Subbies 2011/12

For the record, in my previous post, i was not 'having a go' at Chris Steven's as an umpire.
I believe him to be quite good as the previous posts appear to say.
Maybe the direction of discussion should have been forwarded to the 'Umpiring Panel' who appoints umpires, whoever that may be.
Good luck to all teams and umpires involved in finals this coming weekend.

The Umpires Appoinment Committee is Jim Earle (Chairman), David Priddle (Malvern) and Craig Ortland (Noble Park) SS told us that Caulfield and Oakleigh should win. Out in the north, from what I heard Melton are a shoe in, but can Altona beat Kew?

They certainly can, quite evenly poised game. Altona got up on the Sunday in the season proper, I think the main difference being Kew's bowling is superior to Altona's. I'll say Kew, in a two day game. If it goes to a one dayer anything could happen.

Melton v Kew GF

Any feed back from latest subbies meeting on CV's response to the subbies submission to them re the annual dividend? Ken Jacobs' thoughts are shared by others and makes it doubly difficult to consider in depth at this stage the 2 tier comp concept. In considering the 2 tier concept it matters not whether Ken meant the 'death' would be the folding up of a number of subbies clubs or, that they would find another comp better suited to their needs. Either way, we would no longer be looking at a 28 club comp as the starting point for the division into 2 tiers.
As no member responded to the above question I resorted to making enquiries of my own. I am advised that CV came back with a revised offer but, of greater immediate importance is that I am advised only 7 of the Premier Cricket clubs need oppose the phasing out and it is back to the drawing board for CV. I am also told that 5 Premier clubs are thought not to be in favour of the phasing out and some frenzied behind-the-scenes activity is now going on by parties on both sides of the fence to secure their preferred outcome. Any feedback from members following the vote on this matter at this week's Premier Cricket Club meeting would be appreciated.

Well everyone was right and we have a Caulfield V Oakleigh final and a Melton V Kew final. One versus two in each section. We now await members views of the finals. Could I suggest that our prognostications are accompanied by a score for each team so someone can rightly say "I picked this"

In the SE, clearly the 2 best teams have got through. Probably the best batting team against the best bowling team. Think Oakleigh are going a tad better at the moment and on this basis, will pick them!

I think umpires tell the truth because they are decent honest people providing a vital service to the game.

Westland seeing as how you're the umpies mate what do you think of the semi finals appointments. Looks like last years finalists of Raby, Goodman and Soulsby will reappear in the grannies again but who will take Wes Burr's spot from last year since he left umpiring? And what thoughts of the advisor Stevens giving himself a semi final appointment?
The 'umpires mate' sadly has to inform members of a boo boo by the esteemed Mathew Raby yesterday. He was at sq leg when he gave Gale run out when 'Butch' failed to make his ground in response to a quick single called by Mick Allen. Butch, in reference to the 'keeper, immediately yelled out loud enough to be heard fr the boundary ' he didn't take the ball' and stood his ground. Hrvatin walked down the pitch and, after a discussion with Mathew, he (Mathew) signalled a reversal of his decision. Butch's score at the time was about 20. One or two Balwyn players seemed to have a few words to say to Butch just after the reversal, but things quickly settled down.

Two cracking games in the North/West over the weekend and two shockers in the South/East but yes as you said the two best teams in both groups have got through to the Grand Final. I hope the Melton v Kew game is much closer than when Melton ventured out to Kew and absolutely smashed them a few weeks back. Should be two crackers though.

I'll agree with SS and say that Oakleigh should win. Travaglia, and Warren have centuries recently and Jones and Ensil chipped in with runs lately too. However Caulfield have not set the world on fire and chuck in Pinwill's ten wickets in the finals series and Caulfield may fall at the last again. In the west Melton have lost one game in two years and the runs are flowing at the pointy end of the season. Kews bowling is not good enough, 53 overs from two bowlers against Altona will not work against Melton.
So as a score is asked for I'm going Oakleigh 280 V Caulfield 210 and Melton 240 V Kew 190. Oh and don't discount a washout in both groups.

Despite Harwood and Jones taking only one wicket between them and Melton having to chase 213 after fielding the previous day, they still won comfortably. It may have been a bit tighter if Balwyn's keeper hadn't stuffed up running out Butch Gale early in his innings. Melton also have the advantage of playing at home. Can't go past them. Kew's only hope is if Melton have one of their odd bad days with the bat. If Melton bats first, I tip 240 off 80 and Kew all out for 160. If Kew bat first I tip Kew to make 190 and Melton losing 6 wickets getting them.

I would have to agree with everything you've said, but inparticular regarding the Melton v Kew GF. As was mentioned previously 2 well contested semis in the NW group and 2 thrashings in the SE group, looks to be the opposite for the GFs. I'm tipping Melton easily and Caulfield just.

This came through on Twitter last night.
The VSDCA Executive would like to advise the motion to significantly reduce the CV admin grant was last night defeated by the CV delegates.
The VSDCA wish to encourage open discussion with CV to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for each association & more importantly cricket

As most predicted, the two best in each group are playing off, weather permitting we should have two fascinating GFs this weekend.
Can't go past Melton especially at beautiful Maccy Park,if Kew win the toss and post a score it could be a nail biter.
Similarly,Caulfield deserve to be favourites against the Oaks, although both sides in sparkling form.
Cross might be the key to Caulfields chances after missing out the last two weeks.
I would urge everyone to get along to these games as the pressure cooker of GFs are something else again.
On another note, the proposal to reduce the dividend was defeated at CV last night, should make most breathe a sigh of relief.

I am really pleased to learn fr P'teer and you of CV's failure to get the support needed fr the Premier Clubs on the phasing out of the dividend. Thank you.
Its a pity the GF grounds are so far apart. Its may be impractical or too expensive to justify, but I think it would be a much better spectacle if 1sts GF's could be held at neutral ovals alongside each other. It seems a heck of a disadvantage for Kew to have to commute on successive days to Macpherson. Additionally, will the home team solely reap the benefit of increased bar and canteen takings? When the Championship was always held at Caulfield, there were rumblings of discontent fr other clubs on that issue. Is it still the case that the home ground club gets to keep all of the bar and canteen takings? Any thoughts on the question of whether or not the Ists GF's should be played on neutral grounds?

Yep,that's the $64 question now that we don't have the championship final.
I would think we'd be the only comp that does this, certainly the vtcaplay theirs at neutral venues.
It's a great pity Saturdays games are so far apart,it would be ideal to be able to get to both ,but way too far Caulfied to Melton.
I think there may be too many scheduling headaches to do it any other way though, maybe if 2 clubs from the same group eg Altona played Willy you could play at Yarraville say,or Bayswater played Croydon you'd play it at box Hill etc etc.
Impractical though when you have Melton v Kew,or Melton v Anyone really.
Food for thought,anyone?
