Re: mmvca

Well the big one has arrived and it should be a cracker of a contest fought out between two deserved sides. Assuming that both clubs take in the same teams as the semi that'll mean from the last time they played (yes, that infamous game) St.Mary's will have 6 changes and St.Andrews 4.

In my opinion both sides are carrying 2 players. I'll let you decide who they are.

Batting - Seaniger/J Tapner v Zimmer/S Harris.....Seaniger is more your typical opener than the other 3 who all like to play extravagant shots from the start. Although its a four-day game its hard to see these 3 curbing their natural game and digging in. Zimmer is a time-bomb and doesn't hit any off-side shots. Harris likes hitting over the top but St.Mary's need a big effort from him to get through the tough, hostile period first up which will set it up for the middle order. Justin is also a time-bomb and hasnt been giving the scorers too much trouble of late. Josh will put value on his wicket and occupy the crease.

Marinos/Taylor/Jolley/G Tapner v Hunter/Brown/Richard/Kett........Jimmy is also a batsman that puts great value on his wicket but is extremely gettable early, if he gets through the settling in period it could be a long day at the office.....Nev has been there and done it before and like Jimmy will be keen to make up for his single figure score in last seasons victory, Nev has been hitting the ball allrite lately and will be intent on building partnerships, the key is to not bowl on the stumps to him....Jolley is a big game player and didnt disappoint last week, he asserts his authority at the crease from ball one and knows where every single is, however they are very reliant on him and if he fails their heads will drop slightly.....Gav is extremely dangerous and only has to bat for an hour before you know the game might be out of your reach, if he's in the 'zone' look out, however he needs Jolley or Taylor batting with him and getting in his ear to take full effect......Hunter hasn't got the greatest technique but is averaging 50-odd so he must be doing something right, his batting has really come on the last couple of years and a lengthy innings will be needed from the skipper.....Brown is just about the best bat in the comp technically and the boys will be looking for a big one from him, but like Jolley the total is very reliant on a big output from him, will murder any half-volleys....Richard is a big hitter like Gav who can also be destructive although you'd back Gav to come off more than Richard....Kett is St.Marys answer to Taylor....both wily, old veterans and club legends....has been a great bat over a long career but one wonders if he can still sustain the form in the intense pressure situation that awaits his team.....the Craddock boys wont be up to it...yes I know the younger one made runs last week but St.Andrews is a totally different ball game with Jolley suffocating the batsmen and getting inside their heads....Smoke should account for these two...David is a new addition to St.Andrews line-up this year and hasnt really impressed so far and will no doubt be very anxious....and any team that has Scotty Wernham coming in at no.8 should be licking their lips, very handy talent who can also hit the ball a long way...Grant can hit the ball but is a bit hit and miss, same with Plugger...not sure about Cacchione and D.Harris' ability with the bat but did notice that Cacchione made 50-odd against Wests...Newton and Groves are bunnies.

Bowling - Newton/Sc Wernham/G Tapner/J Tapner/Groves/Seaniger v D Harris/Grant/Cacchione/Hunter/Harris/Richard.............On paper St.Andrews' attack looks the goods but we know the game wont be played on paper. Smoke and Scotty have shouldered a lot of the workload this season and will no doubt be keen on getting into the middle order early on. Attacking fields will be set and Harris and Zimmer will be looking to hit over the field so it should be a very interesting battle early on. Pace from Smoke and constant pressure from Scotty will make it hard. Then of course they have Gav who can make the ball talk and Justin whose action can be tough to face with his slightly different grips on the ball. Groves is just a trundler. Seaniger is their spin option this time around without Nugent (could he be a surprise inclusion for David or Groves? doubt it didnt he walk out?) and might need to do a fair bit of bowling if Scotty and Gav's bodies dont treat them well. All-round a pretty impressive attack who know how to get the job done......The St.Marys boys have shared the wickets around pretty well this season and will be banking on D.Harris to continue his great form and spearhead the attack. He's capable of bowling a heavy ball and getting the batsmen to hurry their strokes. Grant is like Wernham in the sense of being very crafty and hitting a good, consistent length. Cacchione is another handy bowler with the ability to swing the ball and cut his fingers across it, which will come in handy on Raeburn. Hunter is an extremely good spinner who mixes his length and pace nicely and ties down an end and gets through his overs. The key will be to draw the batsmen out of their crease and use the spinner-friendly surface to push it across them. The St.Andrews boys will be willing to let him bowl dots and will look to score at the other end so if he can manage to pick up a couple of middle-order wickets it'll go a long way to putting them in a good position. S Harris will also be used, possibly in tandem with Hunter with both looking to put pressure on and have a couple around the bat. Harris doesn't have the consistency of Hunter and therefore will leak more runs with St.Andrews looking to take full advantage of any little opportunity. Richard completes the attack with some slowish mediums but will only be a relief bowler. Zimmer lowers his colours to Plugger in the keeping stakes.

