Re: CMCA- Ommies to remain in top grade

Oh, Lazza. Why, oh why?

Hearing last night that Stan Lazaridis had tested positive for a banned substance, I had to sit down with a mug of Horlicks and calm my nerves. Stan Lazaridis? The guy is so nice he makes Hi-5 look like Cannibal Corpse. Surely there was a mistake. Stan the Man? Busted?

The mail in this morning from the club is that the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) tested the former Socceroos winger in November 2006, and he came up positive for a medicine used to treat spot baldness or alopecia areata. It contains the antiandrogen finasteride, which has been used to mask steroid use and falls into the “No-No” column in the FFA’s Anti-Doping Policy code and the World Anti-Doping Authority’s banned list of substances. It has been on it since 2005.

According to the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery website, finasteride masks the group of steroids known as “anabolic androgenic steroids, which includes the ‘male hormone’ testosterone. Finasteride inhibits the activity of an enzyme that converts testosterone into a form that is metabolically active in hair follicles.

“The presence of finasteride metabolites in the urine makes it difficult to impossible to detect the presence of a number of the performance-enhancing steroids banned by WADA.”

There you go. Not looking good when you consider Lazza spent the best part of the 2006/07 A-League season crocked with groin and knee injuries and undergoing surgery.

And the Court of Arbitration for Sport hasn’t been sympathetic to athletes who’ve unwittingly tested positive to finasteride in the past. USA Olympic skeleton rider Zach Lund, who was in a similar situation to Lazaridis, was banned from international competition for a year.

However, it’s worth noting other hair-loss treatments, such as Rogaine, which contains monixidil, are not covered by the WADA code and athletes are free to use them.

The players’ peak body, the PFA, has come into bat for the player, pointing out that Lazaridis was granted a Therapeutic Use Exemption (or TUE) by the Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee (ASDMAC) in January, two months after he tested positive.

PFA chief executive Brendan Schwab has made it clear what defence they’ll pursue, calling their client’s situation “one of unfortunate timing and the bureaucracy needing to service a professional athlete who plies his trade throughout the world”, or, in other words, the fact he divided his time between England and Australia during the relevant period.

He went on to say: “He has advised the relevant authorities since 2005 of his medical circumstances, and those authorities have accepted the legitimacy of his medical condition and the prescribed medical treatment.

“Stan enjoys the full support of the PFA. With our assistance, Stan has engaged Senior Counsel to represent him, and will conduct himself in this manner in keeping with the high standards of professionalism and sportsmanship he has demonstrated throughout his illustrious career.”

Now, Lazza is a champion player. He’s one of my favourite all-time Socceroos. But the fact of the matter is the situation is not far different from Shane Warne’s a few seasons ago. Every athlete, from your neighbourhood weightlifter to your top-paid professionals of the English Premier League, know that they have to be extra vigilant about what they put in or on to their body.

It is something drummed into them all the time by the authorities. The information of what they can and cannot do is provided in full by their relevant employers and, if they still don’t get it, at WADA’s website.

If Lazaridis says he informed the authorities of his condition as far back as 2005, ignorance cannot be an excuse.

Now this is a terribly unfortunate turn of events, as this was to be Lazaridis’s last year in football and this will not be the way he wants to go out, but I can’t see how he can get out of this if the rules are applied.

Here you go.

