GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

Was thinking of sending this to the Geelong Addy to see if they would put it in and learn a few things i spose. Not sure if it meets the standard of all of you guys but atleast im having a crack. Only took me 30 mins.

Here goes;

Newtown & Chilwell vs St.Josephs @ Stinton Oval
A Massive run chase looks a great distance for the two Blues at Stinton Oval, with the stocks of the St.Josephs bowling it may be a long day for them. The form of skipper Darren Morgan and ex Geelong teammate Daniel Fanning, they should have the two blues on the back foot for most of the day. Alex Stanley and Adam Lavers have been the back bone for Newtown and both have to fire for any chance of them coming home with the goods. Ben Neville has been a quality pick up and this is the time for him to fire, If St.Josephs get some early wickets it should see the Joeys lads take 5 from 5 by 6:15 Saturday night.

Leopold vs Grovedale @ Burdoo Reserve (Sunday)
Staring the day at 1/45 the Tigers look to see themselves in a commanding position, with Gary Kelson back in the shed it leaves in form Nick Peterson and Chris Cruickshank to reel in the runs for the Tigers. Also with Mark Baker back into the side it provides the added depth to the reigning premiers. But with the bowling stocks of the Lions with Glen Skrobalak and Rhys Zanoni providing a formidable force for the Lions it could prove to be a exciting battle on Sunday at Burdoo reserve, and see captain Barry Tsaitas happy with there start to the 08/09 season.

Newcomb & District vs Geelong West @ Thomson Resrve (Sunday)
Chasing 209 at Godfrey Street Newcomb looks to have a challenge on there hands. Unfortunately for the Dino’s they haven’t fired at all this year with not having a win for the season. Last season saw captain Simon Anderson step up and make a few big scores but with the talent of Damian Koliba who needs a big score to get him going they look for the young kids in Josh Jansen and Ryan Mills to provide the backbone. It wont be a easy task for the Dino’s with Glen Talarico and Sam Loftus providing a good foundation to put the Dino’s in there place. If Newcomb gets over the line it brings the whole competition into a traffic jam and fighting for the last 2 places in the top 6 before the Christmas break.

North Geelong vs Geelong City @ Osbourne Park
At Osbourne Park we have a great game on our hands, with Geelong City posting 216 they will be quietly confident they can knock the magpies off. But with captain Colin Millard pushing for there first win the magpies will have to pull something out of the bag, Millard, Armistead and Hall all have to string some partnerships together and see off the opening pair Adam Marsland and Kent Agg to see the magpies sneak over the line at home. But with North Geelong sitting last on the ladder and City looking to sneak into the 6, it will be a heated exchange of blows and make for a interesting last 20 over’s of the day come Saturday.

Lara vs Bell Post Hill @ Mill Road Reserve
Anybody would have thought it was a rain-affected match last Saturday at Mill Road oval with 15 wickets falling in a day. With Bell Post Hill only making 96 and then Lara at 4/113 it makes for an interesting result this Saturday. Lara already has first innings points and with run machine Chris Bambury already back in the shed Bell Post Hill will look towards Travis Faulkhead for quick wickets to contain Lara to a minimum of 200, so they can bat again. With Brad Stacey not playing it depends on too few to contain Lara. The day will probably end in Bell Post Hill having a bat later on in the day with no more of a result coming from last Saturday. Captain Tim Sells will be looking for positives from the game if Lara bats all day and will look for something special from his troops.

East Belmont vs South Barwon @ Winter Resreve
The game of the round between the Lions and the Swans at Winter Reserve, see a top of the table clash with to of the heavyweights of the competion. South Barwon will be tested against a very confident and dominating East Belmont outfit. Brett Anderton and captain Brad Haunstein are the key to the bowling attack of the swans and with Phil Hunt unavailable this game Brad will be looking for someone else to pull the weight of the bowling stocks. Early wickets are definitely the key for the swans with Andrew Baars in fine form and Englishman Tom New showing his class. The swans will want a few quick wickets and with East Belmont having the depth in the batting stocks they were lucky to get away with a win last week against Bell Post Hill and they will want to prove themselves against the swans if they are wanting to push for another premiership this season. South Barwon in a thriller with Brad Haunstein providing the key to the win.

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

not bad mate not bad at all. definitely better than the half sentence than we usually get and as a player from north it makes a funny change to see three batters mentioned and not one of them being alf clark

You should get a job at the Addy, Leopold V's Grovedale is @ Newtown Sunday not Grovedale, apart from that pretty good

Going on past form and there are alot of cricketers in the gca that are not really classed as bowlers but do have the odd trundle and pick up a few cheeky ones.