Captains - Jolley v Hunter
Both very tactical and meticulous planners. Both sides rely on their main man to have a healthy contribution. Jolley has the edge in experience and has better options at his disposal. Hunter is leading a team high on confidence and will be telling his boys to play with the freedom they have since that outright 'defeat'. Advantage Jolley.

St.Marys $2.00 v St Andrews $1.72

Whilst I'd like to see a St.Mary's victory I believe that St.Andrews have better all-round options and that their experience on the big stage will stand them in good stead. Weather definitely wont interrupt the first weekend and both teams will look to bat first. Good luck to all involved and I look forward to keeping an eye on proceedings over the 4 days:D

Re: mmvca

Can anyone tell me who is playing in any of the other grades? We have heard lots of talk about A Grade but who r the teams to beat in the other grades. I only know that we (St Andrews) have a strong team in a one day comp but we have no other representation on the weekend in the lower grades. How do the other finals look?

They already have had a taste on Sunday and look what they did to East coburg, might ration it out the weekend.

Two teams(what they are)having a red hot go is what the next four days will give us,the results will take care of themselves.

Banno, I take it you've had a very slow day at work or you have way too much spare time on your hands. Very comprehensive summary there, but not much there that I can disagree with.

Enjoy your free weekend.

This forum is built on pumping up your tyres, so take a deep breath.

St Marys are red hot confident of taking it out after winning 7 straight and carrying no one, (trust me i know) and to say there is no pressure on them is laughable.

Re: mmvca

A bit full on guys, Lets leave the samashing a bashing to St Mary's and St Andrews cause it promises to be a ripper.
Couldn't pick a winner at the moment but I think the MMVCA is the winner. You have the champions of last year vs the Best team so far this year. Can we ask for more?
Socials bad luck but congraulations on the year you guys have had.

Good call.

Week in and week out you guys play each other and build up relationships, whether it is for the ability of the opposition or you make some good mates.
Some of the comments in the last week are very ordinary and personal,we have a great competion which shows by the different teams that made the finals this year.

Over the hill, too slow, too old and many of these comments are good fun and come the weekend all will be revealed, but we need to understand that personal attacks only make the attacker look stupid.

I know a lot of the people making comments on this forum and by no means do i think they are stupid and at any time make myself available for a chat or a scotch.

We as a competition are better than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats if the players get 2 nights sleep huss.

Its pressure pressure pressure.

Yes i agree with a lot banno had to say. Although his verdict should read ST MARYS WIN. They expect and should start favorites, but that counts for nothing.

although i am sure St andrewes will put up a good fight.

Good luck to all

Re: mmvca

As a St.Andrews man, ive played the match over and over again in my head, but the results are coming up the same, openers get of to solid start jimmy, nev and dave all score 80 and above, taps gets his 50 very quick and from 7 down they put on another 150. St.Andrwes make 600 and bowl St.Marys out twice with a day to spare. Heres to hopeing. Go Sainters
