I've seen some of it but not alot. But I've heard Freddy is due back in next Test. So who do you reckon will make way? IMO it would be one of the openers Strauss or Cook. I think the former will go.

I reckon pretty soon we're going to see yet another keeper in the England team. Perhaps Simon Davies?
Paul Collingwood will make way

Re: South Africa in England

As expected, Paul Collingwood makes way for Freddie and in the best selection of the year, Patto makes his debut with Sidebottom unfit and South Africa are unchanged

England 1 Andrew Strauss, 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Michael Vaughan (capt), Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Tim Ambrose (wk), 7 Andrew Flintoff, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 James Anderson, 10 Monty Panesar, 11 Darren Pattinson.

South Africa 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Neil McKenzie, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 AB de Villiers, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Dale Steyn

They picked their most in form swing bowler, very good bowler is Patto

What about Hoggard and Simon Jones? Jones has average of less then 15 in the seven games he has played. Hoggard must be wondering what he has to do to get a gig.

Jones is apparently not bowling at full pace enough to have proved his fitness, plus his wickets are in division 2, Patto in Div 1

Hoggy was dropped at the beginning of the year and is only likely to get back if Anderson gets injured or dropped as they are too similar to play together

Re: South Africa in England

Billy continues his fine series with yet another shocker against England, Cook out for 18 for a ball brushing his thigh pad and being held by Boucher

1/26

Re: South Africa in England

Just like the first test, an shocking decision followed by a Vaughan failure and England struggling at 27/2

Fair enough but averaging less than 15 at less than 100% is still good form nonetheless.

I still think Hoggard should be in the side, his use of swing would be invaluble especially with the English conditions being so conducive to swing bowling. Don't really rate Anderson.

Re: South Africa in England

De Villiers tries to claim a catch that was clearly not out

Thank god Billy referred it to the third ump and it was given not out

Re: South Africa in England

Strauss edges a Morkel lifter through to Boucher for 27.

England in early trouble at 3/62.

Yeah it means when he bowls he is effective, but England need a bowler who can be relied upon all day, he might only be bowling 2-3 short spells

Anderson is shit but neither is effective when the ball stops swinging, Patto can also be effective with the older ball which neither of those 2 have shown much with

Jones may only be effective in short spells but you only have to look at Brett Lee to see what a short, effective spell of bowling can do. Using Lee in short bursts has proven to be a revelation for the team and also for Lee himself, it has seen his average drop to below 30 for the first time in a long time.

Even when the ball stops swinging, I still believe Hoggard is the better bowler. I can't see anything in Anderson, his bowling doesn't have that killer instinct on occasions and he is too expensive, you can't bowl a bloke who's going to leak five an over in a test match.

Re: South Africa in England

Morkel bowling really well, with Steyn providing good back up.

Kallis hasnt been too shabby either.

If Jones survives the summer then he will be on the plane to India, it can be effective but Lee does it for different reasons for Jones, i'm not sure whether Jones is up to the fitness just yet where he can bowl 4-5 effective spells in a day and be relied upon if we need a wicket late in the day

As for Hoggy and Anderson, sure Hoggy is slightly better but I dont think it would make much difference so probably no point making the change yet

Pattinson's playing? They must be desperate.

Thats a shizen move. I would have thought a whole season in the English comp would have been a given before even being thought of for test selection. Obviously the Pommy bowling stocks aren't too crash hot atm.
