A very slow day in the test, like a throw back to the 60's! England were tied up in knots by the Kiwi spinners and only the two at the end looked to attack.
England need another 100 runs at least to save the game at this point.
Broad should be in for Harmison after this test but batting wise we are already playing 'the future' in Cook, Bell and Pietersen. Beyond that, I don't think there are many candidates who would be ready for it. Bopara is an option, but performed poorly against Sri Lanka.
In the medium-term, Edwards at Somerset and Denly at Kent look to be a good pair of openers. Hildreth doesn't look too shabby a middle order player either.
Hildreth needs a big county season in my opinion, that would really push into contention.
The Scottish player, Kyle Coetzer might be worth a look as well if he can develop further. Saying that it's not the batting that worries more the long term bowling.
Long term bowling wise we're laughing: James Harris, Chris Jordan, Steve Finn and Adil Rashid are all under 20 (by some distance) and Plunkett and Broad aren't many into their 20s either. I've heard good things about Mervyn Westfield from Essex as well.
The big thing is that they have to continue to develop though, I like the look of Jordan. He could be a potential number 8 batsman and 1st change bowler.
Rashid is another interesting one but he needs to be handled correctly and not made out to be the second coming of English spin.
Gets interesting now, we could concede a 100 plus lead with 5 sessions to play. NZ throw the bat and score a quick 150 odd, it good set up a nasty last day for England.
That's probably the only they'll get a result in this game, but I don't think England would press for a result after playing so defensively. England probably want to bat as long as they can. The onus is on NZ to bowl them out as soon as possible, but, going by the scorecard, this doesn't seem like a pitch that assists the bowlers.
The way its going England will be all out shortly and New Zealand will have a handy 120 lead. A quick 45 over thrash, set England 300 to win in a little over 3 sessions.
Different looking game now, isn't it? England still facing probably up to 300 to chase in 3 sessions but the momentum is very much England's at the moment.
Just took one day to turn the game on its head. England must be cursing themselves now for playing so slowly. 300 is chaseable but on a last day track funny things can happen. I think England will play safe and try to secure a draw.
Can I ask all you lot that are watching this on sky to cancel your subscriptions and state that your doing so because it's too expensive and that it stops poor sods like me from being able to watch it!
