For example, at your club... would Simon Allan be as an effective bowler if he could only bowl 9 or 10 overs? I understand this means the clubs with more depth would be better suited and perhaps thats the way it should be. Do we want someone like josh white making nice little 60 or 70 nos or do we want to see what he can do with 70 overs to bat?
- easier to pick teams
- results on the day
- same conditions (weather, pitch, outfield etc.)
I have a mate that plays in a 1 day comp interstate and he reckons its great.. sure it mightn't be for everyone but as has been discussed earlier its all about getting work/life/sport balance and making cricket accessible.
I can see that it doesnt test some people out over 70 overs batting/bowling, but what about the flipside of that, when a game is over at 2pm day 2 and its just junktime.. what does anyone really get out of playing cricket for the next few hours.. Nothing! Fact of the matter is not everyone loves rocking up week 2 defending 40 and needing 9 wickets, its a waste of a Saturday for all involved. That sort of scenario shouldnt happen with a 1 day only comp. Don't forget Garnoo there are 8 grades of cricket in Ballarat, not just 1 - I dont think too many District Div 3/4 blokes would have a problem playing only 1 dayers...
