South Africa tour England

Re: South Africa tour England

Hear hear! It would certainly get rid of boring draws. And it should lead to some very interesting matches.....

They are playing at Headingly which should be a bowlers paradise.

YES!!:D i love a good bowlers pitch:thumbup1: and a good english collapse:p

Re: South Africa tour England

If a spinners pitch with a fair bit pace and bounce as well was around somewhere that would be awesome - wait, that's Old Trafford and they've not picked it!!!

Re: South Africa tour England

Sidebottom may miss out with a back problem, which would make it easy for the selectors to include Flintoff.

Re: South Africa tour England

Noooo! When did Sidebottom get injured?
Will Flintoff have the stamina to bowl that many overs?

During the last test he was complaining that sleeping around made his back sore. I don't know if he's picked up another injury on top of this, but he certainly looked stiff at Lords.

Cricinfo said:
The Nottinghamshire seamer, Darren Pattinson, has been drafted into the England squad ahead of the second Test against South Africa at Headingley, after James Anderson reported a stiff back during training.

Pattinson is the second addition to England's party following the call-up of Hampshire's seamer, Chris Tremlett, as cover for Ryan Sidebottom, who has also been suffering from back problems. England have yet to name their final 11, although Andrew Flintoff will start his first Test from 18 months, and has been inked into the No. 7 slot.

So it looks like both Tremlett and Pattinson are in the squad, which must be up to 14 by now.

Re: South Africa tour England

Strange that he's being called up ahead of a number of others. I've never heard his name in relation to the team before this :?

What's wrong with Hoggard?

EDIT:
Also, with overcast conditions set to prevail - will this favour england for the 2nd test? Their attack does tend to rely on swing.

Re: South Africa tour England

I'm surprised Pattinson was picked over Jones and Hoggard tbh. The reason they gave was because he swings it but so do the other two, while Hoggy has more experience and it's his home ground and Jones would be in a higher pace bracket.

Re: South Africa tour England

I thought they would of picked Jones over Pattison and Tremlett over recent form, hasnt he got a load of 5-fers the last few weeks?:???

Re: South Africa tour England

I think they have an eye on Jones, but want to make sure he really really is fit. I reckon he could be back towards the end of the year, unless these injuries for their hand.

Re: South Africa tour England

Yeah, he's had 3 or 4 this season already.

I think you've hit the nail on the head, Ed, they don't trust his fitness yet. It still doesn't explain why they haven't picked Hoggy, especially after what he did in the last series.

Re: South Africa tour England

Oh I bet England are KICKING themselves that they didn't bring in the appeals system for this test! Do you think the umpires are deliberately making crap decisions to strengthen the case for the new technology

Re: South Africa tour England

That was a shocking decision for Cook and now Vaughan's gone as well!! KP is in a bit earlier than he thought, I bet.

As a side note, I read that the side winning the toss have won the last 5 tests at Headingley so things aren't looking great for England.
