be a lot of revenue there to be made and would certainly help the standing of cricket in ballarat. I dont know bout other blokes but i find it a little embarrassing at times when i check out the courier and find out two pages on cricket compared to the 10 that you find on footy during footy season. I mean there are just as many if not more blokes involved with cricket yet nobody seems to show any interest in it. I believe that one of the most important things for ballarat cricket is to raise its profile a little. Get the 2020 night happenin, advertise it, sell a heap of crap, get as many teams as possible to participate, organise it well in advance and let clubs know months before it happens and keep on their backs...and so on...

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Greg, I'm pretty sure that there are leagues around that even have 20/20 matches for premiership points. I'm not sure if that's feasible in the BCA but something like that where you may play two teams in a day would certainly be of more interest to the public and would solve issues like having to play those ridiculous Saturday/Sunday games that make it so hard to field teams in the lower grades these days.

Sven

P.S. Worked our bowling machine up from 70mph to 100mph to Josh White in our nets on Tuesday night. They were half volleys and his heart was pumping out of his chest but he was playing cover drives. The rest of us got to 85mph and were struggling. He is a freak.

Interesting posts on the forum as late. Cape isnt going anywhere at Darley. He stuffed up, did his time in the 2nd XI and will be back better for the mighty lions.

I know for a fact the BCA is the richest and most financial association in all of Vic Country cricket. Make of that as you will.

Representative cricket will see some changes next year!!! Heard a few rumours floating around.
Speaking to Capey at training Tuesday night he cant justify spending 3 weeks playing cricket Vic Country & Country week and basically wasting his holidays for the year. That is why he doesnt play and i am sure there are other blokes who have other similar circumstances. All would love to represent the BCA but something has to give.

The only changes i would add to the league as it isnt as bad as you all make out.

play a one dayer and a two dayer against each side.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

The lion show you obviously aren't that up to date at darley these days as cape has had meetings with at least 4 ballarat clubs i know of and yes thats right money does talk. All it will take for cape to leave I hear is a coaching role and some $$$$$. If he leaves it will be the end for the darley lions.....
