Wicketkeeping Assistance

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

The golf ball is a smaller target to try to catch, if you have no trouble catching it, then in theory, catching a bit red/white ball shouldnt be too much trouble.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

I wouldn't get too cute. You want to get used to the weight and feel of a cricket ball first.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

My club coach has said to our keeper that you are only meant to dive one way, to your left (when a right hander is on strike), and on your right side you and the lip should both be able to take comfortable catches without diving. Just out of interest, is that correct?

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

with the golf ball drill, the ball also comes back quicker bouncing off a wall than a cricket ball would. also with the giving, its just the same as you would take a catch, a little bit of give to lessen the blow

He has a point. Good footwork often negates the need to dive at all but if the ball is waaay down the leg side you will still need to dive.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

Hi Guys,

First of all I hope you guys had a good christmas and I wish you alla fruitful newyear.

What are your views on the build of keepers? Does it really matter if you are tall? Is it a huge disadvantage?

For your info I am 6ft 2" and 14yrs old at around 150 lbs, does this bode poorly for me in a future in keeping or should it not affect me?

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

There have been several tall keepers who have had success. It's a slight advantage to be smaller but good technique and fitness can overcome this.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

Hey WBK, thanks, all the best for 2008 to you too.

Although, in my mind, you are built for fast bowling [I know... don't go there!], I agree with David. No matter what your height, as long as you are fit and concentrate on good technique, you'll be fine. You do need to work on stabilising the spine so, as long as you perfect the side raise/side plank, you'll be great.

Go out there and show them what you can do in 2008 :laugh:

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

ok thanks,

Here's a questions for all those keepers around.

Can you bat in a masuri keeping helmet? Because i was told it is uncomfortable to keep in a normal masuri.

Here is a video.

Sorry about the poor quality, but I recorded it with my cell off of the television because I cant get the video off of the camcorder unless I finalize the disc and if i finalive the disc, i cant record anymore on that disc. So I will finalize it when the disc is done and you will then get the full vid and a high quality.

I know that it is only 3 catches but any comments?

Why dont you just buy an Albion helmet to keep and bat in?

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

Can't tell much with 3 catches in the backyard, probably needs to be behind a batsman in a game or net session, but I know that's probably not possible but it looks like you have good footwork.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

i have kept in friendly matches... and it looks alot different when your team m8 is throwing u a wide one... then it does when u have to charge down leg to take one that has strayed... maybe a video of someone actually bowling 2 u, with u behin stumps.... seems u have the right idea but ;)

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

Yeah it looks like you move around well. But it will be good if you have a bowler bowl to you. Cant wait to see the full thing up though

And i think i have seen keepers using the Masuri helmet, if thats any indicator to them being good

I have to echo what has already been said in that you seem to have the basics down, which is a great start.

You move well and look tidy with the gloves - nicely bringing them into the body.

Keep on doing what you're doing, get plenty of practice and you'll be alright!

As for height and keepers, well I don't think it really matters. It may be an issue if you grow to be 6 foot 10 but at the moment you're within a reasonable range. What you may lose on the ground, you may gain in reach.

Re: Wicketkeeping Assistance

You must be good WBK; there appears to be a halo above your head :laugh:

Stance:
Good flexibility;
Weight appears to be on the balls of your feet;
It is hard to see but you appear to be keeping your head still and eyes level;
You look relaxed.

When you take the ball:
Good agility;
You keep your head and body behind the ball;
You rise with the bounce;
Your hands give.

So far, all seems OK but I would like to see how you take a high ball.

My only 'constructive' criticism would involve the first take. I would have liked to see your right leg move back with the 'give'. However, you probably would do this with a high ball.

Not bad at all.
