South Africa tour England

Re: South Africa tour England

I can't believe they have put Ambrose at 6. And Pattinson? What were they thinking?

What exactly has he done to warrant an England call-up?

Swings the ball and has been taking wickets for Notts (I think). Still, Hoggard has been good in the county scene too, and it's his home ground. That would have made more sense for me.

This innings is over!! Anderson and Panesar at the crease, I give it 20 mins

You never know though, maybe SA will be skittled, with Pattinson getting an 8-for .... maybe :p

Re: South Africa tour England

Plays for Nottingham?

I'm guessing it's because he plays at a ground similar to Headingly in terms of swing. By all accounts, Hoggard has lost a yard or two of pace, so that's why he's out. Harmison and Tremlett offer something that may not be quite what the selectors think is needed and they are still nursing Jones through his comeback.

Saying that, if they wanted a horses for course selection, then surely Lewis (Glos) would have been in the frame? Other than that, not sure who else fits the bill.

Anyway, it's a moot point at the moment as we seem intent on getting out for less than 200. From what I can see it looks like most of the wickets are down to the batsman picking the wrong ball to drive (or poor footwork) and playing with hard hands.

Re: South Africa tour England

It seems that the selection of Pattinson is causing a lot of discussion. Should he have been picked? Time will tell, but I can't seem him bowling South Africa out.

Reminds me of this fellow - Martin McCague.

Re: South Africa tour England

To be honest, another slow old day but then again, South Africa have plenty of time and no need to take chances.

Pattinson bowls around the late 70's to early 80's (mph).

Re: South Africa tour England

Hmm did England risk picking Pattison over a more experienced player like Jones?

Re: South Africa tour England

England made a massive mistake in picking Pattison. He'll be no more than a one test wonder (which is being generous).

South Africa should have this test wrapped up by late tomorrow.

Re: South Africa tour England

argh! After Jimmy putting in a solid performance this morning KP just wasted it, batted like a 20-20 player and got out quick and cheap

Re: South Africa tour England

What a turkey . Wasnt that special a ball from Kallis but threw his wicket away, crazy shot. England in trouble, desperate trouble. Bell and Cook have to bat out 5 sessions

Re: South Africa tour England

England have had the rough side of the conditions, decisions and they had a LOT of balls miss the bat/not carry etc in the Saffers innings so you can't really heap all the blame on them. That said, KP got himself out in both innings when he shouldn't have and South Africa have played well to take their chance. The only difference I can see from the Lords test is that pitch isn't as flat as at Lords (which is a good thing) and so England won't be able to bat out 2 days.

Re: South Africa tour England

This test is fantastic! SA have it won, but Broad and Pattinson have got them back in credit! They'll have to bat again now whenever they get one of these out. Very tense and exciting the last 20 minutes - Broad has been fantastic!

EDIT: Ah crappit, Pattinson bowled. He did the job when it was needed though, supported Broad ably for his 50 and then helped them over the line. What are the chances of SA being bowled out within 8 runs :p

Re: South Africa tour England

poor show by the england top order again, they need to make a few larger scores and the bowlers are going to have to figure a way to bowl south africa out.

at least we made them bat again well done broad

Re: South Africa tour England

The thing is, do we make wholesale changes or just subtle ones? At the moment, I would go for this:

Cook
Vaughn
Strauss
KP
Bell
Prior
Flintoff
Anderson
Sidebottom
Monty
Jones

I like Broad, but at the moment he just isn't doing it with the ball for a number of reasons, most out of his control and whilst he's doing it with the bat, wickets are what we need more of at the minute.

Jones is my pick as he has a knack of clearing up tails, which is a very handy skill, he also brings something extra to the attack with his pace and ability to reverse swing.

Prior in as keeper for his batting, although Foster is the other option. Both are adequate keepers and will have to do at the moment. Anyone who mentions Read for the job will be banned from this forum ;)

Re: South Africa tour England

Haha you put Anderson above Sidebottom and Jones below Monty!

Do we really need five bowlers, though?
