WHAT HAPPENED

There was an unusually big quake around that time in Lisbon with a tremendous impact on western Europe. Need to check the year.
Bingo Thomas, that'll do! 👏🥳

The 1755 Lisbon earthquake, also known as the "Great Lisbon Earthquake and the "Disaster at Lisbon", occurred in the Kingdom of Portugal on Saturday, 1 November 1755, the Catholic holiday of All Saints' Day, at around 9:40 am.

Chronologically, it was the third known large-scale earthquake to hit the city (following those of 1321 and 1531). Estimates place the death toll in Lisbon around 30,000–40,000. A further 10,000 may have died in Morocco.