BPCA Game Wrap – Round 5
Barwon Heads vs Queenscliff
Tim Michell
A stunning turnaround has given Barwon Heads the upper hand in the Seagulls top of the table clash against Queenscliff. After winning the toss and batting, the Coutas reached 0/72 from a frantic opening nine overs with Michael Farrell and Daniel Mair displaying their knowledge of a bouncy Queenscliff pitch.

When Mair was removed by Jason Mallett for 40, the complexion of the game changed, before Darren Shapter and Luke Orvis steadied the Coutas. Left armer Josh Dunne removed both batsmen after a partnership of 75, leaving Conan Roos to clean up the remaining Queenscliff batsmen. The Seagulls opener finished with 5/38 off 11 overs after conceding 0/32 in his first four, typifying the change in fortunes for the visitors.

Barwon Heads captain-coach Chris Welsford highlighted the effort of Roos to bounce back as a key to the Seagulls profitable day.

“If you wanted to highlight one real turning point that changed the game, Roosy’s second spell would be it” Welsford said.

“They got off to an absolute flyer, but from when we got that first wicket they lost about ten wickets for about 100, so we knew that first wicket was going to be crucial”.

Welsford said his side recognised the threat posed by second placed Queenscliff.

“Obviously they play their wicket pretty well, which they showed early, so the conditions were pretty difficult”.

“We expected it to be one of our biggest tests to date but I was really happy with what we did. We’re not doing anything differently, we’re just focused on doing the simple things well which is what we are trying to work on” Welsford said.

While there was a suggestion at the beginning of the season that the reigning premiers bowling attack may be susceptible without spin bowler Sam Schaller in its ranks, Welsford said he had no concerns coming into the season.

“We’ve got plenty of depth and have given away four new A Grade caps already this year. We’ve got Conan Roos, Les Wallace, myself, Todd Friswell and a host of others, so we’ve got the bowling covered” Welsford said.

After claiming last years title from fourth, Welsford said his side would be focused on maintaining a top two place.

“One of our biggest threats now being the hunted is dropping one against one of the lower sides because everyone is keen to beat Barwon Heads”.

“Last year is the past, and we’re purely worrying about this year and being in the best possible spot we can be at Christmas”.

Welsford said the key to his side’s continued success would be the form of the Seagulls batsmen.

“Last year we didn’t have a lot of guys making consistent runs so we had to defend small totals. Our bowlers are still doing the job, but to have the batsmen doing the job too has been the key”.

Wallington have given themselves a serious chance of a first win since 2006 after compiling 207 against Geelong West. Darren Cameron was the hero for the home side, finishing with a well made 93. Ben Atkinson also played a role in a vital opening stand which set the platform for what should be a competitive total. Michael Andrew finished with six scalps for the Cheetahs, who will need Adam Melville to play a major role this weekend, and must look to bat out their 75 overs.

Drysdale are in a fairly comfortable position after the first day of play against Barrabool, having rolled the Bulls for 160. Wes Grigg and Kane Pickering put up the only real resistance for the visitors, who were dismantled by a classy spell of spin bowling for Brendon Sharpe. Sharpe finished with figures of 4/49 from 18 overs, with his side reaching 0/4 when umpire Michael Stott called a close to the days play.

Collendina have given themselves every chance of claiming victory after dismissing Newcomb for 187 at home. The Bulls showed some fight in the middle order, before an eight over spell from Ewan Handley which yielded 3/13 ended the visitors hopes of a 200 plus total. The game marked the debut of two new Cobras players Brendan Hall and Jimmy Bartel.

Jan Juc and Ocean Grove’s clash at Jan Juc Park is evenly poised after Paul O’Donoghue grabbed two late wickets to get the Grubbers back into the contest. Only three Ocean Grove batsmen reached double figures as the visitors were dismissed for 162. Both sides will be aiming for a positive start this weekend to take the ascendancy in an important fixture for the make up of the top six.

St Albans have stamped themselves as a serious contender after piling on another massive total against Anglesea. The Saints finished the first day of play at 9/327, with the returning Sean Braniff the only batsmen not required. Sean O’Leary finished with 87 to show he has not lost any touch after returning to the Saints at the beginning of the season, while Rory Fitzgerald and John Irvine Jr. also made fifties. Anglesea will have their work cut out this weekend, needing Ash Poulton and Darryn Jacobs to play major roles.
