City will definately be stronger this year.

Is Stacey going to West? BPH could be gone without him if they dont pick up anyone.

Have newtown done any recruiting?

Stacey is still unsure. Work gets in his way and he might not be playing at all yet going to West. Has lost a fair bit of interest lately I think.

Who'd go to Newtown?? The only way they stayed in divi one is from their past! Lucky, very lucky!

You may be right but still reckon South and Lare vulnerable....

Your right about South. I think last season would have been the first time other players have really stood up around Brad to help the team. Be interesting to see if they can back that up. Be a good test for them.

Lara do rely on Hughes and Bambury a hell of alot, they are in the same shoes as South. They will need others players stand up around those two like South did with Brad last year.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

Maybe but you could say that about some other clubs as well. The relegation thing doesnt work as well because they keep changing the goal posts depending on who it is. if you finish last see ya, thats the way it should be.. Manifold dont deserve to go down they matched for most of the year with the top sides.... I know its a points system but should you go down because your 4ths finish bottom and you 1's finish in the middle...

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

i do feel for manifold. but at the end of the day, what can they do. Suck it up and smash everyone in div2 and make a statement! In saying that, the criteria is the criteria, if they dont measure up as well as everyone else, then that's the way it goes. No good saying, this team should go do, or that one should.

Somehow i dont think we have heard the last of it.... Id be betting on Manifold staying in, and sunday games here we come....

Funny thing is; they wouldn't smash everyone in Div 2 and more than likely wouldn't even make the top 4. If they do go down (which I reckon they will) and they don't make the finals; then perhaps it has all happened for a reason.

I dont know much about Div2 but at least they had the guts to come up and have a go, by the sounds of it some other Div2 clubs should take a leaf...

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

Best bat: Alf Clark (still). Score is on the board I'm afraid. G Kelson has almost single-handedly won Grovey two flags though.
Best bowler: Maybe Tsitas but probably Brad Hauenstein; don't forget he opens the bowling for Vic Country.
Best 'keeper: Yes, probably Breuer but Anderson & Kelson right up there.
Best all-rounder: Haunstein; no contest. Hughes 2nd.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

Surley you cant split Haunstien and Hughes, Hughes and has won 3 medals, Haunstein the same, There as good as each other.....

Not really whether you have the guts to have a go; they were the best club on the assessment according to the three year cycle. I see where you are coming from with Highton but I can also see what they are saying in deciding to stay down; the previous climate in Div 2 with all the hard wicket sides doesn't equip you well for entry back into Div 1. Playing Blue West one week, then Little River, then Bell Park doesn't get you in the best form or mindest to take on East Belmont then Grovedale. Now that Div 2 structure is better, the gap should close a bit.

Hauenstein has played Vic Country the last three years inc being named captain last year. Also selected in all-Australian Country side, the year before last. Achieves at a higher level. Best all-rounder in comp.....just.

Fair enough but why dont they take a chance, playing higher has gotta be better for the club....

Dont read into Vic country team too much, there are a dozen geelong blokes who'd hold there own at that level, dont worry about that...

I agree to a point. If Geelong could pick its best 12 players from the GCA, there would be a pretty damn good case that it would beat MOST country comps in the country. It is very strong at the moment.

But, you can't take anything away from the guys like Brad, Fergie, Lofty, Bambury and a couple of others that have made the squad over the year. Amazing a achievement.

Funny thing is Brad opens the bowling for Vic Country but not for his club. Bats high in the order at South and makes plenty of runs but then bats low for the Vics. Proves there is plenty of super bats in Victoria.

Not many gca players have the desire to play vic country. I would never play because you miss games for your own club. Plus would never take 2 half of my annual leave to play cricket. Especially if you have already taken a week for country week.

I am sure all country week sides are the same. They could quite easily say "if we put the best team on the paddock, we would clean up." Doubt any of the country week sides are anywhere near full strength.

Agree to a point but it is a pretty fair honour to be selected to play for Vic Country. Me personally; I would move heaven and earth to get the time off work.
