Who have you got that's up to it or worth a go?
I would try Mc Gain from Victoria again or Doran from Qld. Smith will play in the 50 over stuff for sure later in the season. Some one who was at the academy with warne said the other day on radio that smith is a better bowler for his age then warne was. At twenty warne still bowled balls that bounced twice or did not land on the pitch! But Warne was a bigger spinner he reckoned.

Is that an exaggeration? Where was he playing at that age and how did he get spotted if he was that bad?

He was first spotted by Shaun Graf and Rodney Hogg in melbourne club cricket. He was a huge spinner but bowled some total crap as well. At the academy not many people thought he would make the big time. Everytime someone saw him he was smoking fags, drinking coke and eating meatpies. When Mathew Hayden first saw him he said " check this joker out, what a loser"

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Two)

Hey everyone, im a novice leggie (having only been doing it for 4 games) i have developed a faster ball (not a flipper) like a medium pace ball. i did it because i am 15 and not many people can hit the leggie, but my faster ball gets a lot of wickets. Is it worth developing my faster ball and working on it or should i continue to work on my leggie and forget about the faster ball??

Good on ya Scooter welcome to the secret sect of Leg Spinning and lets hope you stick at it and get a heap of wickets for the rest of the season.

I think we're all going to say pretty much the same thing, which is you're going to have to sell your soul to developing your Leg Break and try and wean yourself off the straight ball or maybe just have it as your variation in the short term. You're going to have to work on your leg break and make that your main ball that you bowl 95% of the time. Learn to spin the ball hard and get it to turn off the wicket well and be able to bowl a good line and length. If you get all that together and you can disguise the straight one as a leg break come out of the hand - yeah you should get shed loads of wickets! Let us know how you get on.

My kid throws in a faster effort ball after slowly looping a few beforehand. You have to pick the right time to use it.

If you stray short down legside they will all hit you. Pitch it up on off stump and try and get them to drive.

if you even disguise it slightly and bowl it after a series of leg breaks then it can be a very effective weapon, afridi bowls one thzt is much quicker and its one of his best balls.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Two)

Last week we went on a recy mission to check out where we would be bowling, we found the ground but the wrong pitch. It might be a coincidence but my boys figures of 6/100 off 25 overs , almost half the runs and no wickets came from 6 overs bowled on unfamiliar pitches. That wont be a problem this week , he has been playing and practising on this one for 5 years.

A couple of the dads want to get together this arvo with their kids and have a long session in the middle. We are up for that. I had not batted against my son for a couple of weeks and a couple of days ago i did and he is a fraction short and legside, so we have been working on that. His flipper is coming out good and he is busting to try it in a game.

I cant wait for Pakistan to get here. I was watching danish Kaneria(?) on tv and wow his wrongun is a beauty. So much drift away from the righthander but it did not help the kiwi batsmen pick it. His action must make it hard to pick as well.

Steve Smith will be bowling here in a cuople of weeks as well. He seems to be one of these guys like mcgill that bowls one bad ball an over but often picks up a wicket with his long hop or full bunger. If he has a bad day with the ball he usually more than makes up with the bat. Big wraps on this kid. I will try and get some film of him in the nets with my crappy camera like dave suggested.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Two)

Thanks for the advice guys, i am sure that i can be an accomplished leggie, i have improved heaps in my time already. picked up 3 on the wkend, one was a turning flighted ripper that he tried to get out of the way of but came of the gloves and got caught at slip. Another one was from a full toss, and one from an attempted sweep that got caught at short mid wicket. The faster ball is not very well hidden, but i have been told that it comes out much faster then expected.

I was just wondering wat a good field would be to pick up the most wickets, taking into account my league and such. On the wkend i had 2 short midwickets, a deep backward square, mid on, mid off, gully, fine leg, leg gully, 1st slip. I was tryin to encourage the drive, and also the over the top slog. Is this a good idea, because it did seem a bit stupid to have 2 short midwickets, but i got 2 catches there. thanks in advance

Field placing depends a lot on what line you bowl. Mostly my son bowls with 5 on the off and 4 on the on and tries to bowl offstump line. You have a pretty stacked onside field. Slip is usually essential. Short leg comes into as you progress as a legspinner. If you have wrongun and use it a bit that can determine your field placement too.
That ball you bowled that got the catch off the gloves sounds good.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Two)

We had a good long training session today where my son bowled to a pretty good 30 year old club cricketer and had the poor bloke in a fair bit of trouble. I was keeping and I caught him twice and stumped him as well!
If he can bowl the same line tomorrow he should go good. As long as he doesn't stray down leg. We played on the pitch for tomorrows game , which is just concrete with no matting. Great bounce he was getting.
We found a turf wicket to practise on near our place. It will be interesting to see how he goes on that.

That'll be good Macca if you could - I've never seen this bloke and would love to see him in action.

What balls do you use on raw concrete pitches? How did you fair against your son, did he cause you any problems?

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Two)

hey guys just wanted to update you on my progress this morning. I bowled terribly, but somehow picked up 4 wickets! :0 i am starting to learn that you dont need to bowl well to get a lot of wickets as a leg spinner.

this first two were flippers that bowled them, one trying to pull and one trying to cut. the second were to tailenders, which one was caught at mid on and the other bowled by a faster one. i bowled an off stump line, and i bowled a lot flatter then i did last week. just thought i would update.

They use a smaller (420) gram. at U/13 they go up to full size ball. The concrete wrecks them quick smart.

Great stuff scooter.

Re: Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Two)

My boy bowled 2 overs 0/5. The other kid we trained with yesterday got 4 wickets. His dad will be ecstatic. I like to think some of my simple advise helped.

They won today and still have a chance at the semis. My kid put on a good partnership that steadied the ship when it looked like they wouldn't bat out the overs.

He causes me problems if i try and attack him, like he did to the bloke yesterday, but i can read him like a book after watching him bowl to me so much.
