South Africa tour England

Re: South Africa tour England

Didn't really bother with sorting out the true batting order past Flintoff to be honest. Not sure whether we need 4 or 5.

4 would be the ideal as we could fit in the extra bat but then again, we do need to take 20 wickets.

What's the odds they promote Broad to open and drop Strauss for a bowler?? :p

HAHA!:D Broad seems more inform with the bat than any other english player, but he NEVER gets wickets ... 19 or something from 8 games? shocking:p

GO SOUTH AFRICA

Re: South Africa tour England

I think Colly in for Pattinson if Sidebottom still isn't fit would be an option, but I agree with you mas about Jones in for Broad and Prior in for Ambrose.

And yeah, Broad will be brilliant but he needs to get the kind of rhythm he had againt NZ in the one dayers back again.

Re: South Africa tour England

It just shows the big quality difference between England and Australia. Pattison was no where near being considered for the Australian team - and is not even the best bowler for Victoria. His brother is a much more exciting prospect, I think he played for Australia in the u19s.

Jonesy, that is one of the main gripes with the selection of Pattinson, that he just isn't good enough.

Hes only played 12 first class games:eek:
i dont think its very smart picking someone on form rather than skill...

Re: South Africa tour England

I heard a rumour that England only picked Pattinson because Australia were having a look at him as a possible bowler for next years Ashes. So England picked him and ruled him out of ever playing for Australia. Unfortunatly they didn't bargain for the fact he is rubbish!

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Trust me, England have a history of this sort of thing, Joey Benjamin anyone?

Saying that, they tend to wait to just after their form falls away for good.

If there is any element of truth in that, then they deserve everything they get.

Re: South Africa tour England

Slass, I dunno about the rumor - he struggled to hold a place in the Victorian team. He played 2 first class games for Victoria last season.

Re: South Africa tour England

I thought he was the leading bowler in the Pura Cup?

Anyway as I say it was a rumour so probably holds little truth.

Re: South Africa tour England

Nup - 25th best bowling average in first class matches this season in Aus (including the Indians and Sri Lankans) but he only played 2 matches so that doesn't say much.

Best would probably been Bollinger - 45 wickets @ 15.

Re: South Africa tour England

I stand corrected!

Where abouts are you in Melbourne? I spent three months there last year. Living in South Yarra and coaching at Caulfield Grammar School. I love Melbourne!!

Re: South Africa tour England

I'm heading over to England for days 3 and 4 of the third test - can't wait. Bad news in that I've just heard Steyn is ruled out with a broken thumb :( I was really looking forward to seeing him. Fingers crossed that Nel will be back in though.

Harmison and Colly back in the squad for England - hopefully they can put the dissappointment of the 20-20 semi-final behind them :D

Re: South Africa tour England

I am tipping a huge ton from Vaughan & an emphatic England win..

Colly & Harmy back in the side? Simon Jones would have been better but it looks like they are saving the heavy cavalry for the ashes..

Let's hope that Freddy bowls better this time.. Sidebottom is back which is awesome

Maybe the team will look like this.

1. Andrew Strauss
2. Alistair Cook
3. Michael Vaughan
4. Kevin Pietersen
5. Ian Bell
6. Paul Collingwood
7. Tim Ambrose
8. Fred
9. Ryan Sidebottom
10. Stephen Harmison
11. Jimmy Anderson

Or maybe they will go with Monty.. either way they have some issues the selectors.. I hope they play the 4 prong pace attack with Colly & Pietersen (and even Bell??) as variation

Re: South Africa tour England

Nah I reckon Monty will be in the 11... Is Prior an option or are they sticking with Ambrose?

Re: South Africa tour England

No mention of Prior yet - probably not involved, as it's a bit late to be bringing him into the shortlist the day before the test unless there is an injury or similar. I hate to see Broad being left out, but it looks the most likely scenario.

I'm still not sure about Collingwood myself. Broad for number 6 :D

Re: South Africa tour England

The team was announced on Cricinfo today as:

Strauss
Cook
Vaughan (c)
Pietersen
Bell
Collingwood
Flintoff
Ambrose (wk)
Sidebottom
Anderson
Panesar

From what they said I think the England management didn't want to risk Harmy becuase the pitch might not be fast and bouncy enough.

I agree about Broad, he'd be great to have in the team but I guess he could do with a rest. What would you guys have as your attack for the Ashes??

Way, way, way to early to tell, but I hope Hoggard will be back in the reckoning.
