Australia vs England - The Ashes 2021/22

When we go three -nil up CA needs to think outside the box and draft in one or two next gens for their Test debut rather than hang into at least two guys that will never make Test cricketers. CA wont but they should.

What Hameed goes and not Burns. Bewildering. Surely they wont drop Broad in probably his last Test series. What is all this hoo ha over Wood. He is their quickest.. certainly not their best bowler. He averaqes @33 career.

Burns ended up being dropped in the end, Broad was dropped too which was surprising given how much movement has happened on this deck so far.

Wood doesn't have the best record but has pace which is what England need. Their attack in the last game had little to to variety which proved to be an issues for them.

Hazelwood is out with a side strain.

He was a question mark heading into the game and wasn't fit in the end. I imagine he'll play in the New Year's test in Sydney.

Problem with Harris is he looks like the best batsman in the world when he plays for Victoria but he gets found out whenever he gets to the elite level.

Glorified Shield player.

You'd think that will be the case but George Bailey and Justin Langer have made it clear they want Harris to have a concerted run this time. So that is telling me they will want him to play all five matches. Like the old saying goes. 'is harder to get out of the Australian team than get in'.

Classic case of looking good at Shield level but not much chop at international level. He was decent today but the issue is whether that is the norm or the exception.

Harris must have compromising pics of them if that's the case.

The worst opening batsman I've seen play for Australia.

I'll back you on that. You watch today he will come out and score a biggie to cement his spot in the eyes of CA.

He'll get until the end of this series in my opinion, perhaps longer. His innings today should ensure he gets a bit longer to cement hisspot.

Harris fast becoming another Shaun Marsh. Fails miserably in general but when the axe looms he pulls off a miracle and we're stuck with his mediocrity.

Shaun Marsh was a much better player than Harris, just never fully realised his potential which was most unfortunate.

76 or not I think he's got to go.

He simply doesn't pull off these knocks on a consistent basis which puts all the pressure on Labuschagne and Smith to come to the rescue.

He did all the hard work tho. That is the grating part. Take a look at his footwork in slow motion. Too slow. Is never in position to cover his off stump so when he plays the ball it is too far from his body. His technique is simply not Test standard. ditto Travis Head.

No doubt he should go but will likely get more time after his innings on day two regardless of what happens from here.

Agreed that Head isn't much chop either but has runs on the board so will likely get more time as well.

Pretty big couple of days. England were poor on day one, some very questionable shot selection and batting cost them dearly and getting to 185 was generous in the end thanks to Ollie Robinson's cameo at the end of the first innings.

Australia started their first innings well but England fought back on day two only for the tail to wag somewhat as they eked out an 82 run lead. Starc and Boland's purple patches reduced England to 4/31 at stumps on day two, still 51 runs in arrears. Root is still at the crease with Stokes, they'll need to do a fair portion of the heavy lifting from here along with Bairstow and Buttler. Not sure what Leach was doing with that leave, very poor decision so late in the day to leave such a delivery.

Australia's 82 lead was the death knell for England in this series. Root and Cummins knew it.

England certainly let Australia get away from them somewhat late in the day in their first innings with Starc and Cummins getting some crucial runs to eke out a reasonable lead in the context of the game. England just needed to get through the end of the day with minimal damage but their openers weren't up to the challenge. A lot rests on Root, Stokes, Bairstow and Buttler now in the first session on day three.

Yes this where our selectors have their priorites skewiff. They hang onto mediocre guys like Harris and Head etc in the hope that they will eventually show consistency which you must have at this level. Starc, another, has been less than mediocre past two years, has never been consistent, yet, what he has done this series, specially the pink ball games, will keep him in our attack at the expense of more skillful bowlers.

How do you think Root will play it. He knows he is on a hiding to nothing if they just try to block. He may play it safe but I think he'll tell the other three to take the attack to the Aussies or die trying. Even a draw means the series is lost so it is go for broke, give them a reasonable score to defend as they know we have to bat last on this lively track. This may yet pan out to an exciting finish.
