Only if you have nothing better to do, like watching paint dry or sticking pins in your eyes. Both of those options are as much fun as going down to look at the grass

Or you could go and watch the mighty darley devils play redan on the green grass of the city oval.

The only reason the City Oval looks good at the moment is because Redan have only just been allowed back on it for training in the last 2 weeks and played their first game on it last weekend. Last year at the same time it was in a similar state and just become shizen again once it started to get used. Fair chane it will end up in the same state again if the weather continues on like it has been for the last few years.
Yeah I realise that mate. We were on the topic of grounds and thought that those who are used to playing cricket on the city oval needed to know that it is back in use again for the footy. Let's hope that it doesn't get too chopped up like it did last year. @|

Sebas's ground isn't too bad either. I had a look at it the other week. Buninyong's is awesome as usual. I was out there over the weekend umpiring the buninyong vs dunnstown game. Ground was in good shape. @|

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

My apologies if this subject has been bought up before but trawling thru 226 pages is a bit tiresome.:(

My subject is: Umpiring. Not the umpires we pay for but the players who umpire the games. I am constantly frustrated by the total lack of knowledge about rules, signals, etc. Now as you can see by my name I play in the lower grades so those in this thread who do play in the lower grades you will know what I mean.

It seems pretty obvious that we probably won't go back to the number of umpires we had years ago so perhaps the BCA should be looking at educating each captain and vice-captain and say one other regular in each team from 3rds downwards in the "arts" of umpiring. It does not have to go into too much depth just teach the basics so we get some consistancy in decisions (and I should add a little bit more fairness!!!)

Of course perhaps the clubs need to be pro-active in this too.

Any thoughts?

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Having played in the lower grades for a little while I quickly learnt that the longer you bat, the less time you spend umpiring !

I know it constantly comes up as an issue with our guys since our lower grades can often have a lot of kids, and it puts a lot of pressure on the senior guys to umpire, score, babysit and then perhaps think about their own game (but only if there's time left over !).

Personally I think it really reinforces the spirit of cricket in that you should walk when you know you're out, so that you don't force your mate to give you out. And no LB (for either side) unless its going under middle. A lot of respect is won and lost when you umpire yourselves.

I would've thought that anyone playing the game should have a reasonable grasp on the rules already, without the need for a BCA seminar.

This idea definetly has some merit.

I worked at the Ballarat Basketball for a few years and was responsible for implementing a club refereeing system where each club / team were responsible for providing a referee for one game each week. The system required them to have a training session a few times per season to brush up knowledge and understanding. Some teams provided a player or others found past referees to be their designated referee. The good thing was that they were never left to umpire on their own and had a fully qualified referee with them. Teams that failed to provide a referee for that week lost points. They were paid for their role as well!!

The obvious difference here is that cricket goes for 5 hours not 50 minutes so the time thing becomes a big issue. I do think some responsibilty should be put back on clubs to either provide one or two umpires each week. Those clubs with large playing ranks and have people miss out on games occasionally may be able to encourage these players to be umpires (But if they are missing out on a game in the fifths then maybe their knowledge on the game is limited). Or clubs can pursue players who have retired to be their club designated umpire.

If a system such as the above isnt implemented then at least it should be the clubs obligation to teach its players the rules of cricket. It would not only benefit the clubs and players when they are required to umpire, but surely it would avoid the issues that arise through lack of understanding of the rules that makes people turn away from umpiring not only in cricket but in a lot of sports!!!!

I also think that it comes back to the players to be more tolerant of decisions. Not many umpires deliberately make a wrong decision, just as we dont mean to play bad shots, drop catches and bowl crap. They should be allowed mistakes, they are only human!! (well that is sometimes debatable) We pay them jack all to stand out there all day in the sun to allow us to play the game. Look at the elite umpires they get paid a hell of a lot more and they still make a lot of mistakes, so I think a lot of blokes have to get real and be more realistic in their expectations of the umpires whether paid or not. Also most umpires arent doing it for the money they do it for the love of the game, putting time back into the game they once played and giving up their time. If you were constantly questioned, abused and tormented would you continue to play, or umpire?

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

The club i played for in england had the same thing. Had to recruit an umpire for each grade and they would do it each week for teh whole season.

Worked really well and although there were some favourable decision it never affected the result of the game. Some of the umpires had been doing it for 20 years plus.

Never played in the lower grades but it would be hard playing and umpiring in the same game.

Just on the umpires and people abusing them when in lower grades, probably not the best idea because you might have a reasonably new umpire that could be doing his / her first game and they make an error. Only to find that the guys who are playing the game go off at the umpire causing them to go off the field and never return. Also I think some of you really need to know that if you have heard of Ugly Parent Syndrome, you guys are going to need to put a stop to it as it can affect players, umpires and even some other officials. It always happens in the juniors during the footy season all because the parents want the best for their kids. Fair enough but you just have to make sure that you don't go too far.
In the footy season we have had plenty of umpires leave due to the abuse from parents and the like. So it's probably best just to sit back and not worry about the umpires all the time.
I know what it's like to be abused. It's not a really nice feeling. You don't want it and don't need it. So it's probably best if you don't abuse the umpires when playing. Just follow your skipper's instructions and you will be ok.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Getting back onto the grounds situation I noticed that the North Ballarat City game against Melton has been transferred over to the city oval. I have got the reserves. I think that the reasoning was because of Sunday's game North ballarat vs Sandringham is going to be played at Austar Arena.
Hey Razza,

Is the ground so badly cut up because of the footy or is it being re-sewn?
