Leg Spin

Re: Leg Spin

I had an hour or so again today and it went really well. I'm now counting the wides rather than the good balls now because the good balls are becoming more of a feature of my bowling and at some point I was only bowling a dodgy ball about 1 in 6 balls, the other 5 balls were generally spot on or very close to my target area.

The Leg break seems to be coming together slowly and today I was getting it to turn but at the expense of accuracy and the follow through was better. If the weather remains dry over the next couple of days I reckon I might get my spikes out and set up some stumps and give it a go for real and see how I do as I feel like I've made some real advances. In the summer I keep records of my bowling and write lists as I bowl of my performance, so I can check to see if there's a marked improvement - I'm pretty sure there's going to be as on average in the summer I was only managing 4 good balls per over and the parameters that dictated a good ball have since been narrowed. It'll be interesting to see the difference, It'll also be interesting to see how much the ball will turn with a seam on grass. Let's hope it's dry tomorrow.

Re: Leg Spin

I'm hoping for you Dave!

Let us know how you go on in the summer, really you can be spot on from now till the summer, but its when the pressure is on that you'll know if the winter has been benificial.

I'm just hoping all this time you've put in is! I thought i was commited but an every nighter is amazing. I get down to the nets every 2 days or so.

So for that i'm really hoping you make it!

Re: Leg Spin

I reckon with all the hours I'm putting in and all the advice I'm getting here I am making advances. For instance in the last week my leg break is beginning to look as though if I keep working at it, I might be able to use it by the spring. Additionally my confidence can only grow with each of these goals being acheived and at the current rate of improvement it looks as though I'm going to be in a far better situation than I was back in September.

I have to point out too that my confidence has got to be in far better form for the new season for all the reasons above and in the earlier post. My biggest challenge last season was just to get the ball straight and on line and I always was working on a 50/50 margin of error. I was never that bothered by being hit for 4's and the rare 6, what always mortified me and unsettled my confidence was throwing the ball out to 3rd slip or wide of backward short leg. That was the killer for me and what with the 50/50 chance of bowling wide when it happened it would always threaten to spiral downwards into a psychological personal hell.

I'm now looking at my ever increasing accuracy, my extended range of options, my new support base (You lot) and the knowledge that next season I'll be turning up early for a pre-match practice with our teams best leg Spinner each match - I'm looking forward to a potentially good summer!

I've just seen the weather report and we're scheduled for another 3 days of dry weather albeit cold, so you can guarantee I'll be out on the grass with real cricket balls and stumps tomorrow!

Re: Leg Spin

Sounds great!

Dave, trust me, if you go for 36 in your first over, don't be too worried. Just put it down to finding your feet, its just the second over that you should be judged.

Revenge is sweet in this case ;)

Re: Leg Spin

I've just been writing in my cricket blog and realised that I've changed something else with bowling -

"The other thing I've noticed that has changed is the walk-in. I now do this thing which is like a dance move where my right leg passes round the back of my left leg as I twist my body so that the delivery action is bodily sideways rather than forwards. It's difficult to explain - I've tried to do a diagram but it's not that easy".

My walk-in has always been a bit suspect - a bit forward facing and lacking with the follow through. Today and the last few days trying to get the Leg Break going I noticed that it was quite fluent with a good follow through especially with the other variations. Again I don't know if this is a bad thing, but it seems to be working for me. I'll have a look at it tomorrow while I'm bowling on the grass and see how it works with spikes on.

I know that wearing spikes makes a big difference in your bowling, so thinking about it tomorrow may not produce the results I'm expecting just because of the grip! Complex stuff this leg spin lark!!!

Re: Leg Spin

I think it shows the value of keeping a blog, you've been able to notice a change in your bowling which you may have missed otherwise.

Re: Leg Spin

Definitely - David on Harrowdrive advocates setting yourself goals and recording what you do (Or at least he has with me in the past) so that you can see that you're making advances and it does make sense.

Re: Leg Spin

I spent 45 minutes today on grass, but it was very sticky and soft so there was very little bounce, but it was useful in that my accuracy with line was good, far better than in the summer, but I still need to concentrate on length - I've still got a tendency to bowl too long. So this is something I need to look at.

I also was aware of my walk-in and this seemingly new way that I do it. But this evening I've been looking at some video's on youtube and noticed that it's something a lot of people do in a similar way to me and it just appears to be what you have to do in order to keep your balance when shifting from a running forwards motions to a throwing over arm sideways motion. I looked at Lasith Malinga and Mathew Hoggard and they both seem to do it, but it's difficult to see the mechanics of it as they're so fast and most of the video footage is concerned with their bowling actions from an upper body perspective and not so much how they run in. I reckon if it is a change it's a change for the better. I need to get someone to film it so I can have a look at it and compare it with video footage I've previously shot of myself bowling.

Re: Leg Spin

Yeah don't hold your breath though, I don't know anyone who's got a phone or camera that records those files that are MPEG's or WMV's as they're the ones that are easily converted or uploaded to the internet. All the footage I've got already has been captured on DVD tape and that has to be "rendered" or something - which I think means converted to a format such as MPEG or WMV and takes ages and requires professional software?

I'll just have to watch out for any of my friends who have phones or amateur cameras that have video capture and see if they'll do it for me. So it may be a while before I'm able to come up with a result.

But it's definitely something I'd like to make available in order that you can scrutinise my action/bowling.

If you know the format then I probably have a converter for it.

Re: Leg Spin

Tom it's DV tape, I'd have to send you a DV tape cassette and you'd have to spend ages looking through it trying to ascertain the relevant bits, it's not practical.

Re: Leg Spin

When I'm at work in the new year I'll talk to our technicians and try and find the best way to film me bowling so that I can submit it to youtube or send MPEG's or WMV's.

Re: Leg Spin

W'hey I've just found a little digital video camera on line that can record up to 2 hrs of "AVI" video footage. The camera is only £26! What do you reckon on AVI is that transferable to Youtube and the likes and is it easily edited? Do any of you blokes know?

Re: Leg Spin

I've just had a look around and answered all my own questions. AVI looks good - seems to be one of the preferred options on youtube and is usuable with windows media player, so it looks like video analysis by one and all could be a new option for me in the near future!

Re: Leg Spin

I would never EVER watch myself, i'm a very "picky," guy, and if theres something i don't like, i tend to get it changed.

If i watched myself on camera i'd just pick out every flaw i have and it would definately be detrimental as i wouldnt be playing a natural game.

For you, i hope it works as you'll see where exactly you're going wrong. If you start to feel yourself hating the way you bowl, turn the camera off, and forget about the idea. If you're a prefectionist like myself, then it could harm you!
