All we have now is a group chest thumping about their own clubs facilities and how great it is that THEIR club has them..... Look beyond the crap and give me a response to the BETTERMENT of first grade cricket in ballarat. Its very apparent that grounds such as east high are unsuitable for first grade cricket.... What are the other options to ensure the highest standard of cricket in the town is represented as such by being played at the best possible locations....

Steggles,

There are currently a number of Ballarat's better grounds that are not satisfactory for cricket of any type let alone 1st XI cricket, however due to the drought there is not much that can be done. We are in fact fortunate to still have turf cricket being played, without the installation of tanks and carting water you guys would all be playing on hard wickets in Ballarat, with the exception being Naps which I think uses bore water.

At the moment the Eastern is probably the only turf ground in town that has full grass cover, and it is very poor condition compared to previous years. The City, Western, Wendouree etc. outfields are dreadful and bordering on being sand pits or dust bowls. This cannot be avoided, unless you know how to make it rain? All Ballarat turf wicket grounds under normal or should I say historical rain falls are not an issue and are well and truly suited to 1st XI cricket.

When or if the drought ever breaks the grounds will return to being of the standard that everyone expects. However until then I would suggest that you need to remember that we are in the middle of a 10 year drought. The answer to the dilemma is either pray for rain - if you are that way inclined, or to develop a plan to improve all grounds surfaces. By using such means as planting drought resistant grass, getting water tanks and using recycled water. All this requires serious dosh, so start filling in grant applications now. A quick reshuffle of who plays where will not solve the issue.

In my humble opinion the standard of cricket will not suffer due to the condition of the surfaces that are played on. If that in fact was the case then no cricketer of note would ever appear out of the Subcontinent where they grow up playing in dustbowls on substandard surfaces, and yes you could argue no cricketer of note has ever come out of the subcontinent...

My two bobs worth.

At las someone with some common sense. Couldnt agree more!!!

Steggles - Get over what you ground you play on and just play the great game of cricket. If you want to play on nice grounds play premier league cricket and even some of those are in ordinary shape. Or go to england where it rains every 3rd day.

To many sooks on this forum.

Don't worry about East High, try the beach / dust bowl / Sahara Desert / Australia outback infield AND outfield at Wendouree. It hasn't rained since the war!!! Lets be thankful we get to play on turf each week as some other comps don't. I rather play in dirt every week than play on hard wickets. Couldn't care where i play as long as their is a strip of turf

i'm all for the improvement of A grade cricket in Ballarat cobber but don't think that means I'm gonna just give a free leg up to opposition clubs. After all the time, money, effort, money, labour, money, work and money Naps has put in over the last 10 years out there on our facilities I'd have our u/16's play there before two opposition clubs play there. I think you're an East man so I look forward to having this conversation with you again in a few years time when all the works are completed at Russel Square and after all the time and energy and money you've pumped into it you'll be hapy to just step aside and let non East Ballarat sides play there rather then allow your
2nds players to gain invaluable experience on turf.

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

In the last year or two a massive water tank has been installed out here at Mount Clear College to water the ground. A great deal of underground irrigation and drainage has been installed too.

Wouldn't it be a sensible and obvious decision if Mount Clear could work with the school and the council to get the main ground out here (I work at the school) top dressed, sown, watered and the carpet deck ripped up and a wicket table put down a la Napoleons.

They would then have as good or better facilities than any other club. Two grounds with their social and change rooms in the middle, nets and water.

The school kids would still need to use the ground for a kick of the footy but they also would have the second ground to use at recess and lunch and in PE.

Hang on.....what the hell am I doing solving Mount Clear's dogs-balls obvious problems with dogs-balls obvious solutions?

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

Congratulations to the Country Week boys for making it into the final today (despite what Win TV said last night).

Last heard our boys were batting against Geelong and we were 1/105 after 25 overs.

Should be looking at 250+ and then a big chance to win it with Pete Moore and Brendan Thompson bowling well over the last few days

yeah scores originally posted on the net without 2nd innings results had Bendigo in 2nd and Ballarat 3rd

Thommo didn't play all week so you'd think moore will be more rooted but it all depends who pulls up better after tonights celebrations/commisserations that could be the key.

Don Jacobsson tells me that Geelong are 4 - 128 after 28 overs. Ballarat not batting.

SteveO is right, the message i got from the ground didn't say who was batting, i just assumed it was us.

last update 7 for 159 off 45, very similar to yesterday

Ballarat were in big ********e as he opening bowlers went for plenty and Geelong were 0 for 100. Knowles and irv then put the skids on and Geelong lost 4 or 5 for 50. Decent track at the albert but obviously a wicket they have recycled.

Should get the runs with pyke and miller due for some. Runs on the board though.

If the boys win i would say all players would be rat ********e for tomorrow.

1 for 134 off 24 overs.

Victory, the boys have won it for the first time in 26 years.

passed the required 197 with 2 down and 14 overs to remain.

Fantastic effort

Pete Moore apparently bowled 5 overs but left the field with a knee problem,
might be interesting if he can't get up for tomorrow

Re: Ballarat Cricket Association

I see in the courier today wendouree made a fairly sizable score against the darley lions. 5-340 with skinner getting 93 and pyke 119, looks as those two have hit some form of late and running into the finals. Maybe the target heads may be starting to tune up just at the right time of the year...any thoughts????