Mackie handed out a trouncing of epic proportions against an under-manned Carnegie South in Longmuir Shield cricket.
After skittling The Redbacks for just 90, the Mackie batsmen then feasted upon Carnegie South’s bowlers in the last 18 overs of the day belting 2/171 with Dale Park making 42 after brother Craig had been the bowler who had terrorised South taking 6/19 but the big story of the game was a demoralising century by Machine captain Damian Krotofil who lead from the front in their quest for outright points with an unbeaten 110 off only 52 balls in a totally awesome display.
The young Redbacks, so full of hope after a big win last week were powerless to stop Krotofil and they were not helped by the absence of their most experienced players, Glen Gallagher who was getting married and Scott Handley, who was acting as his best man. Hopefully Gallagher had a better day than his team mates.
Washington Park had a strong day with the bat posting 272 against the young Omega bowling line-up. Gareth Finney was just the man for the job after a whirlwind start to the day and he was unfortunate to be dismissed for 96 when he richly deserved a century. Finney capitalised on the early fun had by Daniel Donati who dominated the early part of the day smashing 72 before being dismissed in the 16th over after belting nine fours and two sixes in his quick fire knock. The Omega men battled back well after removing him but there was always the steady presence of Finney to guide The Sharks through. Chris Clement avoided the Donati onslaught to capture 4/49 in a fine sustained spell.
Brighton Union’s classy Darian Kuzma made it back to back centuries when he peeled off a brilliant 143 against Le Page Park. Suffice to say, he would have enjoyed this week even more than his effort in the seconds last week but he seems to have played himself into some seriously good form. Justin King’s 55 was the other noteworthy effort in Unions 7/327 against The Panthers.
West Bentleigh’s batsmen finally hit their straps as they managed 256 against East Sandringham. It was the talented Holmes brothers, Damian (63) and Shaun (41) who combined well after West had lost a couple of early wickets. Luke Manders (4/57) was the pick of the bowlers and ensured that things didn’t get too out of hand for East who may find the total a good challenge.
Hampton Central star Steve “Comewhat” May kept his team in the game with a superb 7/92 against Bentleigh Uniting. Uniting will have been satisfied with their 244 after a couple of poor efforts so far this season. It was an even performance with recalled all-rounder Damian “Vita” Britt (48), Ryan Davidson (34), Steve Harris (32) and Tom Backman (31) all getting good starts. This is a must win game for both teams with the loser falling to 0-3 and likely out of finals calculations even at this early stage with a logjam already forming higher up the ladder.
Bentleigh ANA made a good fightback against Elwood but The Woods grabbed back the ascendancy again by the end of proceedings. ANA were in all sorts early being 6/63 with Elwood proving brilliant in the field but gun bat Adam Mikkelson (79) and third gamer Brad Lovell (46) added 111 to salvage the innings. After Mikkelson was dismissed Lovell followed quickly and the innings was quickly wrapped up. Marshall Bunting and Matt Gamlin impressed with the ball and The Woods just might be the real deal. We shall soon see as if they can haul in ANA’s 215 they will hold top spot.
In Woolnough Shield the bowlers held sway with Steve Dewhirst (East Sandringham) 6/60 and young quick Anthony D’Amico (5/30) being the best performers but elsewhere the batsmen were on fire.
Peter Manakis (Bent.Utg, C Grade) 112, Luke Hesketh (Melb.Wanderers, C Grade) 125, Graeme “Egg” Wilson (Omega, E Grade) 110, James Conway (Carnegie South, F Grade) 111, Darren Lockey (AERSL F Grade) 123, A.Birt (Kingston Heath, G Grade) 156 and East Bentleigh Centrals Blachander 131 (G Grade) were all prolific scorers but could not match ANA’s Tim Caterson 215* (E Grade) or Heatherton’s “Harby” Singh 240 (F Grade). Interestingly Caterson, a regular First XI player for ANA, usually bats at 10 or 11 in that team.
There were still bowlers who had stellar days, especially Hampton United’s wily Tom Angelidis who snapped up 8/32 in E Grade, Moorabbin West veteran Trevor “Tulla” O’Leary (7/25, D Grade), Southside East-Caulfield’s Katah Singh 5/3 (H Grade) and Hampton United’s Under 12 spin bowler Darcy Kennelly who took 4/27 in H Grade but they were all upstaged by Kingston Heath Under 14 Shane Kenny who grabbed that cricket rarity, a double hat-trick (four wickets in four balls) as he took 4/6. Tom Earls (Elwood) also starred taking 5/20 in Under 14 Grade.

This could have been mentioned a few posts back but about greatest moment but is very relevant now. What about in the 02/03 season when East Sandy had 4 successive centuries for 4 different players in 4 games. Anton Duddy, Guy Martyn, Ryan Murphy and Gerard Cull made centuries four games in a row. A great batting effort that certainly wouldn't have been done too often.

Re: CMCA- Ommies to remain in top grade

Gee wiz. Leave the state for 5 days and it's all happening.
Burg - I believe congrats are in order. A little girl for big bro to protect and look after. Well done, champ.
Have to agree with Corpy about Duddy. He's shot. Too injury prone. Corp or Manders to do the most damage with the bat for East. Boys are gonna have to bat well to chase down 250+ this weekend.
Brett - what's the story with the big things you keep promising of these Uniting youngsters? They look to be getting starts, but can't go on with it. Hardly living up to the raps you're putting on them.
All looks to be happening in Woolnough after 5 weeks. Kingston Heath look like they'll get rolled and Union & MW playing each other, meaning the winner of that game might be the only remaining undefeated side. I'd expect Bunter's boys to defend 240 against Cluden and sit along side them though. No surprises the weekend saw another run feast for many bats. How'd the balls hold up?

He's not too far off. Been in some good form and will get his chance. Nothing wrong with building up the runs in the lower grades. Let's not forget we didn't go oo badly either, making 270!
After an ordinary Round 1 we're hitting our straps!!!
