Leg Spin

Re: Leg Spin

Yep - in the short term I'm kind of stuck with what I've got e.g. practicing on my own. But, because of the input you blokes (And girls) are giving me you are directing my strategy a bit. (1). I don't think without your recent comments I'd have re-visited trying to recover my lost Leg Break. After looking at the Terry Jenner vids I had a go yesterday in the freezing cold and found that I could get the ball to spin and some aspects of the line and length were there - so because of the discussion and analysis here I will be giving it more time over the next four months.
(2). Through this forum it's likely that after Christmas I'll be looking to have some tuition of some sort at the Essex County Ground through Liz's suggestion and contact details.

So it's not like I'm working on this in total isolation and I do feel all the things that you lot are suggesting all make a lot of sense and it's all really helpful - so cheers. So keep up the suggestions and encouragement and I'll keep firing the questions and my reports on my progress and ideas!

Re: Leg Spin

Simple things like the fact that you've said that when you first come to bowl you can spray the ball around all over the gaff - things like that make me sit back and think "Oh so that's quite usual then" because I imagine anyone that bowls Leg Spin just turns up - throws the ball right into the spot they want and gets it to turn massively. So stuff like that is helpful.

Re: Leg Spin

I'd offer my services to you, that could sound so wrong on many levels  I think you just need to find the right bunch of guys to practise with.

And spinning in the freezing cold isn't good, just remember that you're fingers are probably at only half capability due to them stiffening out, i should know ;) I do most of my bowling in winter as its always raining and no one wants to walk to the pub!

I wish ;) No, i've been playing this game for long enough to know that when i turn up, it doesnt mean my spin has.

Re: Leg Spin

Yeah - it's a problem not having anyone around to practice with and a stark contrast to last year. In the short term I've not got any answers. The spring and the new season bodes well, although I've lost my best cricket mate an Indian bloke who bowled finger spin of some sort - he's moved into London.
Potentially the summer's going to be epic though - I'm trying to re-form a team at the college I work at combining the remnants of our old team and our advesaries "Sports Science Lecturers" some of whom are really good cricket players. I'm also trying to get a big bunch of Asian blokes to play proper cricket as they messed about on a playing field all summer last year with cricket tennis balls and tiny bat and stumps, but so obviously could bowl really well and bat quite well too! There's 25 of these blokes and they just need some encouaragement and organsiation and they could have 2 teams!!! I've got a ton of gear they can borrow I've bought off ebay, I've spoken to the local council and they've said if I can get these blokes together they'll give us concessionary rates on cricket pitches and all sorts! The potential for cricket this summer is massive for me and that's all excluding my Sunday 2nd XI team. So it all may seem a little lonely out there at the moment but come the summer I'll be up to my neck in it!!!

Re: Leg Spin

Re: Leg Spin

"I wish No, i've been playing this game for long enough to know that when i turn up, it doesnt mean my spin has".

Isn't this partly due to the wicket sometimes as well? I know our wicket was in a terrible condition all summer that I was playing and everyone was saying they couldn't get the ball to turn?

Re: Leg Spin

Dave, Scroll right down to the bottom of this page.

Very, very, very (!) bottom line "Google visited last this page December 08, 2007..."

Next line up, first word "calypsocricket"

Hit it :cool

Re: Leg Spin

Dave, it is the wicket, but generally i can extract a little spin from a terrible wicket, just because i know how to flight it in.

Re: Leg Spin

No Simbazz - I'm just going to ask Sean how he's getting on with some of these points -

Sean you previously commented -

When I did it, it span to the left. That's where it's meant to spin right?

To your second point on your video, I think in my action, my palm might not be facing the batsman enough. So it's not spinning enough.

Also, I bowl about 1 toppy or wrong' un an over. Is that too many? How many should I be bowling?

From what you're saying here it sounds as though you're getting the spin on it, but it's just a case of where your hand is at the point of release - which you've acknowledge having looked at the video it seems?
With regards the Top Spinner I'd say one an over sounds okay as long as it's not always the same ball in the over. Simbazz would probably have better advice - or does anyone else want to chip in?

Other than that how's it going with the leg break - have you been out practicing? We're hearing on the news here in soaking wet and freezing cold UK that you're in a bit of a drought out there?

Re: Leg Spin

Yeah nice one Sean - but you've got to credit me with being the most active contributor?

I still reckon we need more input from other people.
