South Africa in Australia

Re: South Africa in Australia

Dont know enough about A Mac to comment Jolldo, sorry.

Everyones seems to want a Andy Flintoff in the side.

If we havent got a decent AR then dont try and make one up on the spot.

But in the end Im just a keyboard warrior who enjoys his cricket. :p

Hasn't he been injury plagued this season?

His last game was awful v SA, 0/108 off 29 overs and only 27 runs

Doesnt fill me with any confidence sorry @|

Hitting the nail on the head there.

Ever since Flintoff in the 2005 Ashes, CA has insisted on playing a "makeshift" all-rounder.

Up until that point IMO we we had it right with 6 batsmen, keeper and 4 bowlers. As long as a couple of the batsmen were able to roll their arm over you still can provide enough variety.

The problem being that without Warne/McGrath, 4 bowlers often will not be enough to bowl teams out, especially when one is dreadfully out of form (Lee) and one is a pie-chucker (Hauritz). I think the number 6 (Or 7 with Haddin at 6) needs to be a decent bowler. Recent form aside, if Noffke was fully fit he would be a walk-up starter for my Australian team

But the way Australia bat, playing shots etc means we need a solid number 6 who can bat to cover for the instances when the top order fail.

Maybe its time to pull the batsmen back in a little...

Re: South Africa in Australia

Hilfy was already in the squad? Pretty sure Symo is still in there as well.

Watson and Lee OUT
McDonald and Bollinger IN

Hilfenhaus was added to the squad of 12. What makes you say Symonds is still there?

Squad: Ricky Ponting (capt), Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich, Mike Hussey, Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Andrew McDonald, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Doug Bollinger, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus.

Re: South Africa in Australia

My bad I was going by the 13 man squad put forward earlier. Looks like Symo is out injured.

I'd prefer D.Hussey over McDonald.

Re: South Africa in Australia

Bits and pieces players do not typically do well in test cricket.

The key when picking an all-rounder is whether they would be selected in the team for their best trait alone. Eg: Flintoff would be picked as a bowler if he couldn't bat. Symonds would be picked as a batsmen if he couldn't bowl.

Would McDonald be picked as a specialist batsmen or bowler? I doubt it.

McDonald will prove himself, quality player.

I have full confidence in him.

McDonald and Phil Hughes should debut in Sydney. Gutsy move but the selectors need to make such decsions to move foward.

Re: South Africa in Australia

Bracken should have got a chance atleast this time , but again selectors have falied to select good players.

Re: South Africa in Australia

Not too many batsmen around who would get a game ahead of McDonald on form and they are all openers

Averaging 46 with the bat and 24 with the ball are pretty good numbers, then again cricket coverage is dominated by fox sports so no one ever hears about anyone outside of NSW

Actually there is no way Symonds would ever get picked in a test side on his batting alone

Completely disagree with you there!
