Melton"s protest against Ivanhoe was upheld last night which drops Ivanhoe to 10th and extends Melton's lead to 5 points over Willy.
I guess if you don't cover your wicket you don't have a leg to stand on and the right decision was made.

Agree that Ivanhoe had to be held responsible for failing to lay the covers. I hope at least privately the umpires were reprimanded for calling the game off at 1pm before even an over had been lost, not acceptable in my view.

Were they also fined for failing to lay the cover? I seem to recall, years ago, Sunshine being fined $500 for this .

Baysie collecting 10 against Moorabbin must be a timely godsend for them, sures up finals. You'd be spewing if you were washed out in a two dayer against them, 7 points lost!

Caulfield has more depth than the continental shelf. Thorne, Anthony, Rummans, Cross out 'cheaply', yesssss, we are into them here boys; nek minnit, the Denny and Warren show! Give them the flag now; unless Malvern finish 6th and Thorne or Rummo have a wedding to go to on the Saturday of the final ;)

I genuinely think NW is wide open. Brunswick, Kew, Willy, Melton, PV and Yarraville could easily have a day out with one of their star players. Ripping finals series coming up I think. Very hard to pick.

Probably need to look a bit at internal development Caulfield 4th's 10/23 and in reply Oakleigh 1/200+. Also a worry with Elsternwick forfeiting 4th's .

Day 2 of the last 2 dayer coming up before finals. Rain forecast Friday night. Call me a cynic, but something is going to go down with covers this weekend. It's a perfect storm for teams needing mother nature's help!

Forecast rain for Saturday is it not? Makes things even more interesting with the top 6 so hotly contested across both comps.

The 3rds & 4ths should be split into an 8 team division 1 and a 6 team division 2.

The bottom sides getting slaughtered each week does nothing for their player development.

All you want when you turn up to a game of sport as a player is an even contest and that is not happening now and hasn't been happening for a number of years.

Going on results over the last 2 seasons, South East might then look something like this

Division 1

Oakleigh
Malvern
Box Hill
Bayswater
Mount Waverley
Croydon
Balwyn
Brighton

Division 2

Caulfield
Elsternwick
Moorabbin
Endeavour Hills
Ormond
Noble Park

Both comps would have a final 4 which would see 8 teams play finals instead of the current 6.

Start finals st the same time as 1sts and 2nds meaning the GF'S are on prelim final weekend and all the attention can go to the 1sts & 2nds Grand Finals as the last games of the season

Isn't this just making the competition more even for those clubs who spend megabucks on their 1st XI and don't care about their 4th XI? I guess you could call Division 2 the 5th XI, but I doubt that having your fourths playing in the 5th XI grade would change the minds of the executive of those who ignore their lower XIs. Winning 1st XI flags seems to be more important than building a club from the bottom up.

Maybe regional cricket might make more sense for all grades.

This has got noting to do with the 1st eleven.
This proposal is about creating interesting and even games of cricket across the association. Each week there are 56 games of cricket played but in the lower elevens too many are one sided which isn't good for either team.
There are lots of clubs who focus on the club as a whole (Oakleigh & Plenty Valley being the stand outs in recent years)

You ingore your lower elevens at your own peril

Gees, one forfeit and the CSB trolls come running out. I had been enjoying the peace and quiet that followed Whale and co nearly losing their gigs at the CV AGM. How many forfeits in CSB this season? How many clubs have at least 4 teams? And before the trolls trundle out the old travel furphy, your comp runs from Port Melbourne to Bonbeach so pop that old chestnut in the bin where it belongs. If CV were serious about reducing travel, they wouldn't have 15 year olds in Premier 4th XI's travelling from Frankston to Geelong to Greenvale to Greensborough to Ringwood to Cranbourne.

BTW, in relation to VSDCA 4th XI's, some clubs remunerate or incentivise their Coach in part on the performance of XI's below the firsts, not a bad strategy I reckon.

I totally agree with your comments regarding the travel required in PREMIER 3rds & 4ths.

Putting premier cricket aside - I just think we could make the Subbies lower elevens function better for strong clubs and weaker clubs, which would keep everyone more engaged in the competition and cricket in general.

Happy to drive from Croydon to Moorabbin if there is a good game of cricket involved.

It's always an interesting discussion around this time of year about what to do with the 4th XI at VSDCA level. Subbies have tried a few things this year which I commend them on (i.e. One Dayers before Xmas, 40/40 split innings match)

4th XI - when used correctly - is such a critical cog for all Clubs. it's where you should be nurturing your younger juniors into Senior Cricket, and giving them a sense of presence and belonging to a Club as they transition to purely Senior Cricket.
I know some Clubs struggle to field a 4th XI, sometimes every week, but the finger can't be solely pointed at the Exec Level. Clubs need to own recruitment, player welfare, Junior Cricket transition etc in order to be successful.
