Australia in New Zealand

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Can we please stick to the cricket.

How valuable is Shane Watson as a 5th bowler for us?

Since his return after the Ashes he has taken 13 wickets @ 25 in 6 matchs.

Watson... you are a god.

Peter George added to the test squad as cover for Ryan Harris, who is struggling with side soreness.

Source: foxsports shield coverage.

Fair enough choice there.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

That settles the choice for the 3rd fast bowlers spot if there was still any doubt

Was wondering what they were talking about when comparing George and Cutting for NZ

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Haven't heard that much of him, but the little I have seen of him I haven't minded him, plus his records of late are pretty good.

Seems good to me.

You saying that Harris is going to play over McKay if fit?

Obviously not, this will make sure the selectors dont do something totally stupid like play Harris ahead of McKay, no way a player with 1 first class match in over 12 months could be trusted to get through a test after yet another injury setback

Of course on their first class records it would be no comparison, McKay would get the spot easily but the media like to push their favourites

I'd beg to differ. Harris has been up there for the last 2-3 years.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

His ODI record is quite good

As for Harris last 4 seasons

64, 27, 30, 50

All worse than McKays career average of 24 and over those 4 seasons
27, 23, 21, 24

Yeah, pick Harris

Re: Australia in New Zealand

I wouldn't pick Harris for Tests, but he has definitely been one of the best bowlers of the past few years. Put the figures into context and they are fine.

He was an almost pure all rounder not long ago remember. Only lately has he been fully concentrating on his bowling and that has lead him to being the most economical bowler in the country, always with plenty of wickets and when you watch him he really troubles the batsmen.

Context is everything.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Interesting take on the economy rate, last year they both took 33 wickets, similar amount of balls, McKay with the far better average and better economy rate as well

About the only thing Harris has going for him and why he has been playing more ODIs, is Australia dont see McKay as a new ball bowler, he does it often enough for Victoria but not every innings obviously as Victoria has a superb pace attack, yet they gave McKay the new ball last ODI and he knocked over McCullum cheaply, something the player he replaced never managed in 5 previous innings ;)

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Harris was the most economical in T20s and ODIs of all the top bowlers, as for the long format it is a hard thing to differentiate between because all fast bowlers should be going at about the same economy rate, it is only natural. I raise that because he is reknowned for being very, very tight in pressure situations, no matter the format. What is McKay reknowned for? Not making a name of himself?

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Taking wickets cheaply

Most people outside of QLD wouldnt even know who Ryan Harris was before the ODIs so wouldnt say he exactly makes a name of himself even though he has been around a long time

Re: Australia in New Zealand

Give it a break eddie, he has earnt his spot, McKay had his chance in Perth against the Windies and took 1 for 100.

I think McKay is a decent bowler, but Harris has been bowling very well, and McKay didn't really nail down that spot in Perth.

Re: Australia in New Zealand

It is quite funny, people say Cameron White does not deserve a test spot as ODI records shouldnt count, yet here is Ryan Harris with 1 Shield game in 12 months and an average fc record being picked entirely on his ODI performances against Pakistan and the Windies, hilarious

Australia better hope he doesnt break down which is a very strong probability and then Shane Watson is forced to bowl 20 overs a day

As for McKays debut, Bollinger took 2/130 on his debut, didnt hurt his future test career
