i disagree with the east bit. always have lots of numbers, & for years they played all their 'own' players in 1st grade & got smashed. it was only after they 'bought' thomson, simpkin, yates, irving & a couple of others, that they got success. they continue to tell everyone about their great junior program, but when you dig a little under the surface, alls not true!!!!

Not a bad point here. I suppose it all comes down to the culture of the club and whether it is good enough to sustain success over a long period.

From the other side of the coin, in order to change East's old 'losing' culture some serious player acquisitions needed to be made.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

sorry i also forgot to say Wendouree who have outstanding success at junior level and it is all starting to how with success at senior level!

But on east ballarat, they were very unlucky to miss 1st XI finals last season with an amazing amount of young players who played juniors with the club.

Also have an ex junior player under 20 years of age playing premier league 2nds. Must be doing something right there!

Having good juniors is only one piece of the puzzle but it is the foundation of a good club. Its hard to say what 15 year old kids are going to be doing 4 or 5 years down the track. Some might move to melb for uni or to play at higher level and some might give up for footy etc.

I think good recruiting is still the main ingredient for a good 1st XI team. Look at the premiers over the last few years such as Redan, East & Wendouree all teams inlcuded atleast 3 players who were recruited at senior age and didn't play juniors with their club.

You certainly pay attention mate. Jake Thorne wasn't it, from east?

You can tell the clubs with good juniors. They always have good people volunteering their time. Wendouree certainly have got them. I think Rob Gordon has done a great job with the Point juniors. He has really brought them along. Hopefully, in a couple of seasons they will really see the benefit.

Good to see young ones go to Melbourne and mix it with the better players. Really helps to develop their game.

Did you used to umpire in the ones or twos? One thing I have noticed is the lack of depth in the bowling department among the clubs. There are a couple of good young bowlers around - Kentish from Mt Clear, Moore & Nijam from point, Thompson & Ringin from Naps, the Allan boys from Redan. After the first 2 bowlers that's about it really. It would be good to have someone with some pace with a bit of height to get some good bounce.

Good point Napisan. When kids get jobs or goto uni/school, you never know what could happen. I suppose the main thing is that you need good leaders at the club. The captains and coaching staff need to be very supportive and nurture the younger guys in order to fast-track their development and minimise the time at the wrong end of the ladder.

I've seen many times the effect putting the wrong person in charge and that they can do more harm than good. I don't need to mention examples here. Wendouree, Mt Clear, Ballarat-Redan and East have got good people in charge of the cricket side of things. Matt Skinner, Irving (now Yates), Darren Fletcher and Sean Lynch will have their players playing for them and as a unit. Therefore I wouldn't be surprised to see these sides up and around the top 4 again this year. Obviously, the cattle you put on the field has a large impact but so does the leadership. Usually with ordinary captains, splinter groups form and it causes disunity among the team and in extreme cases, the club. This problem is exacerbated if the team drops the first 2 or 3 games for the season. Maybe an occupation hazard? What do you think?

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

I wouldn't read too much into Point's comings and goings. Kelts has moved back to Melbourne, Kleiny has retired as his work is flat out, Jones wanted to do his coaching thing, Shaun wants to take it easy in bush cricket, Kingy's body is buggered and Palms isn't interested in cricket these days.

Romma was never a big trainer so struggled to stay in the side and Palms is a good mate of Steve O'Loughlin's so he may play soon.

A strange one with Jones though. I'm not a big wrap for him but he and O'Loughlin seemed to get along well and he bowled alot in ones games too. I probably came out on the front foot a bit much being (I'll admit it) a proud Pointie but he got a good go at Point under Klein and O'Loughlin.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Who are the new recruits from each club this week?
Any big news recruits or just some chopping and changing around the league?

I would probably put Blake from mount clear in there too. Had a great finals series last year. Eamon Johnson is good to watch from Wendouree too. Very sharp. Wheeler from Coronet is a huge trier and would bowl all day if given the chance. The best bowler i think would be appleton. He was very hard to get away last year.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Blake almost won Mt Clear the grand final last year in one spell,
late on Saturday evening.

it was awesome to watch

I wouldnt put Yates up there. I think Mount Clear did the right thing though. There seemed to start to be a bit of bickering among players when Jeffrey was last captain, but now under Fletcher the mounties have got a new lease on life and they really do play for each other.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

They are still a little bit gung-ho when batting.
they all strike the ball well but they need someone
with some Craig Jenkins like grit (other than Jeffreys)
to bat for a long period of time.

be very careful shakes_7, there is alot of love for the mt clear cc on this board. they wont hear of nastiness directed towards their boys. i know you are new here, but it may be worth you reading some of the earlier posts that were on here towards the end of the last season, very cocky indeed, until they took the gas.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Constructive critisism cobber.

Cheers for the concern though. They are a good young side but just need to learn to bat together.

where do you think mounties will finish this year?

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

top 3 for the mounties.
they have a good mix of batting & bowling but a lot depends on Blake.

Yeah pretty even in terms of balance. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Hill go this year with a couple of inclusions. It would be good to get some more depth happening in the Comp

Darley are always quietly working away at recruits down the highway also.
Don't be surprised if they come out firing this year

B.Parker from Darley is due for a big year, especially if they bat him in the correct position. He batted well at Country Week last season.

The 40 year old virgin (J. Dewar) should also 'blast' out of the blocks.

M.Cape maybe captain after not taking up the Bambino's offer of playing with Lara.

Hopefully with Phantom, Mumpy and Wheels the Caravan mob can get some consistency happening this year.
