Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

Just watched the news - looks like you've got more to come on Thursday and there's a chance it's going to miss us which is good as it means I'll be able to get to our nets on Thursday night.

congratz, im sure u'll get plenty of wickets:)

i wish there was a cricket team for year 12's lol
and yeah i think the snow is guna hit me agen :/ which means the only practice im getting atm is just spinning balls or objects in my hand.
England play soon should be a gd watch :)

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

Well done unspinnable! I'm guessing you're in Australia or somewhere? I like the title specialist spinner and the fact that you're in the A Grade team - keep us posted how you get on, we want to hear how you get your wickets and do those cocky batsmen that come bounding down the wicket giving it the Biggun!

Virender - yeah no-one does anything outside cricket-wise here in the UK even if it's not snowing apart from me and Gandalf and that's only because we're mental wrist spinners! Loads of people play indoor league cricket in sports halls and around this time of year most clubs start net sessions indoors getting ready for April. I've got my team nets tomorrow - I can't wait!

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

If the trials are anything to go by, anyone who trys to smash me, I give a nice big off-spinning bouncer.

works like a charm :)

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

Sounds like you've got some fielders that can catch. My younger son who's only 7 bowls Leg Spin and he forces all sorts of errors but no-one hardly ever manages to catch the ball despite the fact they're usually Dollies - Gutted!

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

The inturning bouncers are funny, at the trials, one of the better batsmen totally misread it and it bounced, hit him in the head and he fell back on the stumps.

sorry but i dont understand this ball,
because if a spin bowler did a bouncer at me the ball wud be travelling towards space or six which ever you prefer.
can you explain this bouncer, do you suddenly turn into a medium/fast bowler?
if i want the ball to bounce i just bowl the top spinner but tht gets to about above the waist but nowere near a bounce of a bouncer.
i would like to know about this ball because by the sounds of it, it does the job for you.

and dave

the only nets i can practice at are outdoors lol thats why i cant practice atm because of the snow but as soon as the snow goes ill b back at the outdoor nets rain or sun lol, but i would like to know more about indoor nets to save my finger frostbite lol do i just go to my local leisure centre and ask to play in them, or do i have to book them sumhow, how does it work?

thanks.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

It requries a very hard and bouncy pitch, and pretty much, instead of turning away from them like they expect, it turns in a little bit, but I take a bit more of a run up and put a lot of pace onto it and top-spin.

Generally works much better on short people though :)

One of my deliveries is a bouncer. You can bowl spin variations that bounce in a regular manner or skid in low, But if you put shed loads of top spin on googlie or Leg Break which is what I'm seemingly able to do at the minute it bounces up into the bats face. My leg break dips late so comes down quickly because of the top spin and then bounces up rapidly into the chest, just under the chin from right in close to the batsman - it's not a short ball as you're imagining (it seems) and it's bowled as one ball amongst several that don't act in the same way. It's quite funny that you're claiming that you'd be putting the ball away into the next solar system for a 6!

Try your local secondary schools. I don't know where you live, but our local council provides lists of all the local schools and their sports facilities on-line. The list shows whether the schools have cricket facilities or not and list a contact number. It's just a case of ringing the schools and asking whether they're interested in hiring the nets out for an hour or two. If the Sports hall where the nets are isn't getting used they're usually prepared to do deals on the fee they charge. We get charged 40 quid for 2 hours, so it needs a handful of you to commit to doing it unless you're wealthy enough to blow 40 quid on your own! This is what we get for 40 quid..... Wrist Spin Bowling: Cricket Sunday it includes a mat, but we have to supply our own stumps.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

The Gipper; I've got footage of the Gipper in action, as soon as I can I'll upload it to youtube. It shoud be there over the next 48 hours. Search for it using someblokecalleddave and you'll find all my bowling vids.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

Thanks Dave for the info on the nets, ill get the number for the local sportshall and me and mates can chip in together to get 40quid or ill get my friend to see how much he's skl would charge to lend them out.

and i understand this bouncer ball now lol and yes i did think it was the short pitched version but know i realise its just a vicious top spin ball, lol still rekon i could hit it to the moon tho:p

will look out for your vid on youtube, look 4ward to watching.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

How does everyone practice when it is cold and dark? I bowl once a week at my club sides nets and then end up waiting another week. Any good training drills that can be done would be appreciated.

On another note, when you do go to nets do the batman play normally or do they just look to try and smack you for six every delivery? For me its the latter and its frustrating as you end up bowling a totally different line to a match one.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

Yeah - you might have to haggle on the price as the first quote was 75 quid! Don't just look at schools - leisure and community centres sometimes have the same facilities and they want the places being used so they too might be up for some negotiating?

Yeah you might hit it up there once or twice, but you'd be getting lulled into my trap if you did!

If it's dry and above 6 degrees I bowl anywhere there's a flat bit of concrete playgrounds etc

But I use Hockey Balls as they're the right size, weight and bounce. With regards the bats - yeah they do like to get carried away don't they as Leggie Law is so enthusiastically demonstrating. Try Bowling some lesser spinning top spin balls nice and straight and fairly slow, gradually working shorter and shorter so they come down the wicket. Then change it - big leg break with loads of top spin and the wicket keeper will have him. Just vary it a lot, they hate it.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

Think I might have to wait a bit longer then before getting some more practice in.
Its annoying re the six hit heros in the nets as they never play that way in a match and then wonder why they cant play spin! Have you tried the "round the loop" drill that Philpott recommends in his book? I am going to try it this week.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling

Yeah it works, I had this freakish day over a year ago when I first read about it right in the midst of my total inability to bowl anything that resembled a leg break. I was most impressed with the spin it back in towards yourself approach to get the big leg break. I was drinking at the time so was half cut and relaxed and me and another bloke went outside and I tried it and for half an hour bowling back and forth to each other I was bowling big leg breaks by spinning the ball back in towards myself as Philpott decribes in the book and these Leg Breaks made Warned Ball of the century against Gatting look tame! (or was that the beer)? But kidding aside - yeah they turned massively! I couldn't do it again after and haven't since - Gutted!
